DAYLIGHT: OVER 20 CELEBRITIES & VIPS ATTEND THE STAR-STUDDED 9TH ANNUAL WOMEN WHO CARE LUNCHEON BENEFITTING UNITED CEREBRAL PALSY OF NEW YORK CITY A New York Tradition Celebrating the Accomplishments of Extraordinary Women as Caregivers, Volunteers & Professionals
The 9th Annual Women Who Care Luncheon benefitting United Cerebral Palsy of New York City was held yesterday afternoon at Cipriani 42nd Street. The sold-out event celebrated the accomplishments of extraordinary women as caregivers, volunteers and professionals. Whom You Know highly recommends this organization and this event and it is one not to miss next year.
Producer/Philanthropist/ Disability Rights Activist, and our Mover and Shaker (see here for Loreen's Mover and Shaker piece) Loreen Arbus is Founder & Chair of Women Who Care. Cathleen P. Black, President, Hearst Magazines Group is Honorary Chair. Donna Hanover served as Host for the event. Joan Jedell, Publisher, Hampton Sheet, is Co-Chair, Women Who Care.
Highlights of this year’s Women Who Care event were presentations by over a dozen Celebrity Presenters:
- Today Show host Meredith Vieira presented The Women Who Care Award to her Today Show colleague Ann Curry.
- Alan Richman presented The Women Who Care Award to Francine LeFrak.
- Cynthia Nixon presented The Women Who Care award to Linda Kaplan Thaler.
- Brenda Saget Darling, Vice President & Publisher of More Magazine presented the The Women Who Care Award to honoree JoanAnn Natola.
In addition to the four 2010 Women Who Care Honorees, Special Presentations were also given for two Marquee Awards:
- Dr. Mehmet Oz presented The Luella Bennack Award to Dr. Pamela F. Gallin.
- Jimmy Smits, starring in the new film, Mother & Child, presented the final award of the afternoon, The Karen Hansen Caregiver Award to Anita & Gary Geresi.
In addition, several celebrities appeared to offer insightful stories illustrating real life examples of ways in which United Cerebral Palsy of New York City has affected the lives of people living with disabilities. The stories focused on UCP/NYC’s “Doorways to Independence,” a successful new program which helps families stay together by offering help to transform homes into places where people living with disabilities can live independent lives.
In addition to Cynthia Nixon, Jimmy Smits, Meredith Vieira and Alan Rickman, the other celebrity presenters were: Robin Givens, Actress & Author; Tinsley Mortimer, High Society; Paula Zahn, host of On The Case With Paula Zahn; Tamara Tunie, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit; Bryan Batt, Mad Men; Mike Woods, Fox’s 5’s Good Day New York;Timothy Mandala, star of the upcoming movies Experiment 7, Under The Influence & China Doll; Rita Cosby, TV Host & author; SaCha Stewart-Coleman and Eden Duncan-Smith, stars of “Fences” on Broadway.
“Women Who Care was created to honor female role models representing various segments of the community,” said Loreen Arbus, Founder & Chair of Women Who Care. “It is a celebration of women who have blazed new paths, broken glass ceilings and inspired others to achieve. It honors the memory of my mother, Isabelle Goldenson, who co-founded with my father, Leonard H. Goldenson, Founder/Chairman, ABC, the 5th largest healthy agency in America. She was responsible for all the groundbreaking ideas in the Architectural Barriers Act. It also honors Miss Karen Hansen who took care of my older sister without ever taking a vacation, from age two, all the years of her life.”
