Peachy and Lauren at BEA last week
"There is a special place in hell for women who don't help other women." says Madeleine Albright (we reviewed her book too), and whether you work in high finance or high fashion, it is likely you have met one or two mean girls in your career, and we can tell you from firsthand experience when you work with one of them, it can ruin your life. Ten years ago, we commiserated with the protagonist Andy in the Devil Wears Prada, not just because she's from the illustrious town of Avon (almost as good as Farmington), but because we have had some miserable work experiences too. One of the best aspects of Whom You Know for Peachy is having a great relationship with her boss (herself!). We are all about helping other women that pursue excellence, and men too for that matter, and the one that needs to be highlighted bold red underlined today is
LAUREN WEISBERGER.
Make sure you like her
because you are going to love her next hit. It comes out tomorrow, so mark your calendar!
Revenge Wears Prada shows Andy, evolved. Parts of it were Emily Giffin-esque, and it has a pronounced differentiation from the original as it is centered around weddings and babies. If you are into weddings and babies you will absolutely adore the storyline. If you are not, hold your horses because Lauren's literary skill takes you to places where you don't care what the subject is, as long as she's the one writing. Andy is still the same-she knows David's Bridal gets a big no way and no dyeable shoes (probably made in China quelle horreur!)-whether you're a single girl or a married girl you can come to an agreement on good taste. Enter Emily for the girls that are not into baby this and baby that-her strong emphasis on career and style (she is the one that trained Andy, after all!) will delight you and you'll want to high-five her.
You will be in stitches as Andy faces the inevitable right from the opening scene, though Andy, you need to be more practical in the rain and get yourself a pair of Aigle boots: uber-fashionable, Made in France for over 150 years-since 1853 to be exact. A prince on a white horse is not always available for rescues...Andy's dilemmas unfold and the drama ensues page after page. Peachy herself read the entire book in 24 hours over 2 days (she had to stop for dinner-check out The Fourth it is amazing!). From mother-in-law horrors (well, at least this witch has been banished to the West side-Barbara we give you low marks for not knowing how close Avon is to Litchfield...) to comparisons to ex-girlfriends (seriously Katherine, you can't be THAT preppy if you are going to a co-ed school, decidedly less preppy than single sex according to Prep Goddess Carol) to, and guess where she's going to dinner (we won't ruin the surprise!) you will be right there with Andy as she faces up to conflict in a bigger ways than ever before, if you can believe that.
Lauren Weisberger possesses an uncanny ability to get you to love the characters she wants you to love and hate the characters she wants you to hate. This intensity only glorifies the whole reading experience. Lauren makes intelligent decisions with characters, scenarios and most of all, plots. There are complicated relationships, ethical questionable scenarios, huge betrayals...the plot does thicken, but we won't ruin it for you. And nightmares do come true!
Lauren also shows she knows what is going on in New York: Patrick McMullan at the best events photographing the best pictures is de rigueur. Other people we like: Sylvia Weinstock is mentioned, Annie's Cheddar Bunnies makes an appearance and we appreciate the Downton Abbey references too! Bottom line-she's speaking our language.
Revenge Wears Prada is Recommended by Whom You Know! Bravo Lauren.
(P.S. We reinforce that this is a work of fiction, but you might enjoy our coverage of Punk at The Met!)

Ten years ago, Lauren Weisberger introduced readers to Andy Sachs, Miranda Priestly and Runway magazine in her debut novel The Devil Wears Prada. Weisberger’s story of a green assistant thrown into New York’s fashion elite was not only a #1 international bestseller published in forty languages, but a cultural phenomenon. Fox Century 2006 released the major motion picture adaptation starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, which grossed $300 million worldwide.
For the millions of fans eagerly anticipating an update on Weisberger’s beloved characters, the wait is finally over. The devil is back. REVENGE WEARS PRADA: The Devil Returns (Simon & Schuster, June 4, 2013; $25.99) is the scintillating sequel that puts readers right back into the fast-paced New York City world of now successful journalist Andy Sachs, her partner in crime Emily Charlton, the notorious and colorful Nigel, and of course…the devil herself.
Almost a decade has passed since Andrea “Andy” Sachs quit the job “a million girls would die for” working for Miranda Priestly, editor-in-chief of Runway, the most influential fashion and luxury magazine in the world. But the dream job turned out to be Andy’s worst nightmare. Life at Runway was all-consuming, leaving Andy’s personal life in shambles. Her relationship with college sweetheart Alex snapped under the pressure of her Runway lifestyle, and she was left picking up the pieces.
But now it’s been years since Andy fetched coffee for the world’s most demanding boss. She has matured and is at the top of game writing and reporting to her heart’s content as co-founder of The Plunge, a wildly successful high fashion bridal magazine launched with Miranda’s other ex-assistant, Emily. Once sworn enemies, Andy and Emily found they had one powerful thing in common: their hatred of Miranda. Uniting forces to create The Plunge meant that each would finally get to call the shots in creating the ultimate go-to magazine for the young and stylish. And it didn’t hurt that they could drop Miranda’s name to secure the most in vogue celebrity brides for their pages.
Reuniting with Emily also introduced Andy to Max Harrison, the fabulously wealthy son of one of New York City’s most elite families and heir to a media empire. Not only is Max one of the original investors for The Plunge, he’s the love of Andy’s life. Engaged to the city’s most eligible bachelor just as her career is igniting, Andy is living the dream. But as the saying goes, all that glitters is not gold. The morning of her wedding, Andy discovers a secret letter from Max’s mother with crushing implications. Suddenly nothing—not her husband nor her beloved job—is as it seems. Co-owning the hottest magazine on the market doesn’t come without its snares…and the magazine world is a small one.
Andy and Emily thought they’d escaped their Runway troubles, but everyone knows you can’t run from the devil. Filled with celebrity weddings, exotic destinations and a window into the glitz and intrigue of the fashion world, REVENGE WEARS PRADA proves that getting even never goes out of style.
