A series that we've been enthusiastic about from its inception is Call the Midwife, and America, you should be sitting at the edge of your seat waiting for the April 3, 2016 Season Five debut at 8pm on PBS!  This beloved series evocative of the charm of a day gone by enters not only a new season but also a new decade: namely 1960's London.  It opens with the comforting, familiar voice of Vanessa Redgrave, a series signature.  For all those that came of age during this time, you'll also appreciate the music that accurately reflects the era.

Characters we already know and love return. Trixie Franklin, who's clearly the most fun, has become quite an evolved character showing her serious side as she dedicates herself to the balance of her AA meetings with exercise class and comes out with some great classic one-liners like "An elegant woman wears her clothes: they don't wear her" and "One must suffer to be beautiful."  Trixie also absolutely has the best outfits!  But remember they are midwives, not glamourpusses.  We are pro-glamourpuss!  We would be all about cavorting in combinations and we probably have recommended some in Fashion Alert at some stage.

As a show evolves generally speaking, particularly in this genre, we believe it is harder for it to remain of the caliber that it started with; if you look in our history of the Small Screen Scenes column you can see that although we may like a show’s inauguration, we may not continue to write on every season.  We were impressed with Call the Midwife from the start.

The Complete Original UK Season Two Earned Our Highest Recommendation:

The Complete Original UK Season Three Earned Our Highest Recommendation:

Of course, we like what we know the best across disciplines and if you thought we were excited about this show before, consider that we know someone in it now.
Mover and Shaker Chris Reilly stars as Bernie Mullucks and casting teamed him up with Liz White, as Rhoda Mullucks.  Both deliver excellent performances; they are confronted with a challenging situation as parents that both react to with paramount emotion.  This storyline is central to this episode as the Mullucks family faces the shock and challenge of having a child born with birth defects, of course, a lifelong physical trial that ultimately in life is determined by how one reacts to it.  Attitude is key and Bernie and Rhoda’s evolution of response to the birth of their child is incredibly touching.

We are also impressed with Shelagh Turner, who is master of diplomacy throughout this situation.  Shelagh knows exactly what to say and how to say it: she has the best delivery of lines.  Oleg, how do you like Shelagh’s glasses? And Trixie’s sunglasses at the conclusion?

Of course, we miss Jenny and Chummy but the new characters give the series a needed breath of fresh air and an elevated sense of interest and color to the cast.  This is how series that start off with a bang continue to stay on top.

For every ancient reading, the dinners at Nonnatus House are going to bring you back to memories of sit-down dinners Tuesdays and Thursdays at Miss Porter’s, except this doesn’t have the Perilhettes and we didn’t have nuns.

Season Five Episode One Airing on PBS in the USA April 3, 2016 has earned our Highest Recommendation.

Stay tuned for our first feature in Red Carpet Cuisine, where we will suggest what you might eat when you watch this so do your exercise class first with Trixie (clue: it’s by a Manhattan family business that has been killing it since the 19th century).
