As you know, a girl should be two things: classy and fabulous!
The illustrations in this book are exactly that, and you need this one to add to your collection for the illustrations. Author Megan Hess proves her drawing ability backs up her illustrious resume with every turn of the page, for over 200 of them. Her interpretive style of Coco Chanel, the brand and the legacy populate the story line. Megan's biography at the end of the book is indeed impressive and it includes Dior among her clients; for Dior we absolutely love Mover and Shaker Bil Donovan (also seen at Mover and Shaker Suelyn and Julien Farel's).
Previously on Whom You Know, we have reviewed:
and even did a children's book:
In terms of the story line, we did not learn anything we hadn't yet read in this book. The pictures dominate the pages and the text supports the pictures. We really wanted to like the story, however, the cardinal sin of grammar is committed on page 108; next time Megan, you should hire Peachy as your proofreader. It's never who you know, it's WHOM YOU KNOW but maybe you don't know Rennie? We believe we spied some comma splices and would have added colons and semi colons in some spots.
If you feel like you've read everything on Chanel before, you've never seen it drawn this way.
Megan Hess's Coco Chanel is an artistic wonder to behold.
"In order to be irreplaceable, one must always be different" - Coco Chanel
Fashion is ever-changing, influenced by the key designers that capture a moment in history; and Coco Chanel is arguably the most significant influence on women's fashion in the twentieth century. Coco Chanel: The Illustrated World of a Fashion Icon is a compilation of Megan Hess' stunning illustrations of the 100 most quintessential moments through Chanel's history, from Coco's incredible life, to the impact of Karl Lagerfeld and the incredible items that have become fashion icons - the little black dress, the luxurious bags and accessories, glamorous jewellery and of course the renowned Chanel No 5 perfume.
Interspersed with historical anecdotes and famous quotes from Coco herself, Karl Lagerfeld and other key fashion icons of the era, this book is an elegant and immersive introduction to the moments that shaped Coco and the iconic Chanel brand - and how fashion, in turn, shaped their lives.
Megan Hess is an international fashion illustrator who works with some of the most prestigious fashion designers and luxury brands around the world, such as Chanel, Dior, Cartier, Montblanc and Tiffany and Co. This is Megan's third book following Fashion House and her latest stunning collection The Dress.
