You know it must be sweet if Peachy Deegan went north of 96th Street!  Opened in April 2012, Sweet Jane's has brought style, fantastic cocktails, super cuisine and a top event space to a neighborhood where venues of this caliber are extremely rare.  Yes you read that right-we did a review in East Harlem and Sweet Jane's is located on 106th Street between 3rd and Lexington.  It is the cleanest place around by far.  Sweet Jane's is the brainchild of the guy who knows how to execute Ever to Excel, Billy Bishop, also famous on Whom You Know for Point Break if you are so inclined to hang ten, and his partner John Jason, otherwise known as JJ, from the awesome state of Connecticut!  We had such a fantastic time at Point Break, we thought we'd open our minds to 106th street and certainly it helps that Billy is an Eagle too, inquiring readers from Chestnut Hill.  Billy and JJ have been in this business for two decades and if you haven't been to Sweet Jane's, it's worth a trip uptown.
Sweet Jane's was first featured in Tasty Tidbits:
We are pleased to announce it has joined the ranks of Peachy's Picks.
Peachy Deegan began with a Sam Adams, which is on tap.  In this mild spring weather, it hit the spot and was a lovely beginning to a sweet evening in more ways than one!
Catfish bites!  How fun.  Fresh-caught catfish tossed in a cajun dust sets the right mood.  The breading was light and flaky-perfection!  The spicy aioli was an ideal companion to the fish that was fresh and delicious.  This is an appetizer that everyone should try, even if you are only going for a cocktail you need these little guys.  We would be remiss in not informing you of their decadence!
We thought we tried all the Whisky's of the world at our friend Dave Sweet's Whisky Live event last week, however this one must have escaped us.  Jacob's Ghost White Whiskey was the right choice to sip in our Manhattan.
You can still be classy and sip your Manhattan with your pinky out in East Harlem!  To be truthful, Peachy and Billy were probably the only ones paying homage to Ralph Lauren from a fashion standpoint there, but everyone at Boston College dresses that way and neither of them seemed to have changed.  The Manhattan was perfectly mixed and Loren Amos who hails from Texas proved to be a skilled head bartender!
By the way, Sweet Jane's is named after the Lou Reed song...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=txX3BeVvKgY.
There are five green salads to choose from (we can almost hear the applause coming from MB in City Hall...) at Sweet Jane's and the Cobb Salad was divine.  We liked the arrangement in vertical rows.  Romaine lettuce, bacon, eggs, tomatoes, avocados and blue cheese hung out together in perfect harmony, just like the diverse crowd of people in Sweet Jane's.
The 8 ounce Angus Burger was calling Peachy Deegan's name, and they became fast friends.  Grilled perfectly, the burger was juicy and delicious and she chose mozzarella cheese to join the party.  The French Fries were also amazing and short lived.
Do check out the pictures on the walls-they are terrific!  Here's Billy Bishop's father...he was in the Army.  Here is Billy's dad with Billy:
You can tell how much fun Billy is even as a kid.   Maybe he got his fishbowl idea back then...you have to try one of the fishbowls, which are akin to the Scorpion Bowl at Point Break.  We tried the Electric Blue (to be frank, we tried two of them, with Billy's help) which is filled with tantalizing mystery ingredients like fruity liqueurs, blue curacao, triple sec, vodka and rum.  If you have even an ounce of fun in you, you'll love it as well.
And here is JJ playing with a lobster!  When you see JJ ask him about his twins that are on the way...very exciting!  Billy also has twins.
Our esteemed panelist adds:
Our first restaurant review above 96th Street was a rousing success - we thoroughly enjoyed our time at Sweet Jane's! Owners Billy and JJ gave us a very warm welcome, and the atmosphere was casual, fun, and lively. When we arrived at 6 p.m., there were a few patrons at the bar, and a few people sitting at tables in the dining room, but by the time we left, it was standing room only, as people squeezed in to watch the comedy show taking place in the dining room! The menu is simple but thorough, and it is based on what Sweet Jane's customers enjoy.
To start, I sipped a cool, refreshing Modelo as we munched on Catfish Bites (one of the most popular appetizers on the menu).
Tossed in cajun dust, fried to a golden brown, and served with a spicy aioli, the catfish bites were warm, tender, and satisfying. Next, Billy brought over head bartender/mixologist Loren Amos to help us select a cocktail. Mr. Amos was thoughtful and friendly, and ended up whipping up some special Manhattans for us, featuring Jacob's Ghost white whiskey by Jim Beam, and dry vermouth.
They were outstanding!
As we sipped those, we perused the menu and made our selections for salads and entrees. I opted for the Caesar Salad, which was perfectly prepared, and for my entree, I chose the Market Pasta with grilled chicken.
The Market Pasta features fresh vegetables, which on this day included broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, and cauliflower. I loved this dish - the pasta was perfectly al dente, and the vegetables were tasty, fresh, and tender. The grilled chicken was a nice addition, and the whole dish was topped with grated Parmesan cheese, which gave it a little extra oomph! To wrap things up, we moved out to the bar to sample Sweet Jane's famous fishbowls - yummy, fruity cocktails served in (you guessed it) - fishbowls! Mr. Amos whipped up a delectable Blue Electric Jane for us to share with Billy, and if I closed my eyes while I was sipping it, I could imagine for a moment that I was on a tropical island, surrounded by white sand and palm trees. Featuring vodka, rum, blue curacao, pineapple juice and some other "secret ingredients," the drink was a great escape from the hustle-bustle of NYC!
In addition to the great food and drinks, Sweet Jane's has a terrific lineup of events - comedy nights, karaoke nights, and more. It attracts a fun-loving crowd of regulars, and it's easy to see why. The warm, relaxed atmosphere, the friendly staff, the outstanding food & drinks, and the regularly scheduled events all conspire to make Sweet Jane's a true standout in the area. Well worth the trip to 106th Street!
