Annual Star-Studded Event Returns to Governors Island on Sunday, June 27th
WHO: Veuve Clicquot Champagne brings one of the most highly-anticipated events of the season, the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, back to New York on Sunday, June 27, 2010
WHAT: Taking place on Governors Island, a quick ferry ride from downtown Manhattan, the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, will attract a fashionable crowd from around the globe and feature the glamour and excitement of polo – “the sport of kings.” Now in its third year, the event promises to deliver the ultimate in champagne sipping, people-watching and the thrill of the polo match with world-class players --including Nacho Figueras, event co-chair and captain of the BlackWatch polo team-- all set against the spectacular Manhattan skyline.
Building on the success of last year’s event, the 2010 Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic will again benefit the American Friends of Sentebale, the American arm of Sentebale. Founded in 2004 by HRH Prince Henry of Wales and HRH Prince Seeiso of Lesotho in honor of their mothers, Sentebale’s mission is to help the orphans and at-risk children of Lesotho, Southern Africa.
Poised to be the most stylish and star-studded event of the season, last year’s Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic drew over 6,000 consumer picnic-goers and VIP spectators including Madonna, Kate Hudson, Marc Jacobs, Chloe Sevigny, LL Cool J, Donna Karan, Lucy Sykes, Rachel Roy, Hilary Rhoda and Alex Wek all cheering on Prince Harry and Nacho Figueras as they went head-to-head on the Polo field for a worthy cause.

Beginning at 11am, VIP ferries for reserved ticket holders will depart from the Battery Park City ferry departure point located at 199 Vesey Street Pier (Vesey and North End Ave). Trolley transportation once on Governors Island will be provided.
Public ferries for non-VIP ticket holders will also be departing from the Battery Maritime Building, located adjacent to the Staten Island Ferry in lower Manhattan

Polo was played regularly on Governors Island when it was an Army base and matches were played throughout the early part of the 20th century, with the last match being played just before World War II in September 1941. Veuve Clicquot brought polo back to Governors Island in May 2008, almost 70 years since it was last played on the island.
