WHEN WINTER WEATHER STRIKES, POWER-UP TO STAY SAFE Keep these fun facts from Lowe’s in mind and be prepared for winter’s worst storms-Our 1st Coverage

Ugh, Peachy Deegan hate hate HATES being cold, the cold and most parts of winter, except hockey of course. In fact, we are tempted to just put this in the "Take a Trip to Florida" column as that is what thinking about the cold makes us want to do. One great thing about living in Manhattan is that Peachy doesn't shovel snow herself. But we all must deal with it, whether we are the ones shoveling it, digging out the car, or otherwise.

We are therefore kicking off our first coverage of Lowes! We totally believe in being prepared for everything in life, as much as we can anyway...

Don’t wait for kids to start sledding or building a family of snowmen before thinking about a snow blower; it may be too late. By 2008’s first snow fall, many consumers were stuck shoveling during winter’s worst storms. Be the early-bird this year and take your pick of snow blowers to keep your driveway clear and your family safe, while saving time and money this winter.

Save the workout for the gym and let a snow blower do the heavy lifting. Heavy snow can weigh up to 20 pounds or more, and even light, fluffy snow weighs seven pounds per shovel. Let the four-way chute control of the Troy-Bilt Storm Tracker 2690XP (Item #139978, $1,099, top photo) take the hard work out of clearing heavy snow in driveways up to 80 feet long. Experts estimate that heavy snow shoveling burns 14 to 20 calories per minute, which is approximately the same amount you would burn cross-country skiing or running.

Shoveling snow also puts unnecessary strain on muscles, backs and even the heart. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates more than 70,000 emergency room visits every year are related to snow shoveling. With a slim 12.5 pound design, adjustable handle to accommodate different sized users and a back-saving curve, the Snow Joe Plus (Item #189499, $99, middle photo) is a great winter tool for individuals of all ages and sizes and is ideal for small spaces such as sidewalks and staircases.

Many of Lowe’s snow blowers provide a new twist on reliable features that will improve snow blower function and add comfort. The Troy-Bilt line of snow blowers (Item #139966, $899; 139971, $1,099 and 139978, $1,099, bottom photo) offers two-way or four-way chute control to avoid stopping, bending and cranking to change the direction of the snow you’re throwing, helping the job get done faster with less effort. Troy-Bilt snow throwers even provide heated handgrips to keep away the frost bite, and the products’ additional safety features, such as light kits and reflectors, improve your visibility to cars driving past your home.

Don’t forget to pick-up replacement sheer pins in case one breaks mid-storm. Most two-stage snow blowers are equipped with sheer pins or bolts that are designed to break away should the auger strike a hard object such as a frozen newspaper in the driveway. These accessories are an inexpensive purchase to have readily available at your home and a less costly alternative to replacing the entire unit.
