Whom You Know began in early 2009, and we featured Luke's Lobster first in Tasty Tidbits, which preceded Terrific Takeout:
We thought Ben Conniff and team did a great job, so they graduated to Peachy's Picks in 2010:
However, we have not featured the New York location in four years now-which is not an indication of how much we liked them- so maybe that will move up on the list because we were reminded of how great this brand is by Lilly the Regional Manager in Washington. We've expanded beyond the island of Manhattan now, and when Peachy Deegan was strolling down M Street in Georgetown (M street is where the Westin is!) she saw a chalkboard with a lobster and the word Luke and she knew that could only mean one thing: great lobster rolls! And now it all makes sense because Luke himself is a Georgetown Grad...(Up with the Jesuits!)
Luke's Lobster sells many exciting items from Maine as well we learned. We are huge proponents of American manufacturing of excellent products; see our column on that here. Our favorite product from Maine is without a doubt Maine Woolens, but we don't eat blankets...
We eat lobster rolls!
So, Lilly was put on the spot, which we rarely do, and she rose to the occasion and really impressed us. We often say anything boys can do, girls can do better! (Stay tuned for more on that from Dr. Jen Welter, another product of an amazing Jesuit institution of higher education.)
There's something about Manhattan we do not care for and it's Manhattan Clam Chowder. Peachy Deegan has gotten super-open-minded in most culinary endeavors however it does not extend to our beloved NEW ENGLAND clam chowder. Peachy hated all kinds of clam chowder as a kid but then in college, the dining hall had Legal Sea Foods Clam Chowder on Fridays. She was even more motivated to be a sportswriter when she knew it was also served in the press box.
New England Clam chowder at Luke's Lobster in Georgetown at 1211 Potomac Street is exactly as it's supposed to be. It warms you up on a windy day and is thick and rich! Succulent little clams swim around happily in the bowl, but will be more delighted to reside in your stomach.
The Jonah Crab Claws were terrifically fresh and presented beautifully. Though we tried the cocktail sauce and liked it, the quality of this crab is so superior we ate three out of four of them straight without sauce and the natural flavor was great. This is probably quite healthy as well!
Bien sur, the piece de resistance at Luke's Lobster is the Lobster Roll. You have not lived until you've eaten it. Served with soda, chips and a pickle, it must be the reason for the phenomenal growth of this brand: see they have eleven locations as of now. The pictures should speak for themselves and please keep your computer screen clean, everyone!
Can your stomach read?
Blissful lobster meat!
Sustainably harvested in cold Maine Waters, the lobster is fresh and chilled perfectly served on a buttered, toasted New England-style split-top bun with a swipe of Mayo, a sprinkle of lemon butter and a dash of their secret spices which in a word, rock. Every bite is culinary achievement! And did you know that lobster has lower cholesterol than chicken?
So yes, Luke's Lobster is Terrific Takeout. Luke and Ben may have gotten the press first, but Lilly is doing a superior job in the Mid-Atlantic and did a great follow-up!
