DID YOU SEE IT'S A WIN!
The most exciting team in all of New York just got more exciting yesterday!  NYCFC, which is as you know an expansion team, met up with Orlando at Yankee Stadium for their second face-off ever since the Florida team is also brand-new this year.  No side established dominance in the first half, however, as you can admire in the above video, David Villa hit one home right before the first half ended.

New York City FC has had growing pains over time, and as they integrate new players into the lineup it will take time to establish the level of consistency that both we, and Coach Kreis even more so, are looking for.  Now that we've been to multiple games, we can attest Coach Kreis's incredibly eloquent conferences after the game and his even-keel that we perceive, even though he has to be at least a little bit Rumplestilskin inside with the constant changes in level of play, consistency, team chemistry and execution that transpire.  He is definitely grace under pressure.  Everyone is giving 110% effort as individuals and as a team they need to polish the level of play to be more even.  We can see it in their eyes as they all answer all of our questions.  (Thank you!  Readers know by now who has a lot of questions all the time...)

You need to know how much progress they have made since we first started covering them in April, and a WIN is HUGE.  Calle, McNamara and Mix also scored and Villa, who carries the team, scored two.  Ultimately, New York City came out on top but we were nervous during the game and it was extremely close with nearly all the scoring coming in the second half.   Sometimes watching this team is like a box of chocolates; as Gump would say you never know what you're going to get.

Post-game, we said to Coach Kreis: "I think we're seeing a very different team now than we were in April and playoff contention is a huge possibility especially after where the win put NYCFC today.  Can you please talk about what your hopes could be if the playoffs happen and how NYCFC can close up huge gaps we see.  Sometimes it seems like we're watching two different teams; the first half and the second half were very different today."

Coach Kreis responded: "I would warn against the first part of your statement although I appreciate your confidence.  I still think this is a team that needs to improve every single week.  Just because we won this game and put ourselves I think above the playoff line for the moment doesn't mean we're a playoff contention team.  I still think we have a lot of improvements to make and at the end of the day we don't want to just be a playoff contention team: we want to be a MLS cup contention team.  The first level of that as you correctly identified is to make the playoffs.  We've got a lot of improvements to make.  I'm a fairly frustrated individual when we allow three goals again in our home stadium and I just don't think that we're managing the game the way we will need to to have any chance to make the playoffs."

In other comments, Coach said:
"What I saw was our team opening up, using every ounce of space out there and it makes a big difference with us...."

Someone asked what Coach Kreis would like to see improve in the back line.
Peachy laughed when he said, "How long do we have?"

Kreis continued: "I'm really excited about what we see in the attacking end of the field: some of the dynamic movements that result in goals/chances.  I'm very concerned [with the defense.] W have a lot of work to do.  We've got a lot of new players; we have three new defenders in our back four.  As of a month ago, none of those players were on our team."

P.S. Kreis says Frank Lampard should be ready for next week.  Should is the operative word of course and everyone wants him to be well enough, especially Frank.

We asked Tommy what he thought about the progress since April, and what further highlights we have to look forward to.
Tommy McNamara commented:  "I think we're a playoff contender right now.  The goal is to make the playoffs in the next couple of months.  We need to keep it moving; we obviously brought in the five new guys over the past couple of weeks.  I think they've integrated very well so far and we just need to continue with that and continue working hard."
Peachy: What do you need to literally do every game that's not happening yet?
Tommy: "We need to do a little bit better in keeping opponents off the scoreboard. In home games we've let in a lot of goals but fortunately we've been able to score a lot of goals as well in the process.  We need to lock down as a whole through the 11 players lock down more defensively."

This is our first time speaking to Angelino.  His English was great.  We asked him how his transition has been to New York City and what his hopes and goals were for this season.
Angelino said: "It's been great so far.  This is the first game I've won with the club and we're looking to get in the playoffs so [if we can continue to win] we'll make it."
Peachy: How does this team compare to other teams you've played on?
Angelino: "It's a bit more physical.  Obviously they are older and more experienced."
Peachy: Does anything surprise you about MLS?
Angelino: "Not yet.  Maybe the weather; it [can be quite hot.]"

Mix, who just made it back from the US National Team, said when we asked him to tell us the story of the goal he scored: "The goal was from hell to heaven in 30 seconds because [Orlando] almost scored.  We were freaking out, and suddenly we developed a counterattack.  I had a terrible pass to David.  (I heard everybody around me say 'No!') But the ball bounced and he managed to possess the 50/50 ball and Poku came around.  I kept on running because I knew they were more tired than I was and Poku was nice enough to get a great pass off to me so I owe him one now!"
Peachy: Can you please comment on how this team can achieve a higher level of consistency during the game?
Mix: "[Sigh.] That's the game of soccer.  You never know what you're going to get.  That's a tough question.  There's a lot of new players coming in now.  Over time, as players get to play together and understand each other it's going to be more consistent. The reactions and how people play off each other....we know that [we can reach] a high level of consistency; we just have to stop dropping off to the level where we don't play as well."
Peachy: You're playing a lot better than you were three months ago.  What are you proudest of?
Mix: "We're winning games!  The way we play and the way we win games.  We have amazing supporters and we hear them and it's exactly what we want in New York.  For me it's the best sport in the world and I love when people become a part of that.  Everybody wants to be involved with this club it feels like and people on the street stop me and tell us how proud they are and have the jerseys on.  That's what I'm used to in Europe and I love that this is becoming part of the culture [in New York]."

Mix has the one of the best interview deliveries and now that he's back from the National Team we hope you can say you have more colorful answers to look forward to!

We would have liked to have spoken to Pirlo but Peachy needs to grow another foot to be seen in the locker room crowd and we like to wait our turn.

NYCFC tells Whom You Know:

New York City FC took a big step in the right direction as the Club vies to qualify for the Major League Soccer playoffs in their inaugural season.

Captain David Villa scored twice, Javier Calle found the back of the net for the first time for the Club, and Tommy McNamara and Mix Diskerud helped seal all three points as New York City FC beat Orlando City SC 5-3 in front of 32,041 on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

New York City FC improve to 6-9-6 (24 points) and move up to seventh place in the Eastern Conference, while fellow expansion side Orlando City SC fall to 6-9-6 (24 points) and dropped to eighth.

"Yesterday four teams from our conference tied, so they missed out on two points," Villa said. "Today we beat Orlando, who is another one of our rivals. This victory helps us gain two points on teams vying for the playoffs and three against Orlando. Having won today is fantastic."

Said head coach Jason Kreis: "I’m really excited about what we’re seeing from the attacking end of the field. We have had so many dynamic moments we’re seeing around the goal creating scoring chances. That excites me."

Villa, who was recently named to the 2015 MLS All-Star Gameday roster, put the Club ahead right before halftime after a back-and-forth first half were neither team could seize momentum.

Angelino served up a pinpoint ball from midfield over the top to Villa in the box. The former Spain international showed deft control with his right foot despite having Sean St. Ledger draped over him. Villa created space, squared up and fired home his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

The visitors got one back following the interval.

Cyle Larin scored the first of his three goals on the day in the 50th minute to make it 1-1.

New York City FC needed just three minutes to regain the lead as Calle, who was making his first start since April 24, tapped in a teasing cross by McNamara from about 6 yards out to make it 2-1.

It was the Colombian’s first goal for the Club and in MLS.

"I’ve been working towards being able to play again and today was my chance," Calle said. "And now I have to continue trying to do the same to help the team make the playoffs. This is the second game I’ve played in this position and that’s the position where I’m closer to the goal and that I’m most familiar with. And I think I need to keep taking advantage of opportunities to keep scoring."

Larin, the first overall pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft, made it 2-2 with a tap-in of his own. Darwin Ceren ran onto a through ball down the left flank and sent a low cross into the box that Larin nailed home in the 61st minute.

Midfielder Andrea Pirlo made his New York City FC debut to a raucous ovation, replacing Mehdi Ballouchy in the 56th minute. The Italian maestro was instrumental in setting up the Club’s third goal in the 67th minute, spinning around a defender near midfield and passing the ball forward to Kwadwo Poku. Poku drove to the box and outmuscled Serando Carrasco before passing the ball to his Villa to his left. The forward cut inside to beat Aurelien Collin and proceeded to fire it to the far post as goalie Tally Hall was left rooted to the ground.

Villa has 12 goals this season and has scored six in the last four matches.

It was a lead the Club wouldn’t relinquish.

New York City FC added to their tally in similar fashion, but it was McNamara who found the back of the net this time. Pirlo again made a move in the midfield and found Poku. The Ghanaian darted forward and slid the ball to his left. McNamara, who had a ton of space, ran into the box and smashed home a left-footed effort to make it 4-2.

"It was great because I could tell that the fans wanted me to play," Pirlo said, referring to the "We Want Pirlo" chants throughout the first half. "When I got on the pitch, it was absolutely amazing to hear all of the applause. It was very emotional to hear and I really did appreciate it.

"I hope that I will continue to improve my game. I have only been training for three days at this point so I also need to feel more comfortable with my teammates and I am sure we will play well together.”

Orlando City SC made things interesting as Larin scored in the 85th minute off a pass from Kaka, cutting the home side’s lead to 4-3.

New York City FC sealed all three points on a lovely counter in stoppage time.

Orlando City SC threw men forward striving for the equalizer, but New York City FC broke off with a speedy counter as Villa, Poku and Mix teamed up with the American, who just returned from the 2015 Gold Cup, firing it home from close range.

New York City FC return to action on August 1 against Montreal. Kickoff is 2 p.m. ET from Yankee Stadium (YES Network, WFAN).
