I am always looking for new and unique ways to spice up my cooking. I decided to cook up some fluke this weekend, and I wanted it to be special. I used the usual ingredients - olive oil, white wine, and capers, but it wasn't enough. That is when I reached for Fresh Origins Mustard Flowers. These tiny flowers are a bright, beautiful yellow, and they really added some color to the dish. Not only that, but they actually taste like mustard! This was exactly what the fish needed to go from average to extraordinary! My guests absolutely loved the dish! Those tiny flowers gave me points for both taste and presentation! I look forward to using them again soon!
So, you think you know mustard, right? Lovely condiment, yellow, can be spicy...but did you ever think about where it comes from? Mustard is made from mustard seeds. However, as we all know, plants are more than just seeds...so, enter: mustard flower! Mustard flower is one of many edible flowers occurring in nature, and can be a vibrant, exciting addition to salads, soups, cocktails and other tasty treats. Fresh Origins, the top-notch family-run farm in the San Diego area, is known for being the largest grower of microgreens and edible flowers in the country, and their Mustard Flowers provide a welcome dose of freshness, cheer and spice into any meal. The small, bright yellow flowers have a mild, slightly spicy flavor. I tossed some into a mixed green salad for an extra splash of color and flavor, and they were a terrific addition! The mustard flowers would also work well as pretty, cheerful decorations to cakes or cupcakes. Thank you, Fresh Origins, for introducing me to this colorful and versatile treat!

Ask, and ye shall receive , it has been said, so talk to the restauranteur about their choice in garnish. The whole world awaits Spring, and what better way to bring it, than as a cheerful little garnish on the plate?
I have never eaten a Mustard Flower before. I can't help but notice it looks like a Buttercup. It is not a Buttercup. I can feel it in the back of my throat. It tastes most like a spice, more so than the Begonia Flower or Oyster Leaf. It's hard to pin down. I keep eating one after another trying to nail it. Those two warm days we had in the Northeast last week made everything bloom all at once. I'm suffering with allergies. Is the Mustard Flower opening up my sinuses? A very interesting taste sensation, and a cure for the common cold? All hail the Mustard Flower!
