Whom You Know visited Afghan Kebab House and it has been elevated to Peachy's Picks!  The amazing spices and overall warm atmosphere in addition to the quality of the food of course make it a winner.  Izmar you have quite a gem here.  It's been open for over 20 years and it's clear why! You'll feel like you're on a magic carpet ride the minute you walk in, and of course we love the chandelier too.

Peachy began with the Aushak-a new word for her.  It is boiled dumplings filled with scallions, herbs and spices toped with minted yogurt sauce and ground beef.  The sauce is so smooth and the texture of the beef is excellent.  A great way to start your meal, we recommend it.
A fresh green salad was in order next, and it was fabulous.  We love that a green salad is an international thing!  For her entree, though she was tempted to get the beloved Shrimp kabab, she decided to try something new-the Combo which was ground beef, chicken and chunks of beef!  All were equally amazing, but if she had to pick one she thinks the shrimp is even better.
The rice is totally addictive, and you will not be able to get enough of it.  Joined by carrots and raisins, it is one of the best comfort foods we've encountered.  Afghan Kebab House II is BYOB so we certainly did!  Peachy brought a panelist, who comments:

When you walk into the cozy, one-room Afghan Kebab House on 2nd Ave. and 71st St., the spice-filled aroma, dim lighting, and traditional Afghan decor make you feel as if you've escaped Manhattan altogether.  Owner Izmar greets, seats and waits on all diners and his pride in his establishment is clear.

To start, I decided to try the Bolanee Kadu, which is a fried turnover filled with mashed pumpkin, herbs and spices.  I love all things pumpkin, and this was the first time I've had it prepared this way - but it definitely won't be the last!  The warm turnover was light and flaky, and the herbs and spices were the perfect complement to the sweet pumpkin.  The accompanying yogurt sauce was delicious, as well!  Next, it was a simple green salad served with yogurt dressing.  The greens were crisp and fresh, and the dressing was delicious!  For my main course, I had the Tandoori Chicken Breast Kebab, which may well be the best kebab I've ever eaten!
The chicken was extremely tender and the tandoori masala was perfectly spiced.  Accompanying the kebab was heavenly basmati rice, along with Afghan bread, both of which helped to round out the meal very nicely!  Overall, a terrific dining experience and one that I hope to experience again soon!
