Peachy Picks Pranna!

Whom You Know first covered Pranna after attending a soiree at the lovely spot:

http://www.whomyouknow.com/2009/04/tasty-tidbits-pranna.html

but Peachy Deegan did not have a chance to explore the exquisite cuisine which is the most unique and creative she has seen thus far in Manhattan. "Pranna" means breath of life in Sanskrit, an old Indian language derived from Hindu.

The five-month-old restaurant is a resounding success due to the fabulous minds of the husband and wife team that brings you Pranna (they used to own two restaurants in Long Island) with the winning chefs Chai Trivedi and Gavin Portsmouth. From the first bite of the Seared Diver Scallops - with the Tamarind and Blood Orange Reduction, and served with Sauteed Honshimeji Mushrooms and Asparagus- from the Appetizer Menu, Pranna had Peachy at hello. This was our absolute favorite item from the entire night although no one item came close to disappointing us.

Payal Sharma's vision for a menu that boasts organic everything right down to the cocktail ingredients embraces the detail of a well-thought-out and finely executed business plan that Whom You Know commends across all business lines. Peachy Deegan started with the Saigon Seduction, composed of Appleton Estate V/X Rum, Solerno Blood Orange Liquor, strawberries and tarragon and Sparkling Rose while her dining companion had the Mae Khong, which is Mekhong Thai Rum with sugar cane syrup, fresh lime juice, and Fresh Sugar cane juice. Take our word for it, these drinks are outstanding! We tried others as well but do not want to give away all the cocktail secrets of Pranna-you need to go to find out for yourself!- but Peachy also recommends the PRANNA SUTRA...another successful concoction of Payal.

Off of the small bites menu, we ordered the Thai Butter Poached Lobster Slider with Pickled Asian Pear (Peachy's Pick!) and the Crispy Five Mushroom Stuffed Tofu with Sweet Tomatillo Chutney (Dining companion's Pick! Since when does Peachy eat Tofu?) and for the Entree we selected the Steamed Atlantic Halibut served with Crayfish Salad and infused with Lemongrass Infused Lobster Broth. Simply outstanding.

What Pranna could be most famous for is their Satay menu which is absolutely perfect both in taste and presentation-we loved the smart glass dish with the dipping sauces sectioned off! The Garam Masala Yogurt Swordfish and the Citrus Chili Marinated Tempeh were fabulously paired with the four sauces: Salty Kaffir Lime Mint, Spicy Peanut, Sour Mandarin Galangal (Peachy's favorite of the four) and Sweet Lemongrass Caramel.

The atmostphere is beautiful and Whom You Know especially liked the chandeliers, the wall that absorbs sound well and the table decor which was classy and modern. The spacious tables give you a feeling of relaxation in this cramped city and is just one more aspect of Pranna's great experience. The service was top-notch and David Stein, Service Director, pays attention to detail just as much as everyone we encountered in our Pranna experience.

If you have not yet had a Pranna experience, head straight for 79 Madison Avenue at 28th street! It has earned Peachy's FIRST pick for a reason. Call Pranna: 212 696 5700

TASTY TIDBITS: Atlantic Grill

What could be more fabulous than fish on the Upper East side? Peachy Deegan cannot imagine anything better! When she is not writing articles for Whom You Know (what! she isn't ALWAYS writing? No: of course she is out in search of the latest, greatest thing to tell you about!) Peachy spends her time dreaming about crab legs, lobster, shrimp, and all the lovely items you can find at Atlantic Grill.

Ride the tide to Atlantic Grill, the Upper East Side neighborhood favorite! Voted one of the 50 most popular restaurants in New York in the 2008 Zagat (with a top raw bar), Atlantic Grill is the place to go for your seafood and sushi fix.

The bright, 200-seat space complete with bistro chairs, framed photos, baby blue walls and skylight might make you feel like you sailed into Cape Cod but Peachy feels like it's home in Florida. You may not have left New York's harbor, but one thing is sure: their seafood is just as fresh.

Choose from among crowd-pleasing favorites from the Atlantic - or the Pacific - like the Maryland Crab Cake with Chipotle Remoulade, or the Popular Nori Wrapped Big Eye Tuna with Stir Fry Bok Choy Sticky Rice, and Wasabi Soy Vinaigrette.

Additionally, the menu of classic desserts will leave you with an increased gym obligation, happily!, including the Molten Chocolate Cake and Chef's Creme Brulee.

Looking for lighter fare in the earlier hours? Then try the $24.07 prix-fixe lunch or stop by on Sunday for brunch specials like the popular Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict or the blueberry, banana or chocolate chip pancakes.

Whom You Know recommends a visit to one of Peachy Deegan's favorites!

BIG APPLE BUSINESS: John Allan

Only a handful of true originals command the defining title of “pioneer.” It’s reserved for the most accomplished, and most significant people in a single industry that has experienced change. Clearly standing out as the pioneer of the men’s grooming industry is John Allan who started with a bold mission in 1988 – to change the landscape of men's grooming and style one client at a time – one city at a time. Now twenty years later, John Allan has not only redefined the landscape, he has set a new standard – creating renowned destinations that combine the atmosphere of a private club with a full grooming outpost for men. With multiple locations throughout New York and most recently Chicago, an award-winning product line, and plans for global expansion, his unique vision and determination have paved the way for the industry, and made John Allan’s a standard among professional men. Whom You Know is pleased to kick off our coverage of John Allan to give our male readers some equal time, catching up with all of Peachy Deegan's tips for women!

HAIR CARE
Staying true to his philosophy of making men the focus and not an afterthought, John Allan teamed up with several chemists across the United States to help design formulas based on vitamins, botanicals, and marine plant extracts. Through extensive research and development John Allan developed a hair care line specifically for men that addressed the issues of performance, packaging and even scent. Over the next 2 years, he was able to turn to the best testing lab he could find - his thousands of New York City clients. Feedback from both clients and stylists was used to direct, refine, and perfect each formulation leading to the national launch in 2003. Today, John Allan’s hair care products have become one of the top lines available in the industry.

SHAVE & SKIN CARE
After developing his hair care line, John Allan created an advanced line of skin care and shaving products that men really needed and wanted while incorporating key active ingredients including an essential foundation of vitamins, botanicals and natural emollients with the latest scientific advancements in skin care. The line not only provides men with healthy and balanced skin, it gives them a shaving process and skin care regimen that they can commit to and trust.

The Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Greater California: Supported by Our Mover and Shaker Consuelo Costin

Although Whom You Know focuses on Manhattan, we do realize that we are linked to the rest of the world, and many Manhattanites interpret that as that "the rest of the world is linked to us." (Peachy Deegan just lives here, she's not FROM here...we don't think we have that kind of attitude at Whom You Know.)

To that end and additionally to re-emphasize our belief that our Movers and Shakers are the absolute best of the best, today we are covering The Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Greater California. Consuelo Costin is a strong supporter of this and has dedicated her work through The Legacy Group to them. See Consuelo Costin as our Mover and Shaker:

http://www.whomyouknow.com/2009/04/movers-and-shakers-consuelo-vanderbilt.html

Ovarian Cancer affects one in every 55 women. That is why the Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Greater California is committed to raising awareness of ovarian cancer and its symptoms - symptoms so vague they're difficult to detect. Their goal is to educate the general public as well as the medical community of the signs and symptoms of this disease, and to support research to help find an early detection method and a successful treatment.

The Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Greater California is made up of non-paid Board members and volunteers. They sponsor health fairs, lectures, and newspaper, radio and television broadcasts to increase public awareness about ovarian cancer. The annual run/walk raises funds for research, education, and the promotion of early detection and prevention of ovarian cancer.

BIG APPLE BUSINESS: PAUL KOHN DESIGN

PAUL KOHN DESIGN is the culmination of a twenty-year journey for two passionate collaborators, Elaine Paul and Barbara Shaltuck Kohn. Opened in 2007, the Tribeca home design studio and boutique boasts an extraordinary collection of hand-crafted and artisan pieces, as well as antiques and collectibles from around the world. As an ongoing expression of these two design visionaries, the company's mission is to inspire, to help nurture individual style, and to invigorate the personal spaces that make up the home. Whom You Know is all about style and invigoration! Express yourself in your personal space says Peachy Deegan.

Award-winning designers Barbara Kohn and Elaine Paul have been friends and collaborators for over two decades. Both women enjoyed professional success in other fields before embracing their great passion for home design. Ms. Paul left a career as a respected trial attorney and judge to join her husband's Arizona-based manufacturing and design company, launching its interior design practice. Ms Kohn, a former investment banker, sought Ms. Paul's expertise on a residential design and quickly recognized a kindred spirit in style and sensibility. Their first collaboration earned a regional design award and was featured in several magazines and a book. Since then, their collective work has appeared in Metropolitan Home, Elle Decor, The New York Times, New York Spaces, The Home Office Book, House Beautiful, Phoenix Home & Garden and This Old House magazine. And NOW we present it to you here at Whom You Know!

BOUTIQUE
The store occupies a landmark building on Tribeca's picturesque Duane Park. In the spirit of a contemporary Idea House, the partners created a retail environment that would evoke the rich, layered aesthetic of a life well lived. The boutique is divided into rooms, each curated with a mix of new and old, modern and vintage pieces. As Elaine Paul explains, "We wanted people to feel like they were visiting a friend who just happens to have really great things." Elaine's daughter Amanda Paul oversees the New York studio and boutique, bringing her own practiced eye for design while cultivating a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Paul Kohn Design is proud to offer many of its fine furniture and home accessories exclusively to the New York market. Among these:

MESQUITE COLLECTION - Mesquite is a uniquely dense wood, native to the southwest, with beautiful grain and exceptional depth of rich, warm color. PAUL KOHN DESIGN offers an exclusive private collection of tables, chairs and casegoods, each hand-crafted by a single artisan.

UPHOLSTERED COLLECTION - PAUL KOHN's signature collection of sofas, chairs and daybeds interpret classic silhouettes with an eye for stylish comfort. Each piece is constructed by one person from start to finish and crafted with luxe details like hand-tied springs and down cushions.

MATTHEW SOLOMON - The acclaimed ceramic artist offers signature pieces including his "Grand Tulip" bowl. In an exclusive arrangement with PAUL KOHN DESIGN, Solomon invites customers to select the color for an original, signed piece.

PAUL KOHN DESIGN is located at 50 Hudson Street in Manhattan. Designers Elaine Paul and Barbara Kohn are available by appointment at (212) 977-5050.

PRODUCT ALERT: Clarins Super Restorative Wake-Up Lotion

Special Preview to Whom You Know readers by Clarins: to be released to the public in July 2009!

Whom You Know calls this Coffee for your Eyes- but to the rest of the world it will be called: Super Restorative Wake-Up Lotion by Clarins. It re-energizes, smooths and revitalizes mature skin...wait, we prefer the word EXPERIENCED. It will make you look and feel refreshed.

The Clarins Super Restorative Wake-Up Lotion is a new skin care product to complement the Super Restorative Collection, that immediately revitalizes skin and smoothes away sleep marks, fine lines and puffiness. With age (not that any of us at Whom You Know or reading Whom You Know are OLD!), skin becomes thinner, cellular renewal slows down and blood and lymphatic systems decelerate causing the body to take longer to “wake-up”. Skin also loses tone and suppleness. As a result, it holds marks and appears creased in the morning. Jump start your skin with Super Restorative Wake-Up Lotion for re-energized and smoothed skin. Skin is refreshed and lines and sheet marks are diminished.

What we like about this at Whom You Know:
* Instantly wakes-up tired skin and counteracts signs of facial fatigue
* Minimizes puffiness and the appearance of fine lines
* Reduces dark spots and shadows
* Evens skin tone with a “double-smoothing” effect from Oat Sugars
* Firms, tightens and smoothes skin
* Revives skin’s radiance
* Light refreshing formula
* Dermatologist tested. Non-comedogenic

Key Ingredients
* Pueraria Lobata boosts cellular activity, increases collagen production and soothes the skin’s surface
* Green coffee extract, rich in caffeine, reactivates cells and energizes skin
* Ginseng root strengthens the energizing action of caffeine and helps boost skin tone
* Oat Sugars, extracted from the plant's seeds, work as a natural skin-tightening agent, and help smooth appearance of imperfections on skin's surface
* Hibiscus extract eliminates excess dry skin cells off the skin’s surface while, hydrating, brightening and comforting skin
* Butcher’s Broom (Ruscus) helps stimulate microcirculation to reduce puffiness and eliminate toxins

Application
Apply in the morning to perfectly cleansed face and neck using light tapping movements or with a cotton pad dampened in lotion. Follow with Super Restorative Day Cream SPF 20.
Retail Price: $40

Clarins Super Restorative Wake-Up Lotion is available at department stores and fine specialty stores nationwide beginning July 2009.

Peachy Deegan's favorite Clarins counter is at Saks with Ofelia Lieberman!!!

Preview: Rarely Seen Medieval Drawings on View in New Exhibition at Metropolitan Museum

Rarely Seen Medieval Drawings on View invNew Exhibition at Metropolitan Museum

Exhibition Dates: June 2–August 23, 2009
Exhibition Location: Galleries for Drawings, Prints, and Photographs
With strokes of genius, artists in the Middle Ages explored the medium of drawing, creating a rich panoply of works ranging from spontaneous sketches to powerful evocations of spirituality and intriguing images of science and the natural world. Opening June 2 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Pen and Parchment: Drawing in the Middle Ages will be the first museum exhibition to examine in depth the achievements of the medieval draftsman. Through some 50 examples created in settings as diverse as a ninth-century monastery and the 14th-century French court, the presentation will consider the aesthetics, uses, and techniques of medieval drawings, mastered by artists working centuries before the dawn of the Renaissance. Works from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum will be displayed along with important loans from American and European museums, and the great national, university, and monastic libraries of Europe. Many of these manuscripts are so highly prized that they have never before been lent outside of their home country.

The exhibition is made possible by the Michel David-Weill Fund.

Additional support is provided by Mrs. Alexandre P. Rosenberg.

The exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

Exhibition Overview

Arranged both thematically and chronologically, the exhibition will open with a selection of early drawings from the ninth and early 10th centuries. These works will demonstrate the keen intellect and creativity of the artists, whose mastery of the pen can be seen in the diversity of the illustrations’ style and subject matter. The earliest manuscript in the exhibition—the Corbie Psalter (around 800; Bibliothèque d’Amiens Métropole, Amiens)—features wonderfully inventive initials decorated with drawings of men and animals and was executed by an anonymous master, who was perhaps the first great medieval draftsman. Artists at the Abbey of Saint Gall in Switzerland, an early center of medieval learning that to this day retains much of its library, illustrated a wide array of texts with vibrant sketches, including the Epistles of Saint Paul (late ninth century; Stiftsbibliothek, Saint Gall) and a compilation of texts devoted to warfare (ca. 850–925; University Library, Leiden).

In the 10th and 11th centuries, artists in England embraced the medium of drawing as never before. The 150 psalms attributed to the biblical King David were favored texts that inspired artistic interpretations rich in poetic imagery. The best-known of these, the Harley Psalter (around 1010-30; The British Library, London)—a work that pulses with nervous, taut energy—is a masterpiece of Anglo-Saxon line drawing. Another artist’s literal interpretations of psalm texts in the Bury St. Edmunds Psalter (ca. 1025–50; Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana) resulted in inventive drawings of great charm.

Manuscripts from 11th- and 12th-century France are characterized by the creative use of drawings in combination with painting. A stunning example is the monumental Bible of Stephen Harding (1109–11; Bibliothèque municipale, Dijon), intended to be the most authoritative edition of the holy text in its day. Created in consultation with rabbis and Christian scholars at the Cistercian abbey of Cîteaux in Burgundy, where Harding was abbot, the manuscript features tinted drawings, the delicate lines of which cleverly play off painted elements on the page to dramatic effect.

An impressive selection of secular works offers a surprising counterpoint to medieval religious texts. Medieval libraries preserved the heritage of the classical world, as witnessed in an exceptional manuscript of the Aratea, an ancient astronomical Greek poem translated into Latin by the Roman orator Cicero (about 1000; British Library, London). This manuscript, featuring drawn figurations of the constellations, is one of the finest of its kind. It was drawn by one of the great artists of the Anglo-Saxon period, whose name remains unknown, but whose distinctive hand yielded a small group of masterpieces. Spanish royal legal documents sometimes included drawings. A charter issued by Alfonso VII, King of Castile and Leon (around 1150; The Hispanic Society of America) is illustrated with a lively drawing of the parties involved in the legal proceedings the text records.

Long before the Renaissance, medieval artists turned to drawing to illustrate scientific texts. An anthology of the natural sciences from the English monastery of Thorney (around 1110; St. John’s College, Oxford) includes dozens of instructive diagrams, maps, and charts. One of the earliest English world maps, the Sawley Imago mundi (around 1180–90; Corpus Christi College, Cambridge) appears as the frontispiece for a compendium designed for readers without access to large libraries. It brings together in a single image a wealth of accumulated geographical knowledge from the Bible, Greek legends, and ancient cosmographic texts. Of particular interest is a consanguinity diagram from an early encyclopedia produced near Regensburg, Germany (ca. 1150; Bayerische Staatsbibiothek, Munich). The illustration elucidates family relationships to the sixth degree, identifying individuals whom one may not marry, as well as those from whom one is entitled to inherit goods or property.

Sketchbooks, model books, and unfinished manuscripts betray the working methods of medieval artists. An ornate A, B, C, or D from a Tuscan book of decorated initials (ca. 1175; The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge) served as a model for artists embellishing the texts of other manuscripts. The underlying drawings of the Prato Haggadah (ca. 1300; The Jewish Theological Seminary) were intended to guide later painted decoration that would use a variety of pigments and gold. A rare early drawing of the façade of Strasbourg Cathedral (ca. 1260; Musée de l’Oeuvre Notre Dame, Strasbourg) bears witness to the increasing importance of architects and architectural plans in the age of the great cathedrals of Europe.

Several medieval draftsmen known for the individuality of their work will also be featured. Matthew Paris, the designated historian and a prolific artist at Saint Albans Abbey, was an astute observer of the world around him. He will be represented by one volume of the Chronica Majora, or Great Chronicle (around 1240–53; Corpus Christi Library, Cambridge), his most ambitious work, which contains year-by-year entries of significant historical events accompanied by an extensive and unprecedented set of marginal pictures. Bound up with this book is a magnificent tinted drawing that Matthew probably kept originally in a portfolio of his own drawings.

The eccentric drawings of the Italian Opicinus de Canistris, a cleric at the papal court in Avignon, depict the artist’s mystical revelations and convey an obsessive fascination with the ways his biography fits into the order of the universe (1335–56; Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana). Drawings of the passages of the stars and abstract cartographic designs replete with recognizable faces and figures form part of the almost hallucinatory visions of his fertile imagination.

The exhibition will conclude with two celebrated Gothic manuscripts that attest to the creative power of drawing as a medium in later periods. Painted figures float over a gossamer web of delicate penwork in an ornate initial in the Windmill Psalter produced in East Anglia (late 13th century; The Morgan Library & Museum). The quiet sophistication of the prayer book created for Jeanne d’Evreux, queen of France (about 1324–38; The Metropolitan Museum of Art), makes it a masterpiece of grisaille. The artist Jean Pucelle combines keen observation of daily life in the streets of Paris, humorous and fanciful caricatures, and tender religious imagery.

Exhibition Catalogue and Credits

The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue. Published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and distributed by Yale University Press, the book will be available in the Museum’s book shops ($50, paperback).

The catalogue is made possible in part by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Consuelo Costin, Singer, Actor, Writer and Participant in The Legacy Group and Sohomuse.com

CONSUELO COSTIN

Consuelo Costin is an eighth generation descendant of Cornelius Vanderbilt.

She is also an actress and singer who began her career in music at the age of 15 studying at La Studio Brittanica in Florence. Highlights from her career have included performing alongside Joe Cocker at the Royal Albert Hall and a soon-to-be released full-length album from her band Costin. As a songwriter and performer, her music has been featured on shows like the WB miniseries “Beach Girls” and in commercials for Pantene. She has also performed on MTV2 and regularly tours with Costin.

In addition to her artistic work as a singer and actress, Consuelo is launching a website called Sohomuse.com. The site will serve as a social network where users can facilitate the exchange of ideas and artwork.

Consuelo is the spokesperson for the Ovarian Cancer Coalition of Greater California and currently serves as the organization’s Vice President. She has selected the national Ovarian Cancer Research Fund as her designated charity for the Legacy Group. The highly respected organization founded in 1994 and subsequently led by the late Liz Tilberis, the beloved editor-in-chief of Harpers Bazaar. Since her death in 1999, the Fund has received major support from the fashion, beauty, and entertainment industries. We are pleased to present her as our latest Mover and Shaker!

Peachy Deegan interviewed Consuelo Costin for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: What aspects of Florence motivated you to pursue your career in the arts?
Consuelo Costin: Everything in Florence was a work of Art - the landscapes, the architecture, the fashion and the food. I was hooked in ten seconds flat. While I had been singing since I was eleven, it was in Florence where I started performing live in night clubs around the city.

Of all of your artistic pursuits, which do you enjoy the most and why?
It's tough to choose between Singing, Acting and Writing. They all enable me to express myself in different ways. If I had to pick one it would have to be acting, because it allows me to escape into the worlds of the different characters.

What would surprise people about being a Vanderbilt?
Probably that in spite of my heritage, I have worked every dead end job imaginable.... From Spraying bowling shoes to scrubbing toilets in the kinds of the places my ancestors were treated like royalty.

What inspired you to help start The Legacy Group?
I have been passionate about various different Ovarian Cancer related charity organizations ever since my mother was diagnosed with stage 3c Ovarian Cancer. The Legacy group is the perfect venture for me to continue my fight to find a cure.

What aspects of your personal style do you hope to incorporate into The Legacy Group products?
I have always taken very good care of my skin and consistently try to look my best, whether I am on the red carpet or at a Saturday afternoon barbecue. I am looking for affordable products that people can use or wear on a daily basis to make them feel good about themselves.

What other people do you think would be great to join The Legacy Group in the future?
I think beyond just recognizable names, anyone who is out there creating a legacy of giving back and helping to make the world a better place is a good candidate.

How is Sohomuse going?
We have only just launched our beta version. So far the response has been overwhelmingly positive. As the first 3D online social and business networking website for artists, I am very proud and very excited about the future of WWW.SOHOMUSE.COM

What is your favorite place to be in NYC?
CENTRAL PARK

What is your favorite shop?
Bergdorf Goodman

What is your favorite drink?
SeaBreeze

What is your favorite restaurant?
PALMA

What is your favorite NYC book?
Breakfast at Tiffany's

What is your favorite thing to do in NYC that you can do nowhere else?
Be my wild and quirky self

What do you think is most underrated and overrated here?
Underrated would be the people. They often get a bad wrap for being rude, but I'm addicted to their realness. Overrated is probably the pizza parlors. They all say "world famous", but I've never heard of most of them... And I love a good New York pizza.

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
My favorite food is a guacamole burger.

How would you like to be contacted by Whom You Know readers?

READ THIS: Car Girls by Jacqueline Hassink

Whom You Know generally recommends READING books in this column, but today we are going to take the fork in the road and take a deviation from the standard and we will recommend LOOKING at this fabulous work of art. Not only has it made our READ THIS, but it is also a great collectible gift for those that appreciate art, cars, and women. Only 1,500 were published.

In Car Girls, Jacqueline Hassink, over a five year long journey of NEW CAR SHOWS (we emphasize NEW as there are several outstanding antique car shows, collectible car shows, and car shows specific to a car type: i.e. Corvette shows)captures the art and marketing strategies between the hot new car and the woman selling the latest model.

When the model sells the latest model, Jacqueline is there with her lens across brands, across cultures and around the world. Although the vehicle, the make, and the setting may differ, the relationship between auto and eros is constant. Although the strategy is corporate, when a human begins interaction with the power of the vehicle the energy of the potential sale is observed by Hassink.

From Detroit to Paris to Tokyo, the Dutch-born Hassink, while photographing this silent interaction does indeed show why women through fashion, visual appeal and overall corporate strategic intelligence are successful in selling the latest cars.

Included in the work is an essay by Tim Dant and an interview with the artist. The book is produced by Aperture, dedicated to publishing the finest in creative photography for over fifty years.

READ THIS: Eccentric Glamour by Simon Doonan

Whom You Know just loves Simon Doonan's style and his take on style. Certainly you know that he is Creative Director at Barney's New York...

Simon was raised with style by a cool Irish mom and this experience is formative in all aspects of his creative outlook and disposition. It is his belief that all women are not created equal, or men for that matter, (but this book is about the females!) and each woman should celebrate her uniqueness and be what she is! Simon says play upon your quirks. Do not merely tread water and be a Stepford wife, be memorable instead.

In exploring this idea, Doonan will have you rolling off the couch in hysterics due to his power of description that is like no other and tales of eccentricity that will both inspire and freak you out.

Simon shuns those styles that make one look like they are employed in the red-light district and the cookie-cutter fashions that Whom You Know has seen pervade public schools by the "mean girls." What Peachy Deegan means here is that Simon is right-do as Simon says and BE YOURSELF. Who else could be so fabulous?

Additionally, Simon Doonan profiles several Eccentric Glamour women throughout the work and each of them shines a new light on style overall through their individual style.

This book is both inspiration to some, a revelation to others and above all, a MUST READ for Whom You Know readers!

Today Peachy's piggies are pooped. It is also time to get your feet in TIP TOP shape for the summer shoes and put away your winter blues.

WHAT WHOM YOU KNOW LIKES ABOUT THE FOOT BEAUTY TREATMENT CREAM:
It nourishes, smoothes, and renews tired feet on a daily basis, but is especially fabulous for those days that you have chased after cabs in vain and have acquired that new blister from the new spring shoes.
Feet take 8 to 10,000 steps a day and perspire three times more than anywhere else on the body. In addition, over 60% of women complain about their feet and keep them under wraps.
Clarins introduces Foot Beauty Treatment Cream taking skin care one-step further. This soothing foot beauty cream renews and softens dry skin and beautifies nails. Clarins plant-based formulation takes foot beauty care to the next level by targeting concerns of stress, excessive perspiration and early aging. Clarins Foot Beauty Treatment Cream rejuvenates, restores and pampers the natural beauty of your feet.
Recent scientific research has led to the discovery of two major factors contributing to the aging process of your feet. The formulation of Clarins Foot Beauty Treatment Cream takes into account:
* Foot skin is thick on the soles, yet as delicate as hand skin on the surface.
* Foot skin is drier and appears to age faster due to the absence of sebaceous glands.

Benefits
* Nourishes and hydrates skin
* Helps relieve feelings of fatigue and swelling
* Encourages hydration, helping to strengthen nails
* Reduces dampness on skin
* Dermatologist tested

Formulation
* Virgin Cashew Nut Oil restores suppleness and creates younger-looking skin
* Shea Butter rich in unsaponifiables from vegetable oil, help nourish, smooth, and repair the skin
* Arnica helps relieve feelings of fatigue and swelling
* Myrrh strengthens and beautifies nails by restoring their natural suppleness
* Essential Oil of Thyme purifies and cleanses skin
* Laponite® Powder (derived from silica) provides an antiperspirant action by absorbing and trapping water on the surface of the skin

Application:
Apply morning or evening using Clarins Foot Beauty Application Method. Begin by massaging foot arches. Then, gently draw a heart on the sole of the foot. Press down gently into the center of the heart with the middle knuckle of your index finger. This will help relax the foot and boost microcirculation throughout the body. For ultimate relaxation, finish by pressing down gently in circular movements using your thumb on each toe.

Retail Price: $25.00

Clarins Foot Beauty Treatment Cream is available at department stores and fine specialty stores nationwide beginning July 2009. Your piggies are precious-take care of them says Peachy Deegan!

Francis Bacon’s Provocative Works Featured in Major Retrospective Opening May 20 at Metropolitan Museum

Whom You Know just LOVES the Met! Here is an upcoming exhibition:

Francis Bacon’s Provocative Works Featured in Major Retrospective Opening May 20 at Metropolitan Museum

Exhibition Dates: May 20–August 16, 2009

Exhibition Location: Special Exhibition Galleries, 2nd floor

The first major New York exhibition in 20 years devoted to Francis Bacon (British, 1909–1992)—one of the most important painters of the 20th century—will be presented at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from May 20 through August 16, 2009. Marking the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth, Francis Bacon: A Centenary Retrospective will bring together the most significant works from each period of the artist’s remarkable career. Drawn from public and private collections around the world, this landmark exhibition will consist of some 65 paintings, complemented by never-before-seen works and archival material from the Francis Bacon Estate, which will shed new light on the artist’s career and working practices. The Metropolitan Museum is the sole U.S. venue of the exhibition tour.

The exhibition is made possible in part by The Daniel and Estrellita Brodsky Foundation.

The exhibition was organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and Tate Britain, London, in partnership with the Museo Nacional del Prado, Madrid.

It is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

“Bacon is more compelling than ever: despite the passage of time, his paintings remain fresh, urgent, and mysterious. Never before has this work been more relevant to young artists,” noted Gary Tinterow, Engelhard Chairman of the Metropolitan Museum’s Department of Nineteenth-Century, Modern, and Contemporary Art. “For these reasons, we are very pleased to be able to present a retrospective spanning his entire career to our viewing public.”

Entirely self-taught, Francis Bacon emerged in 1945 as a major force in British painting. He rose to prominence over the subsequent 45 years, securing his reputation as one of the seminal artists of his generation. With a predilection for shocking imagery, Bacon’s oeuvre was dominated by emotionally charged depictions of the human body that are among the most powerful images in the history of art.

The exhibition’s loosely chronological structure will trace critical themes in Bacon’s work and explore his philosophy about mankind and the modern condition with visually arresting examples. The earliest group of works, from the 1940s and ’50s, focuses on the animalistic qualities of man, including: paintings of heads with snarling mouths (Head I, 1947–1948, The Metropolitan Museum of Art); images of men as pathetic and alone (Study for a Portrait, 1953, Hamburger Kunsthalle, Germany); and the human figure portrayed as base and bestial (Figures in a Landscape, 1956, Birmingham Museums & Art Gallery, England). The exhibition also features numerous versions of Bacon’s iconic studies (1949–1953) after Diego Velázquez’s Portrait of Innocent X (1650). Mortality is addressed directly in his last works (Triptych, 1991, The Museum of Modern Art, New York).

In the 1960s, working in his classic style of much looser, colorful, and expressive painting, Bacon showed the human body exposed and violated as in, for example, Lying Figure, 1969 (Foundation Beyeler, Riehen/Basel, Switzerland). In the following decade he increasingly used narrative, autobiography, and myth to mediate ideas about violence and emotion, as in the 1971 painting In Memory of George Dyer (Foundation Beyeler) and Triptych Inspired by the Orestia of Aeschylus, 1981 (Astrup Fearnley Collection, Oslo, Norway).

A number of important works by Bacon will only be presented at the Metropolitan Museum, including Study for Portrait I, 1953 (Denise and Andrew Saul); Painting, 1946 (The Museum of Modern Art, New York); and Self Portrait, 1973 (private collection, courtesy Richard Nagy, London).

Central to an understanding of the artist’s working methods are the large caches of archival materials that have only become available since Bacon’s death, especially the contents of the artist’s famously cluttered London studio. A rich selection of 65 items from the studio, his estate, and other archives will be included in the exhibition. The objects include pages the artist tore from books and magazines, photographs, and sketches—all of which are source materials for the finished paintings on view in the exhibition.

The curators of Francis Bacon: A Centenary Retrospective are Gary Tinterow, Matthew Gale, Head of Displays, Tate Modern, and Chris Stephens, Head of Displays, Tate Britain. In conjunction with Francis Bacon, on Thursday, May 21 the Metropolitan Museum will present a symposium consisting of individual talks by the following international scholars: Nicholas Chare, Barbara Dawson, Martin Harrison, Richard Hornsey, Linda Nochlin, Alistair O’Neill, Annalyn Swan, and Mark Stevens. Gary Tinterow will moderate a panel discussion to conclude the event. This symposium is made possible by the John Edwards Charitable Foundation.

May 2 Bruce Silverstein Gallery

Leonard Freed: Black in White America

May 02, 2009 - June 13, 2009

Opening Reception: May 2nd, 6-8 pm

Bruce Silverstein Gallery

535 West 24th Street

New York, NY 10011

www.brucesilverstein.com

In 1962 Leonard Freed went to Berlin to shoot the wall being erected. There he saw an African American soldier standing in front of the wall and it struck him; that at home in the US, African Americans were struggling for civil rights, and here in Germany an African American soldier was ready to defend the USA.

This prompted a lengthy examination by Freed of the plight of the African Americans at home in the United States. Freed traveled to New York, Washington, D.C. and all throughout the South, capturing images of a segregated and racially-entrenched society. The photos taken at that time were then published in 1968 in "Black in White America".

"Black in White America" is a moving collection of photos and telling captions that document the African American struggle for self-definition in mid-20th century America. Freed's sensitive and informative black-and-white photographs, reproduced in gravure, of 1960s African American living throughout America investigates the politics of the country, and articulates the anxiety of an under-represented and discriminated people.

MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Devo Springsteen, Grammy Award-winning Producer/Songwriter/ Entrepreneur

Having recently begun his career as a musician, Grammy Award-winning Producer/Songwriter/ Entrepreneur, Devo Springsteen has already had an immediate impact on popular music. Starting out as a club DJ while attending the Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia, Devo quickly learned what kind of melodies and beats moved the crowd. In 2000, he made the move to New York City, where he began DJing for his then roommate, singer John Legend and collaborating with super-producer Kanye West. Recognizing talent, Devo subsequently signed Legend to West’s burgeoning record label, G.O.O.D. Music and produced and co-wrote three songs on Legend’s critically acclaimed debut album “Get Lifted.” Devo followed this up by producing Kanye West’s smash single and 2006 Best Rap Song Grammy-winning “Diamonds (from Sierra Leone)”. Since then, Devo has been busy behind the boards producing music for a diverse group of artists ranging from hip-hop icon Nas to music legend Ms. Aretha Franklin to international superstar Britney Spears to rap artists such as The Last Poets, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, and Common.

From working with the world’s top artists to keeping it hot in the clubs, people are peeping the technique. Commonly mentioned in Page Six and featured in 2007 Blender Magazine’s Hot List (Hot List #46), the magazine noted Devo’s rapid hip-hop ascension and signature sound. You can still find Devo in the clubs, manning the turntables at special events from Nairobi, Africa to New York City to Tokyo and all points in between. In keeping with his Wharton background, Devo’s also recently spearheaded two urban promotional campaigns with powerhouse brand Bacardi Flavors and continues to develop and offer innovative marketing tools through his multi-media company, Astor Place Media.

With his distinct versatility you’ve surely heard the fruit of Devo’s work. Remember his name because you’ll be hearing more of it in the near future! Whom You Know is pleased to present him as a Mover and Shaker.

Peachy Deegan interviewed Devo Springsteen for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: What is your first musical memory?
Devo Springsteen: Well I was in a bunch of choirs growing up so that’s some of the first memories. The first thing I really remember commercially is going to a Jaime Foxx half comedy/half music show in Kansas City. That was when he was first poppin’ in the early 1990’s.

How did you like being a DJ?
I’m still a DJ mainly for international events or charity stuff. I enjoy it and the places where it takes me...But I’m trying to listen to pop music or whatever less so it doesn’t influence what I’m making. So it makes it harder for me to keep up with all the new relevant music like that.

What did Wharton teach you that has been the most helpful in your music career?
There’s some negotiation stuff... Some branding concepts. Some ways of thinking that have helped me in reviewing contracts... Never leaving money on the table.. The main benefit has been the relationships though.

What have you learned most through career experience?
I learned the critical things that make a successful pop music artist. Hard work (I repeat hard work.. like for years), a unique perspective or voice, willingness to listen, social abilities... I learned that dealing with art and artists is a different ballgame than dealing with straight up business decisions/decision-makers who care about the bottom line. There’s a lot more emotional hand holding/ego-checking/kissing ass etc. I’m still learning how to make hit records. You gotta develop urgency and emotional connection in the songs.

What song(s) are you proudest of and why?
“Diamonds (from Sierra Leone)” was great. It’s always cool hearing a song you made in the club from the big speakers but I think “If You’re Out There’” the song I did last year with John Legend for Obama’s Presidential campaign will be the one I can look back on with the most pride and stunt-asticness!!

What was John Legend like as a roommate?
When we were in college John was the responsible roommate who collected everyone’s prorated utility bills and all. He never really partied with us and it just didn’t really cross your mind to invite him out like that because he always was focused on work or his singing group. But when we moved to NY he let loose a little and began to become John “Legend.”

How would he answer that question about you?
Hmmm...I was always kinda a party animal.. But I always got the work that needed to be done done and maintained my obligations too.. I was a pretty good roommate I think. I always provide a good time but if your parents/co-workers come they’ll think you live a respectable life.

What direction do you see the music industry going towards?
Circling back towards “artists” who do music for the love of it (because the money will be limited). I think there will be more artists who can make a living doing music but less mega rich stars. Decentralization back to indie “labels” with good music and marketing strategies.. Then some conglomerate will come along and buy a few up/reduce overhead… That is how we’ll start rebuilding the major label system.

What is your favorite place to be in NYC?
My loft in the village.. Or Happy Ending on Broome..

What is your favorite shop?
Man, I have a bunch.. Blue & Cream, Yojhi Yamamoto, Nom de Guerre, Memes, Barneys, Loehmann’s

What is your favorite drink?
Vodka gimlet – not too much lime – and long island ice tea

What is your favorite restaurant?
I’m a very simple guy.. I like Sea Thai and Maroon. Dallas BBQ when I’m in a hood mood..

What is your favorite NYC book?
NYC book? Im not too familiar with books about NYC but I try to read The New Yorker when I can.

What is your favorite thing to do in NYC that you can do nowhere else?
Go out at 2 am. Any time you are out there is unlimited potential around any corner. I’ve went out to bars with my boys and we’ve met a group I eventually signed, hook-ups, an eventual wife, even the person who helped situate this interview. You just never know...

What do you think is most underrated and overrated here?
Underrated – Tribeca Film Festival, Chinatown and trips to Brooklyn
Overrated – Clubs on weekends and trips to Brooklyn

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
That I’m very excited about a group I’m working with now, The Black Fridays.. and if you see me around and you’ve read this – Say Something!

How would you like to be contacted by Whom You Know readers?
I’m on myspace at myspace.com/devospringsteen or on twitter at springsteezy!! Holla at ya boy!

PRODUCT ALERT: Clinique NEW Almost Bronzer SPF15

Here at Whom You Know, we advocate high standards in life: honesty, integrity, and the pursuit of excellence. However, in some cases a bit of cutting the corners and bending the rules is necessary. Peachy Deegan advocates a dishonest tan! We told you about self-tanners, we've told you about some spf products, and now to achieve the total look, we now bring you Bronzers!

The Clinique NEW Almost Bronzer SPF15 is a fabulous addition to achieving this goal. First, you must must MUST protect your skin with spf. As Peachy is a bit crazy about avoiding wrinkles, on the beach after applying spf, she loves the look that this bronzer gives. It comes in two shades: light/medium (shade 1) and medium/deep (shade 2). If you have a medium skin tone like Peachy as she is "black Irish" either will work well. If you are more towards olive certainly go medium/deep (shade 2) and if you are pale you need this even more and you should select light/medium (shade 1). This is a nice, classy shade and has no brassiness or orange tones.

The sheer bronzing duo protects with broad-spectrum SPF 15 which is insurance as Peachy sees it to her already applied spf lotion(applied first, separately. See review:)
http://www.whomyouknow.com/2009/04/product-alert-clinique-sun-spf-30-face.html

The Clinique versatile formula lets you customize and build your bronze from sun kissed to suntanned. The natural look is great all-year round, but optimal now that the summer season is here. This product is a fabulous addition to everyone's makeup collection!
