One of the most aesthetically pleasing movies you'll ever see is The Danish Girl, available for digital download starting tomorrow and recipient of four Oscar nominations.  Centered on a topic that was socially considered ahead of its time, The Danish Girl's greatest triumphs are  the acting of the absolutely stellar cast and the choices of the brilliant director-for those that put forth Oscar nominations, you forgot to add Tom Hooper to the list.  That was the biggest miss this year by far.  Hooper's vision is legendary and we believe it would be nice for him to add to his Oscar collection since his work exudes excellence.

From the picturesque landscapes to bustling Copenhagen of 1926, The Danish Girl's visually gorgeous settings are reason enough to watch this movie, especially when you add the incredible costumes that range from cocktail party attire for soirees to everyday looks of the era, which were equally laudable.  The architecture is another highly commendable aspect of The Danish Girl, and the angles and the impeccable lighting all culminate in earned nominations of Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.  If this film doesn't win both of those, we will be shocked and highly disappointed.  Many filmmakers could learn from the visual enchantment that The Danish Girl creates.  The calm boats at night were another powerful visual.

We don't often comment on movie music and it's only a coincidence that The Grammys are tonight- but the score really added an element to The Danish Girl that enhanced the drama and elevated intellectual aura.  The movie is true to the time period and the filmmakers were entirely committed to a color palette emphasizing dusty golden hues (you know, like an Oscar), rose tones and slate blue wonders, which is why we write in this color.  Also, we thought the hair of the Redmayne's and Schoenaerts's characters was absolutely perfect.

Of course, the story of The Danish Girl and its plot of finding yourself and being yourself is a highly modern thought, but one that is universal and human and not something that should be political or subject to a time period.  The multiple layers of the plot will draw in the audience in a topic and story that is both unique and beautiful.

In this story, Alicia Vikander's character plays the wife who quite literally loses her husband, and her commitment as an actor gave the part real authenticity and meaning with her shades of ennui delivered perfectly.  We would think difficult would be an understated word to employ should your spouse reveal such a truth (that maybe they should have revealed earlier.)  Eddie Redmayne is entirely convincing through this transformation and his superior acting talents are again a pleasure to watch.  (P.S. y
es, Eddie, you are pretty enough, and we will call you Lili.  Although our favorite personal Lilly is always Pulitzer.)

However, better than Vikander and Redmayne was Matthias Schoenaerts.  Schoenaerts has stellar stage presence and an amazing ability to morph into each character he takes on flawlessly.  Surely, there is a ton of work involved in this; he was last featured on Whom You Know in Rust and Bone and each time we see him we are sincerely tricked into realizing it is him; he is THAT GOOD.  We've also seen him in a lot that we have not officially reviewed.

The strong script that never deviates from the plot adds bones to this movie, but what we liked best were all the visuals which were delivered softly but in tandem felt like fireworks to our eyes.  Do not miss The Danish Girl, the latest and greatest triumph of TOM HOOPER!

In the 1920s, a strong and loving marriage evolves as Gerda Wegener (Vikander) supports Lili Elbe (Redmayne) during her journey as a transgender woman. Through the other, each of them finds the courage to be who they are at heart. “Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander are sensational!” declares Access Hollywood’s Scott Mantz, while Debruge of Variety raves, “Redmayne gives the greatest performance of his career.”

Also starring Ben Whishaw (Skyfall), Sebastian Koch (Homeland), Amber Heard (Zombieland), and Matthias Schoenaerts (Far from the Madding Crowd), The Danish Girl is a moving and sensitive portrait that Lou Lumenick of The New York Post calls “a remarkable and timely story.”
