One of my favorite books while growing up was Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I loved the mystery and excitement of the novel. Ever since reading that book, I have been interested in the Sherlock Holmes character and his various incarnations in popular media. Sometimes, I find myself disappointed in how he is portrayed. In the case of "Sherlock: A New Sleuth for the 21st Century," released by BBC Home Entertainment, they got everything just right! This new television series has an interesting twist, however. Instead of being set over one hundred years ago, this new story takes place in present day London! Don't worry though, Holmes and Watson are still in the story, and with same quirks and personality traits you expect from the characters. The series builds off the great stories written by Doyle, and makes them fresh, new and exciting. If you are a Sherlock Holmes fan, or even if you just enjoy drama and mystery with some comic relief thrown in, you will love this new series!

From the first exchange with a beleaguered Watson, this new interpretation of Sherlock Holmes grabs our interest. Long an avid fan of anything Sherlockian, my attention was captured by the possibility of carrying on the legacy of that astute, acerbic detective and his sidekick in crime-solving.  This new series will only add to the annals so adroitly began by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. We have our Lestrade and the cast of characters that have endeared the case studies to our hearts. Add modern tekkie tricks to the formula and you get a sort of ADD Sherlock. Inimitable in his process and relentless in his pursuit, Sherlock Holmes now rolls through contemporary criminal activity. The actors embody the vital signs of the Holmes/Watson we have seen through literature and film. Angular, bringing to mind Basil Rathbone and his Holmes of the 1940's . Terse, to the point of being intrusive, Holmes has always snared both his audience and his objectives.
And so it continues. And we will be there.

Sherlock Holmes has always been one of my favorite stories. A few months ago, I had the opportunity to watch Season 2 of Sherlock by BBC Home Entertainment and loved it. I was so excited to watch Season 1. Now that I have, the few lingering questions I had while watching Season 2 have been answered. The acting was brilliant and you could see the chemistry beginning to form between Sherlock and Watson. What I love the most is that it's set in modern day England. I love the updated feel of the series. I found myself laughing out loud many times. I believe that once you see this series for yourself, you'll see how wonderfully awesome this show is. I know I could watch it over and over and never get tired of it. I can't wait for Season 3!

I first fell in love with Sherlock Holmes about ten years ago, when I read The Complete Sherlock Holmes cover to cover. I've since read it cover-to-cover at least four or five more times, and continue to be fascinated by the brilliant master of deduction. And now, thanks to BBC Home Entertainment, my favorite detective has come to life in the fantastic Sherlock. Co-created bySteven Moffat and Mark Gatiss in 2010, Sherlock does a remarkable job of bringing the world's most famous sleuth into the 21st century while remaining true to the spirit of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories. Mr. Holmes (perfectly portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch) still relies on his powers of deduction, reasoning, and keen observation to solve crimes, but he is now aided by technology including cell phones and GPS tracking mechanisms. Holmes' famous sidekick, Dr. Watson (Martin Freeman), has also received a 21st century makeover, having just returned home from serving in the war in Afghanistan, where he was wounded - a perfect parallel to the Watson of the Conan Doyle stories, who was wounded serving in Afghanistan in the Second Anglo-Afghan War. The updated Watson, though, instead of keeping a diary of his adventures with Holmes, writes (what else?) a blog! Other favorite characters are back, including Scotland Yard's Detective Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves), and loveable landlady of 221b Baker Street, Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs). The first season of Sherlock consists of three episodes: A Study in Pink, The Blind Banker, and The Great Game. While the specific stories are new, each of the plots draws elements from the original Conan Doyle stories, which are seamlessly worked in to the new adventures of Sherlock. An enthralling series and a must-see for any Sherlock Holmes fan!

Season 1 of Sherlock was really fun to watch. I was a bit skeptical of the fact it was "modernized" (it takes place in modern London). I have to admit it actually works very well and I loved it. It actually makes this classic a bit easier to relate to. The series is written very well, and I fell in love with the characters. BBC definitely got it right. If you are looking for yet another series to be addicted to, this one is it. It is well worth the addiction. Benedict Cumberbatch isn't too bad to look at either. You will enjoy every moment of this series, I promise.

The BBC introduces a fresh, new interpretation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s most famous detective series in the DVD and Blu-ray release - Sherlock: Season One. Penned by Doctor Who scribes Steven Moffat (Steven Spielberg's upcoming Tintin, Jekyll, Coupling) and Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen), Sherlock is a fast-paced, edgy, contemporary series which manages to maintain the original spirit of the literary crime-solving icon. Fresh from the war in Afghanistan, a chance encounter brings Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman, The Office, The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) into the life of the enigmatic detective Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch, Atonement, The Last Enemy). The two men couldn’t be more different, but Sherlock’s dazzling leaps of intellect and John’s down-to-earth pragmatism balance each other perfectly, and they soon forge an unbreakable alliance.

This 2-disc set contains all three stories along with the pilot version of the first episode, making-of featurette Unlocking Sherlock, and audio commentary by Cumberbatch, Freeman, Moffat and more.
