Terrific Takeout: La Mediterranee
Now that we've seen their fabulous website, it should surprise no one that Gloria Vanderbilt and Peachy Deegan are both advocates of the cuisine at La Mediterranee. They did both go to Miss Porter's of course... This smashing French bistro happened to reopen yesterday after an unfortunate fire and it was by chance that Peachy happened to meet the charming owner Ernesto Morel and decide to feature them in our takeout column for starters. Peachy had the half organic chicken, slow roasted with garlic and rosemary and every bite was tender, juicy and flavorful. And as you know she's Irish she does consider herself a bit of an authority on potatoes in all forms and this mashed version was tops.
Of course the takeout does not come on Mikasa china but you know that is what Peachy uses.
Ernesto is from Nice and is one of the most pleasant restaurant owners we've recently met. Like Robert Caravaggi at Swifty's, he is the one that answers the phone when you call and personally seats you when you arrive. The piano player was charming to listen to when we swung by and the whole atmosphere makes us want to return.
The caesar salad with garlic bread (amazing!!!) and parmesan shavings was simply delightful.
The garlic was truly authentic and we loved it.
And to prove to you all that Manhattan IS really a small world, Ernesto told us he opened La Mangeoire in 1973...and we had thought it started with our friend Gerard Donato...
La Mediterranee is Terrific Takeout and you should order tonight!
