"I had a 'Man from U.N.C.L.E.' model car. I believe you pressed the top off and it shot guns out of the sides. I might still have it."- Hugh Grant
Quick.
Hilarious.
Cutting.
Sharp.
Stylish.
All that, and even Hugh Grant, one of our most absolute favorites who completely steals the show here. Possessing PURE WIT, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. should be at the top of your priority list this weekend. Though we're the first to say how proud we are to be American and be politically independent, we're concurrently telling you how fabulous it is to be culturally colonized by the British and who loves that more than us? From Lotus Shoes (oldest brand in the world, in England) to the NYCFC (MCFC's latest), we aim to cover what you should know about from across the pond in addition to what is great in the USA and you absolutely need to know of the brilliance of Guy Ritchie's latest and greatest. We believe this is the first time we've reviewed his work.
This is absolutely for everyone that loved AMC's TURN -you must see that too:
and HBO's Strike Back http://www.whomyouknow.com/2015/07/strike-back-starring-philip-winchester.html#.VcuSRflVikp
What can we say but we TOLD YOU SPIES ARE HOT. And Miracle isn't the only Cold War movie we love now.
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is based on the 60's series, and pays homage to that period with a unique modern twist you'll enjoy seeing as it evolves. If you like to know what everything stands for like us, U.N.C.L.E. is United Network Command for Law and Enforcement.
Other than Hugh Grant, Henry Cavill as Napoleon Solo and Armie Hammer as Illya Kuryakin light up the screen as past enemies that are all of a sudden in the same boat of cooperative efforts.
"What we found so irresistible," says Ritchie, "was taking these polar-opposite agents and forcing them together so that they start out trying to annihilate each other and end up cooperating, but maybe still not entirely trusting each other. The story is largely the evolution of their collaboration. The fact that one represents capitalist America and the other represents communist Russia, and these two super powers have to team up to neutralize a threat with global stakes, is a great premise that you can have a lot of fun with, and that's really the spine of the story."
We loved Cavill in Man of Steel (reviewed) and were among few we believe who liked The Lone Ranger and gave it a good review, which starred Hammer. We can't remember the last time there were this many stars we previously liked all coming together for a new feature.
"It's a zone I fascinating, the way men interact with each other," says Ritchie, who directed, produced, and co-wrote "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." screenplay, based on the hit 1960's TV series of the same name. "Even going back to 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels,' I'm drawn to that male-to-male dynamic as kind of a genre unto itself."
We were so happy to see footage included of President Kennedy, which will remind you of our feature on The Monocle earlier today. You'll love Napoleon's enthusiasm for truffle risotto if you are also really interested in what your dinner is going to be...and Johnnie Walker Black has some great product placement here. And, you never know when you'll enjoy some Chianti and a sandwich...
Two thumbs up to Joanna Johnston, Costume Designer. The fashion made the movie and the graphic dresses we absolutely loved, as well as the sunglasses! You should know this is one of the most visually attractive movies we've seen in a long time. We also liked the telephone casting choices.
From the props standpoint, there's some real history used here. They use Pussy Galore's helicopter from Goldfinger, and also you should know that Ian Fleming is known to have contributed some thoughts to the television project in its early conceptual stages.
Alicia Vikander as Gaby was a showstopper throughout, and though she's had a great career so far, we her most memorable in this role. Up with female mechanics! (She recently wrapped "The Danish Girl" with Eddie Redmayne.) Alicia reminds us a bit of Penelope Cruz.
We were also impressed with the stellar music by Daniel Pemberton which we'd agree was simple and memorable, which is what they were aiming for. Finally, it's ubercool to know that the score was recorded in Studio 2 at Abbey Road, famous for recording The Beatles.
Some parting advice: beware of the kind of kisses given by the KGB.
For all of us that missed the 1960's, here's your chance to join in the fun.
And if you lived it, we are guessing you'd like to live it again...
The Man from U.N.C.L.E. is Highly Recommended by Whom You Know.
Henry Cavill (“Man of Steel”) stars as Napoleon Solo opposite Armie Hammer (“The Social Network”) as Illya Kuryakin in director Guy Ritchie’s action adventure “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” a fresh take on the hugely popular 1960s television series.
Set against the backdrop of the early 1960s, at the height of the Cold War, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” centers on CIA agent Solo and KGB agent Kuryakin. Forced to put aside longstanding hostilities, the two team up on a joint mission to stop a mysterious international criminal organization, which is bent on destabilizing the fragile balance of power through the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology. The duo’s only lead is the daughter of a vanished German scientist, who is the key to infiltrating the criminal organization, and they must race against time to find him and prevent a worldwide catastrophe.
“The Man from U.N.C.L.E” also stars Alicia Vikander (“Anna Karenina”), Elizabeth Debicki (“The Great Gatsby”), with Jared Harris (“Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows”), and Hugh Grant as Waverly.
The screenplay was written by Guy Ritchie & Lionel Wigram, who previously collaborated on re-imagining the classic detective Sherlock Holmes in two hit films.
