Peachy Picks Pranna!
Whom You Know first covered Pranna after attending a soiree at the lovely spot:

but Peachy Deegan did not have a chance to explore the exquisite cuisine which is the most unique and creative she has seen thus far in Manhattan. "Pranna" means breath of life in Sanskrit, an old Indian language derived from Hindu.
The five-month-old restaurant is a resounding success due to the fabulous minds of the husband and wife team that brings you Pranna (they used to own two restaurants in Long Island) with the winning chefs Chai Trivedi and Gavin Portsmouth. From the first bite of the Seared Diver Scallops - with the Tamarind and Blood Orange Reduction, and served with Sauteed Honshimeji Mushrooms and Asparagus- from the Appetizer Menu, Pranna had Peachy at hello. This was our absolute favorite item from the entire night although no one item came close to disappointing us.
Payal Sharma's vision for a menu that boasts organic everything right down to the cocktail ingredients embraces the detail of a well-thought-out and finely executed business plan that Whom You Know commends across all business lines. Peachy Deegan started with the Saigon Seduction, composed of Appleton Estate V/X Rum, Solerno Blood Orange Liquor, strawberries and tarragon and Sparkling Rose while her dining companion had the Mae Khong, which is Mekhong Thai Rum with sugar cane syrup, fresh lime juice, and Fresh Sugar cane juice. Take our word for it, these drinks are outstanding! We tried others as well but do not want to give away all the cocktail secrets of Pranna-you need to go to find out for yourself!- but Peachy also recommends the PRANNA SUTRA...another successful concoction of Payal.
Off of the small bites menu, we ordered the Thai Butter Poached Lobster Slider with Pickled Asian Pear (Peachy's Pick!) and the Crispy Five Mushroom Stuffed Tofu with Sweet Tomatillo Chutney (Dining companion's Pick! Since when does Peachy eat Tofu?) and for the Entree we selected the Steamed Atlantic Halibut served with Crayfish Salad and infused with Lemongrass Infused Lobster Broth. Simply outstanding.
What Pranna could be most famous for is their Satay menu which is absolutely perfect both in taste and presentation-we loved the smart glass dish with the dipping sauces sectioned off! The Garam Masala Yogurt Swordfish and the Citrus Chili Marinated Tempeh were fabulously paired with the four sauces: Salty Kaffir Lime Mint, Spicy Peanut, Sour Mandarin Galangal (Peachy's favorite of the four) and Sweet Lemongrass Caramel.
The atmostphere is beautiful and Whom You Know especially liked the chandeliers, the wall that absorbs sound well and the table decor which was classy and modern. The spacious tables give you a feeling of relaxation in this cramped city and is just one more aspect of Pranna's great experience. The service was top-notch and David Stein, Service Director, pays attention to detail just as much as everyone we encountered in our Pranna experience.
If you have not yet had a Pranna experience, head straight for 79 Madison Avenue at 28th street! It has earned Peachy's FIRST pick for a reason. Call Pranna: 212 696 5700
