Few people experience a perfect family, and anyone that says they've got one is not telling the truth! Everyone has a little dysfunction in their gene pool, and perhaps the characters of "This is Where I Leave You" have a bit more than others! This blockbuster opens nationwide tomorrow, and is a hilarious escapade about a funeral and the ramifications it has on a Jewish family from Long Island. Religion and Geographic location are mainly irrelevant-this will be a festival of laughter for the audience who needs to bring their sense of humor, their heart, and their own family memories to empathize with the lives of the unforgettable characters.
We were super-impressed with Jane Fonda's performance, and think this is her absolute best performance since she was in On Golden Pond. Her delivery and chemistry with her children set her apart, as well as her fearless commitment to portraying her character accurately! She was also featured recently on Whom You Know for being on the cover of Green published by the Princeton University Press. We loved meeting Jane Fonda and we love that she put a link to our article for the event we met her at on her website. You might not find an opening of a funeral such a delightful scene to start with, but hold on tight. We are glad to tell you though you will be on the verge of using your kleenex many times, you will start laughing so hard as you pull them out you will not be weepy-eyed. And maybe you'll need the tissue to capture what comes flying out your nose as your cry turns into a laughing convulsion. There are some shocking moments here!
While you are watching this brilliant flick, you'll wonder how many forms of awkward there are in this universe. You'll also discover that they are all best met with a good heaping dose of humor! The themes of family issues that arise in this movie are completely relatable to everyone that is part of humanity, whether you experience it with your genetic family or your adopted one.
The chemistry between the three brothers and sister is truly priceless, and is perhaps best played between Tina Fey and Jason Bateman. Cathartic roof-sitting moments can be the best with wine or with coffee. The reconnection for these siblings brings every color in the rainbow of emotions, and if you aren't laughing every other minute, check your pulse.
Previously, Tina Fey was featured as an author! However, now we love her best for her PRINCESS CUT.
The score was fantastic and specifically we loved the INXS Never Tear Us Apart inclusion.
Perhaps the best punctuation of humor was the young one potty training. Need we say more.
Everyone knows what it's like to go back to your hometown and wonder what your future could have been if you hadn't escaped and stayed. When you see some that stayed, you will be reminded of why you left!~! See above. However, some great surprises evolve as well and to follow up on our score comment, Cyndi Lauper music marks another memory that is a better one. Bring your ice skates. (and this moment reminds us of Serendipity!)
...if you have had one of those days that could not possibly be any worse, and then it outdoes itself, there are scenes in this movie that will make you want to jump up and hug the characters.
Though there are beaucoup de side-splitting moments, there are also some deeply philosophical ones as well. Are you playing it safe in your life or are you taking chances? Why?
These characters take a good hard look at reality, and the depth of characters is more real than ever, a credit to the screenwriters and the actors that delivered as ordered.
Director Shawn Levy states: "There was a beautiful modesty in the scale of the film, which I believe really comes across on screen. There was a feeling of bonding and family because we were all together under one roof making the movie. I'm so happy it worked out that way."
Producer Paula Weinstein adds: "I'd like to feel that people will come away from this movie with a smile, and maybe think, 'I'm just going to live my life and love my crazy family, and just go for it.'"
A final note-if you are from Maine, pay attention because this could be the best longest commercial for the state!!!!
The reality of this movie is the best part, and it's going to make you wish real life was just as laughable as this. Perhaps it will change your outlook!

The dramatic comedy “This is Where I Leave You” is directed by Shawn Levy, and based on the hilarious and poignant best-selling novel by Jonathan Tropper. It features a starring ensemble cast including Golden Globe winner Jason Bateman (“Arrested Development”); Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner Tina Fey (“30 Rock”); and two-time Oscar® winner, multiple Golden Globe honoree and 2013 Emmy Award nominee Jane Fonda (“Klute,” “Coming Home,” HBO’s “The Newsroom”).
When their father passes away, four grown siblings, bruised and banged up by their respective adult lives, are forced to return to their childhood home and live under the same roof together for a week, along with their over-sharing mother and an assortment of spouses, exes and might-have-beens. Confronting their history and the frayed states of their relationships among the people who know and love them best, they ultimately reconnect in hysterical and emotionally affecting ways amid the chaos, humor, heartache and redemption that only families can provide—driving us insane even as they remind us of our truest, and often best, selves.
