Terminator is one of the most beloved franchises in Hollywood history, and Paramount Pictures has capitalized on its success by releasing a new modern classic opening to America starting July 1, 2015: Terminator Genisys! It is a brand-new standalone incarnation of this sci-fi saga that also runs high with emotion, thus capturing an audience far larger than the typical sci-fi crowd. The Terminator promised: "I'll be back" a full five years prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall, long before the realization of the full potential of computer-generated imagery. Peachy Deegan saw it today, and just loved it. It's pure entertainment at its best and the concept of man vs. machine could not be more relevant in today's age of the digital and social media revolution. However, it's important to discern: which is human and which is machine?
The liquid metal proves to be a most formidable foe in this well-cast saga...and when you die are you dead? Or just upgraded? And most importantly, can you really safeguard the future?
Quality non-stop action will capture your attention at every explosion, eruption and shot of a gun. If you are a sloucher at the theater like someone we know, you will be constantly sitting up a little bit straighter as you jump out of your seat and become catapulted into the action. Seeing this movie is an total escape and a mini-vacation in itself. Normally we are just not into action movies, but we are into THIS action movie.
What Terminator Genisys enjoys that the previous Terminators did not are the monumental advances in technology in moviemaking, which are best enjoyed in IMAX 3D. The battle sequences are riveting, especially when today's Terminator, also known as "Pops" is up versus himself from 1984. Arnold is of course much older but absolutely not obsolete! Did you know his films have grossed over $$3 billion worldwide? We loved his gigantic teddy bear prop going into the hospital...Pops's sentimentality is touching right down to the mementos he's saved of Sarah's past.
We just loved Emilia Clarke as Sarah Connor, and she just makes the movie. Her sharp acting in tandem with her killer stunts remind the world why Game of Thrones is such a big hit. We like seeing her natural brown hair and she nails the American accent; she epitomizes fierce. Emilia observes: "Alan [Director Alan Taylor] manages to get a beautiful marriage of old meets new, but also puts a very sensitive, intelligent spin on it. I think one of his goals with this movie is to ask what it is to be truly free as a human being, and the choices these characters have to make in deciding that. I think we are paying a lot of respect to the Terminator that has been before, and bringing it to this new audience today."
Millenials: Before seeing this do google T.J. Hooker and The Ramones. And do you know what a boom box is? And what you do with cassette tapes?
We understand this is the fifth Terminator movie of the franchise; we have not been advised as to whether there will be a sixth but we hope so. You don't need to be a sci-fi techy to love this: you just need to appreciate the fine art of moviemaking done well.
A final note: at 50 pages, the production notes were longer than any other by any studio in recent memory, possibly ever, further evidencing the illustrious accomplishments of those behind this upcoming blockbuster. We were delighted to read them in full.
