DAYLIGHT: Whom You Know Highly Recommends The Big Apple Circus
This past weekend, the Whom You Know Petite Peachy Panel attended the fabulous Big Apple Circus in Lincoln Center! We loved every minute. From the minute we began to enter the tent and Grandma the Clown came up to us (and did not know we were press) and greeted the most petite member of the group, asking her name and pleasantly posing with us for pictures, we knew the day would be a winner.
We first featured The Big Apple Circus:

And even one of our Movers and Shakers was a guest ringmaster:

In this digital age that we all love, sometimes the simplicity of entertainment can be overlooked. Not that one thing that happens in The Big Apple Circus is SIMPLE, actually QUITE the contrary...but our point is that the circus as an art form has existed for many, many generations and has beaten the test of time, proving it always will be a valued form of entertainment. At Whom You Know we embrace classic activities such as this.
The Big Apple Circus is immaculately clean. (We don't like dirty, we don't like smelly, you may see that at other circuses, but not at The Big Apple Circus.) When you walk into the tent you are greeted with a carnival-like atmosphere. We loved the hot dogs and cotton candy at the concession stands and the wait time was reasonable, even at the intermission. The band accompanying each performance was excellent and the live music definitely added to the overall quality of the entertainment. As we went into the Big Tent, the ushers were friendly and seated us right away.
The acts themselves are absolutely amazing and something to see, especially Bello Nock. The cover of the program says "Bello is Back," and we cannot imagine such a show without him. How lucky Manhattan is to have such a production just here in Lincoln Center! Every last detail of each performance amazed and entertained the crowd and it was nothing short of spectacular.

With a welcoming booming voice, the Ringmaster began the festivities and the first act was Bello's Gift. You absolutely just have to go see Bello; everything he does is amazing. If you see him doing one thing, just wait because next you will see him doing it backwards, higher, or some other superlative-enhanced way! The horses were next, shown above. We cannot imagine riding two horses at once, but as you can see it can be done, in The Big Apple Circus! Perhaps the funniest part of the whole day came when a very blond audience member came to the ring as Bello's assistant, and the Bow and Arrow trick was executed. Not everyone has shot a bow and arrow, but it is so important to hold the bow the right way...
Regina was incredible with the Aerial Silks and twisted into positions we did not know were possible so high up in mid-air! The Long Twins entertained us with more figure twisting that made us wonder if they have the same DNA as Gumby while Grandma gained many laughs throughout the performance. As you might expect, there were escapades on the trampoline and trapeze, which were indeed incredible, but our favorite part of the whole circus was the Wheel of Wonder, shown below.

The tricks that were performed every which way in, on and around the wheel were truly unique from our perspective and provided the utmost in circus entertainment. You really have to go see this for yourself.
Bello really is Back! The Big Apple Circus in Manhattan should really be considered the first X Games minus the competition. It is truly amazing some of the tricks they have conjured up. The whole event is quite an experience from first walking around Lincoln Center and then down to the one ring tent popped up in the middle of NYC.
I just love intimate more exclusive events and the Big Apple Circus is just that. Not a bad seat in the house! Plus, good circus food at reasonably affordable prices for a NYC event. The show lasts 1 hour and 50 minutes including intermission. Great for all ages, my two year old daughter just loved Grandma Clown. We loved that she was available before the show for pictures, it really set the stage and allowed my daughter to be immediately involved. The jokes were timely and funny to both her and my husband.

Then introducing the super star of the show, Bello. What an fabulous entertainer and extremely talented and I mean extreme! Bello could accompany many of the performers and was doing the same tricks that the acrobats, trapeze and death defying wheel of danger were doing. Just amazing!
Bello is accompanied by performers from all over the world: Spain’s juggling artiste, Picaso Jr., Russia’s Aniskin Troupe an amazing acrobat on the trampoline. Aerialist Regina Dobrovitskaya glides through the air on shimmering ribbons. Equestrians Christine and Sultan that ride horses Roman-Style (Standing-Up on two horses, one leg on each horse). The most spectacular by far was the Double Wheel of Wonder that spun top on top with men in each wheel. It is hard to describe so you must go see in person. Think spinning wheel 75 feet high in the air and Bello doing flips and spins and so forth. I think I had my teeth clenched the entire time. Totally exhilarating.

Our next favorite was the hand-to-hand acrobatic act of the Curatola Troupe. A incredible showing of balance, strength and agility combined with acrobatics. You think landing on a 6 inch wooden beam is hard, try to land on two hands. This was their first appearance in the Big Apple Circus and hopefully not their last.
In addition to perfoming dogs, dancing horses and ping-pong ball mouth jugglers, we were excited to see the very flexible Long twins. In to the ring came this pair of identical twins from China. During their successful six-year act in Las Vegas at the Luxor Casino, the versatile twins developed their specialties, which include hoop diving, contortion rings, double pole climbing, and ring and hat juggling. Their signature, crowd-pleasing act is a seven-minute acrobatic barrel routine which is what they performed at the circus.
What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon with kids or without!
Whom You Know Highly Recommends The Big Apple Circus. Although it is not running in Lincoln Center right now, it will be running in their location in Cunningham Park, Queens, from May 22 through June 6 if you didn't get to see the show at Lincoln Center.
