If you think YOU had a bad day, wait until you see this.  Foreign films lend such an international flavor to your viewing palate, and Sony is one of our favorite distribution studios for finding out what the rest of the world is up to in film.  Their latest and greatest makes its debut in a matter of days, and is highly dramatic with excellent acting.  Leviathan takes place in chilly Russia by the sea, desolate and quiet: about the furthest place from Manhattan we can imagine.  It's a bit of a vacation to watch it.

The quaint seaside town is absolutely picturesque and the sea itself could be a character, in all its majestic glory. The cinematography of the ocean alone is reason enough to watch Leviathan.

However, the beauty of the landscape is jolted by the plot: Kolya, the protagonist, is a handy man that lives in a house he built in a town that both his father and grandfather lived in.  The local mayor wants this property, and herein is the root of the problem.  If you thought lawsuits and politics were bad in America, wait until you see this!  It would be an understatement to say it's far worse.

The lawsuit becomes all consuming and on top of that, personal drama is layered into the script.  The creepiness and eerie quality of the mood show how shades of gray in corruption and intimidation can poison, and the drama is increasingly gripping as the movie evolves.   Even the clergy plays a part in the controversy.

The script is well-executed and we did watch the bonus footage where they perfected the sounds of the bird above and throwing the rock in the water: all interesting in cinematography.  The little things deliver big.

Leviathan's complexity, nuances and unique story that opens your mind to a larger world are reasons to see this movie.   But, we did like the ocean the best!  We can't get those views in Manhattan...
