READ THIS: Bossypants by Tina Fey
Tina Fey had us at hello when she said her book was American-made! Yay Tina! But it is much more than just that-it is pure wit that will leave you wishing that Tina was going to be drinking champagne with you at a cocktail party tonight because even if you each drank ten glasses it would be funnier to see the bubbles coming out of her nose first. In all seriousness, which this book is not, this is an exemplary work that is testament to the fact that women are funny. Not only do we love Tina, but we love her dad. He seems to think using who instead of whom would be INEXCUSABLE. High five, Mr. Fey! The description of the six train on page 112 is priceless..Jennifer Lopez you should have considered this before naming that past album on the 6. We were dying when all-jerk workplaces were defined...you know who was a trader and who even wrote a term paper on Filene's Basement. Brown Hair! Glasses! Peachy Deegan HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommends this book. But don't listen to just Peachy. The hilarious intellects of Whom You Know add:
If you want to laugh, read this book. "Bossypants" by Tina Fey is, as to be expected, funny. But if you were expecting just funny, you will be sorely disappointed as this book is so much more than just funny. Ms. Fey is blunt, self-deprecating, intelligent, and of course, funny! This cleverly written book is a quick read and nothing is a quick read for me anymore as I am the mom of a preschooler and "me" time is hard to come by. Fey is a natural story-teller, taking the reader with her from childhood to her first ("and only", she points out) day job at the YMCA in Evanston, Illinois to her beginnings as a comedienne to her SNL days and now, 30 Rock. Tina Fey wears many coats...she is a mother, a comedienne, a writer, a producer and the list goes on. "Bossypants" is a little bit of everything...a little bit biography, a little bit comedy (ok, a lot comedy), a little bit instructional. I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed this book, I knew it would make me laugh, but I didn't know how much I would enjoy the behind-the-scenes stories from SNL and 30 Rock or how much her witty humor about motherhood would affect me. My favorite part of this book? The chapter entitled "Dear Internet" in which Ms. Fey replies to statements made about her on the internet. Statements such as "Tina Fey is an ugly, pear-shaped, bitchy, overrated troll." Her response is priceless. See for yourself. Page 164. Your immune system will thank you for it (FYI: laughter boosts the immune system)! I have never burst out loud laughing while reading a book before. That is, I hadn't until I read Bossypants by Tina Fey. This book is absolutely hilarious. The same great sense of humor that Tina Fey has brought to television, movies, and countless episodes of SNL is found on every page of this highly entertaining book. It was so entertaining, in fact, that I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. Tina Fey tells the story of how she grew up, and how she achieved the great success she enjoys today. She gives the real facts of her life, but she does through a comedic lens that will keep you smiling and laughing till the end. Every page I read, I had to reread it aloud to whoever was nearby. This stuff is so funny I couldn't keep it to myself! If you are a fan of Tina Fey, you have to get a copy of this book! You will love it!! I LOVE Tina Fey. She has to be one of the funniest women I've watched and love anything she does. I was so excited when her book came out and couldn't wait to read it. I was so glad I read this book. Very few books had me laughing so hard I was crying. Her beauty secrets were by far my favorite. While she tells jokes at her own expense, I admire that she can tell these stores. Not many people can be so open as she is in this book. This is a book I would read over and over again. This is a book that would make a perfect gift for any Tina Fey fan! As I sat in a Starbucks on the Upper East Side, I attracted more than a few questioning glances as I chuckled, giggled, and snorted my way through the pages of Tina Fey's Bossypants. I've been a casual fan of Ms. Fey's since her days on Saturday Night Live, and have always enjoyed her quick wit, intelligent humor, and easygoing, approachable manner. I was curious to see how this would translate to the written word and was amazed by just how well it did! Anecdotes about childhood woes, college experiences, love life mishaps and "day job" misadventures keep the pace brisk and provide a laugh (or more!) a minute. Interestingly, these were woven in with stories about the struggles of women to achieve equality in the field of comedy, the challenge of balancing work and family, and the hurdles associated with being "the boss." Her self-deprecating humor gives every reader something to sympathize with, whether it's a horribly misguided mountain-climbing date with a non-boyfriend in college or a dreary, dead-end job at the YMCA. I found the stories about her beginnings in comedy to be particularly engrossing; for a woman who appears to have it all, it seems hard to believe that she had to fight her way into a mainstage Second City troupe (they had traditionally had a 4-man, 2-woman ensemble, but Ms. Fey was a member of the first troupe composed of 3 men and 3 women). One of the things I like best about this book is that, while it is undoubtedly hilarious, Ms. Fey's strength and determination shine through beautifully. From the awkward young teenager in Upper Darby, PA, to the "boss" of 30 Rock, this is a woman who refuses to take no for an answer and her positive, "can-do" attitude has stood her in good stead as she has carved out her own path in a traditionally male dominated field. Overall, a thoroughly enjoyable, immensely readable book! http://www.hachettebookgroup.com *** Before Liz Lemon, before "Weekend Update," before "Sarah Palin," Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV. She has seen both these dreams come true. At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live; from her passionately halfhearted pursuit of physical beauty to her life as a mother eating things off the floor; from her one-sided college romance to her nearly fatal honeymoon -- from the beginning of this paragraph to this final sentence. Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've all suspected: you're no one until someone calls you bossy.
