The world’s first variable angle uplight acclaimed for its sleek modernist design and innovative functionality

Designer Jake Dyson announces the U.S. launch of Motorlight Floor and Motorlight Wall during the International Contemporary Furniture Fair 2009 in New York. Motorlight is the world’s first variable angle uplight, enabling both designers and consumers to vary light angles to suit different environments and needs – from ambient lighting to spot lighting. Jake Dyson showed it to Peachy Deegan at the Conran Shop here in Manhattan and she loved all of the innovative features!

Since its inception in 2004, Jake Dyson Limited, lead by Jake Dyson with a team of designers, has been perfecting the intricate mechanics and sculptural form of Motorlight. Both Motorlight Floor and Motorlight Wall can be set to a precise angle of light or can be activated to cycle through continually adjusting angles to enhance the mood of an environment. This variable of light offers you the option to experiment and achieve the exact angle of light for a given situation. The effect of continually cycling the angle of light can be likened to “active” mood lighting.

“My intention was to design and produce a versatile uplighter that was visually striking and innovative in its functionality,” said Jake Dyson. “The secret is in its dynamic beam, which allows the user to experiment in altering the angle of light, providing mesmerizing patterns that spread across the room”.

Motorlight Floor is manually operated with a motor pause option allowing the angle of the light source to be fixed or dimmed. Motorlight Wall, the second iteration to the Motorlight collection, is the first remote-controlled, variable angle, wall-mounted light. Both variations of Motorlight allows the owner the flexibility to choose a beam of between 10 and 120 degrees, providing the light of a narrow shaft or wide beam, depending on your illumination purpose or mood. The motorized shutter smoothly opens between minimum and maximum angle on a 45 second cycle. Imagine a room that appears to breathe or the effect of gentle waves, rolling across the wall when multiple lights work in synchronization. Motorlight Wall provides the owner with a spotlight, floodlight and mood light all in one. It is fully programmable via the remote control allowing you to play – pause, dim – brighten – to create different light effects. Compact and easy to install, Motorlight Wall looks great on its own but also in multiples to create a sculptural light display and one remote control can operate up to 30 lights simultaneously, allowing you to control the shaft of light and brightness on each light, separately or together. The remote itself is a striking form and can operate at a maximum range of 328 feet (without obstruction).

About Jake Dyson Ltd.

In 2003 Jake Dyson established the Jake Dyson Studio in Crawford Passage, Clerkenwell, recruited two design engineers and over the next two years focused on developing the world’s first variable angle uplight and introduced Motorlight Floor in the U.K. In September 2008 he launched Motorlight Wall, which offers additional functionality and versatility in creating mood lighting for residential or commercial environments. Derived from Jake Dyson’s belief that function and form go hand in hand, Motorlight is a striking modernist design that would work well in many styles of interiors - whether minimal, clean and futuristic or retro chic. Even when it is not illuminated, the sleek lines, strong colors and tactile materials create an eye-catching sculptural form. A third addition to the Motorlight family is currently in development.

Motorlight Floor retails for $895 and is available in five different colors – Red Glow, Blue Glow, Black Gloss, White Gloss and Clear Glow.
