It's not who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW and now we know Billy Wall.
We are thrilled to tell you about our first visit to Saluggi's!
We had a good feeling about this venue when the staff was uberfriendly and from the opening dish, they were attentive to detail, as in putting the dressing on the side for Ms. Pretty Picky here.
We literally were just downtown checking out America's Cup in the press conference, and as we once worked down there, we can tell you first hand there are not many great pizza places in Southern Manhattan.  You'd better believe Saluggi's is one.
As avid readers know, we always order a green salad.
We began with the House Salad, which was phenomenally fresh. The House Salad is comprised of mixed greens, red onions, and tomatoes and topped with our friend, parmesan.
The House Vinaigrette, which we liked, is made fresh on premises and you can choose to add chicken or shrimp.  Shrimp brightened up this dish even more and it arrives fresh from Hunt's Point and is seared to perfection.  Every component was sliced just right.  This is no ordinary spot; the quality of the food is amazing.
The appetizer that called out our name the loudest were the mini-meatballs.  Served in homemade marinara and topped with parmesan cheese, they are 100% beef and no one will be asking where it is like that woman in the commercials.  Extremely flavorful and of fabulous consistency, you will happily munch on these meatballs!  They did not last long and we loved them!  We understand they are derived from a family recipe.
So why is it called Saluggi's and not Billy's or Wall's?
These are the kind of things we want to know too, and the answer is quintessential New York!
Billy Wall grew up in Inwood, and in 1950's New York, we are told, there was a game similar to "Keep Away" called Saluggi.  The venue, the food and Billy are just as much fun as the game, we imagine, although you know who plays on Twitter a lot more.  For our pasta course, Saluggi's Penne alla Vodka struck a chord in our appetite!  Succulent tomato cream vodka dances with penne and parmesan to wow your tastebud world!  We like how you have lots of choices at Saluggi's; with this dish you can add broccoli, chicken, mini-meatballs or shrimp.  We chose chicken and it made it even better!
Bien sur mes amis, the piece de resistance at Saluggi's is without a doubt the pizza, despite the superb quality of the other dishes.  You may create your own brick-oven pizza, or choose from over a dozen choices of their specialty pies that they craft just for you.  We opted for the vegetarian, and added to it and asked them to not include the black olives, although if you like black olives certainly you will like the black olives here.
The Vegetarian is a symphony of mixed mushrooms, roasted peppers, red onions, sun-dried tomatoes, red sauce and FRESH mozzarella that they make fresh daily.  Yes, the chef makes the mozzarella fresh on premises.  We added garlic and fresh spinach and from the crisp, fresh crust to the phenomenal quality of each component this pizza added up to huge success.  Don't "Keep Away" go visit Billy and keep this pizza front and center in your mind when you are downtown and hungry!
Saluggi's is Terrific Takeout!
We look forward to seeing what develops next...Billy has some brilliant ideas coming!
They include a second location to be opened soon!
