Mover and Shaker Rita Cosby

Rita Cosby was first featured as a Mover and Shaker in 2011:

Since May of 2011, Rita Cosby‘s book about her father, QUIET HERO, became a New York Times Best Seller which is no surprise to us as we loved it so much we reviewed it twice. It remains the only book we have ever reviewed more than once in our dozen-year history.
She was deeply grateful to be able to share this news with her father Richard Cosby who sadly passed away soon after in 2012, and was posthumously awarded with one of Poland’s highest honors, the Polonia Restituta, for his courage in World War II.

Rita Cosby continues to highlight her father’s legacy, as well as spotlight the unwavering heroism of Polish and American troops, through countless broadcast interviews, speaking at major events all over the world, and in 2019, Rita was heralded at The White House, and also honored at The Royal Palace in Warsaw, Poland, decorated with one of the country’s highest civilian honors for her work recognizing Poland and its veterans.

In 2014, she joined WABC Radio. She has received six prestigious Gracie awards for her work in radio, including for Outstanding Host and Outstanding Talk Show.

In June 2014, she was the first American journalist to interview Pope Francis when she talked to him at the Vatican about his historic Mideast Peace Summit. She was able to conduct the interview entirely in Spanish, as she lived in Seville, Spain during her college studies abroad. In 2018, she was selected as female Legend of the Year by Radio Ink Magazine, chosen among all women on and off air in the radio industry. She currently hosts “The Rita Cosby Show” in primetime, 10pm to Midnight EST, where she interviews major newsmakers from all over the world.

Since 2011, Rita served as a frequent guest host on HLN/CNN and continues to do TV Specials for the network to this day. She is also frequently interviewed on numerous networks for her exclusive interviews and other current events. As an Emmy-winning TV host who has interviewed more than 20 world leaders, including seven US Presidents, she is constantly asked to give her valuable insight and perspective on major news events covered on TV, radio and elsewhere.

Since 2019, Rita has also been Chair of The Global Service Institute at Long Island University. This groundbreaking initiative teaches young and old how to get involved in various levels of volunteerism. Additionally, under here guidance the Institute created the innovative and much-needed Global Service App. This global app is believed to be the first of its kind tied to an educational institution.

Rita has also been co-hosting Troopathon for about ten years. To date, they have raised well over $8 million to send care packages to our nation’s active duty troops in harm’s way based all around the globe.

She also played a pivotal role in recognizing the unsung heroes of WWII, The Merchant Marines, who will now soon be accorded Congressional Gold Medals for their critical efforts in the war’s success.

Since Rita's Mover and Shaker Interview with Whom You Know in May 2011, she was given a special honor a few months later. Wherein because of her “extraordinary journalism and exemplary service on behalf of her community,” October 11, 2010, was officially named Rita Cosby Day in The State of New York.  We are absolutely thrilled to present our newest interview with Rita Cosby!  Peachy Deegan interviewed Rita for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: You are one of our most if not the most favorite patriot of Peachy’s favorite patriots.
What does the USA mean to you and why?
Rita Cosby: It represents freedom, hope and opportunity. America literally saved my father in World War II and has often saved the world in pivotal moments throughout history.

What should everyone know about your dad, Richard Cosby?
He was a deeply proud Polish freedom fighter who loved America and his homeland beyond words.

What is going to The White House like?
It’s always exciting, majestic and an honor.

What was it like to meet and interview Pope Francis?
Unforgettable, as I could clearly see his heart and spirit resonate his love of God and man profoundly.

What should everyone know about Pope Francis that they might not know?
He is not as well-versed in English as some other Popes, so when I spoke to him in Spanish, his native tongue, he deeply appreciated that and had a big smile on his face.

How does your Catholicism influence your life and career?
My faith always guides my life’s mission and how I treat others.

America has changed quite a bit since we met you over a decade ago.  How would you characterize this change and how do you work to make America better?
Sadly, America has become more divisive and tumultuous. Through my broadcast work, I try to cover many sides of the story, as well as spotlight heroes who make this country great.

Why do people criticize those that are proud of being American and how can the USA as a country work to become more unified?
I think we should always be proud of this great country and try to work together where we can find common ground for the good of the nation and the world.

Have you interviewed President Biden and if so what was that like?
Yes, the last time was several years ago and he was friendly and spirited.

Please comment on all of the Presidents of the USA you have interviewed.
All of them are so different, but it is always a privilege to speak to the leader of the free world.

What world leaders outside the USA impress you most today and why?
President Duda of Poland as he is doing a great job of highlighting Poland’s courageous past and positioning it well for the future. Also King Abdullah of Jordan, who has truly been a peacemaker in a very difficult neighborhood.

How would you characterize the fairness of the media today and how can an educated citizen acquire real news as opposed to news that is completely biased?
Today, everyone should make sure to look at several news sources to gain a variety of perspectives. As many in the media have become incredibly biased, and often not as balanced as they truly should be.

Peachy herself has lost about 25k followers on Twitter due to censorship and sometimes is edited and silenced by social media platforms: this is a widespread problem. What do you think the USA as a country should do to address this?
I’m a big supporter of The First Amendment, and I believe both Republicans and Democrats should stand together and speak out against this.

What do you feel President Trump’s greatest successes were and his greatest challenges?
Expediting the vaccines and creating a strong economy were among his greatest successes. Among his challenges, large divisions within his own political party and within the country.

Will you ever run for office?
No. But I might run away from it! I prefer to cover politicians from the outside.

What kind of ticket do you think we’ll see in both 2022 and 2024?
We’ll see many heated political races for Congress in 2022. The results of 2022 will certainly play a big role in shaping the Presidential Race in 2024. It’s too early to make predictions on either.

You are equally proud of your Polish heritage. What should everyone know about Poland and how do you connect with your culture there?
Poles share a great love of America and the values of freedom. Each and every time I visit Poland, I see a country that is blossoming with arts and culture and tremendous Polish pride. Needless to say, I think of my beloved late father as I walk the streets there where he and his comrades tirelessly fought.

What do you love about WABC Radio?
WABC’s iconic, storied history and its tremendous impact on our great listening audience all across the nation.

We have enjoyed John Cats’s company with you; what should everyone know about him that they might not know?
John is incredibly devoted to New York, our country and his beautiful family. He is a tremendous role model and human being.

How can we restore safety to New York City?
By getting out to vote and making sure criminals are being held responsible for crimes they have committed. Stop the revolving door of justice.

What do you like best about Manhattan and what would you like to see change?
Manhattan is the greatest city in the world. Everything is here for you to experience and attain your dreams.
Sadly, the quality of life throughout the city has diminished in recent years with rising crime and the economy with the pandemic. It’s time the city that never sleeps, wakes up and becomes the top destination for residents and tourists again.

What do you love about being on the radio?
My relationship with my loyal listeners, as I frequently take their calls during my action-packed show. I love listening and learning from them on the biggest stories of the day.

How do you so successfully connect with your radio listeners?
By talking about topics they passionately care about and sharing my own views in an honest, common sense way. I’m described as feisty and fair… I love that.

In our last interview you said you aspire to interview Queen Elizabeth. If you had the opportunity to interview her, where would you want to do it, what would you wear and what would you ask her?
After doing a curtsy at Kensington Palace, and greeting her in my elegant dress, I’d ask her the inside scoop on all the world leaders she has met. Queen Elizabeth’s remarkable life is a walking testament to history.

Will you write more books and if so what will they be about?
I probably will as I love writing and sharing the journey with others. As to what journey I’ll write about next, I’m not sure as I always have a lot to say and share.

Have you met any penguins since our last interview? You had said you’d like to do a live show from the South Pole.
Sadly, I have not, especially since there hasn’t been a lot of travel recently due to the pandemic. But I hope to see my adorable penguins soon!

What honors and awards have you received in your profession and do you have a trophy case?
I have several Emmys and Gracies among other awards. No trophy case yet, but very proud of all of them.

What one word best describes you and why?
Fearless. As I am afraid not to try, rather than try and even possibly fail. Most importantly, no regrets.

What do you take your sense of identity from?
A mission of life and purpose, and my gutsy family heritage.

What is your favorite place to be in Manhattan?
I have so many that I love, including the energy of Times Square, the tranquility of Central Park and the extraordinary views of the Statue of Liberty from Battery Park.

What is your favorite shop in Manhattan?
The one with the best sale… as I love a good bargain.

If you could hire anybody who would it be and why?
Since I know my own strengths and weaknesses, I would hire myself... But I can’t afford me.

What is the best advice you’ve received in your career and what mentors have influenced you the most?
I received tremendous advice from legendary journalist Diane Sawyer early on in my career, including her telling me to catch sleep whenever you can, because sleep is tough to find when you’re covering breaking news around the globe. Unfortunately, I’m still working on following that advice much better.

What is your favorite drink to drink five in a row as you had said the 5th is your favorite? Thank you for imbibing with Peachy during the last decade in person.
These days I’ve been so busy, all five drinks are usually water... and I’m really missing my favorite pink champagne.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you at a cocktail party?
Being the only one who could speak English, so I had to communicate with creative hand signals. It still turned out to be a pretty good party!

What is your favorite restaurant in Manhattan?
These days, because of the lingering pandemic, the ones that are open and serving.

What is your favorite Manhattan book or favorite character in Manhattan literature?
Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

What is your favorite TV show and why?
The one I’m on that day.

What is your favorite movie and why?
I love action movies, like “Taken” with Liam Neeson or “Olympus Has Fallen” with Gerard Butler.

What do you know now that you wish you knew at the beginning of your career?
To enjoy the ride and treasure the moments.

Who would you like to be for a day and why?
A person without a schedule... Since that’s never happened.

What would you like to be asked in an interview that you never have been asked, and how would you answer it?
How was your journey to outer space? I would love to be able to answer that... So that’s on my bucket list.

If you could have anything in Manhattan named after you what would it be and why?
I’ve had a “Rita Reuben” sandwich and a “Rita Cosby Day” named after me... But I’ve never had a “Rita Road”… Hopefully with a high speed lane.

What has been your best Manhattan athletic experience?
Grabbing a cab at rush hour!

What is your favorite thing to do in Manhattan that you can do nowhere else?
Watch a great show, enjoy a world class dinner and go for a special dessert... all after midnight.

If you could have dinner with any person living or passed, who would it be and why?
I have to pick at least two, Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela, as I never had the honor to meet either of these giants who epitomize courage and were steadfast in their beliefs and actions.

What has been your best Manhattan art or music experience?
I was blessed to be asked to host the largest Polish music concert in Central Park. To view from the stage that beautiful sea of Polish and American flags was truly a sight to behold and brought tears to my eyes.

What do you personally do or what have you done to give back to the world?
I try to help as many good charitable causes as possible, and I am deeply proud to now also be the Chair of the Global Service Institute at LIU, which is a game-changing initiative, creating a modern day Peace Corps. Being able to inspire future generations towards service is extremely gratifying.

What do you think is most underrated and overrated in Manhattan?
The most underrated is a free parking space... and the most overated and overpriced is parking in Midtown on a weekday.

Other than Movers and Shakers of course, what is your favorite WhomYouKnow.com column and what do you like about it?
I love the Made in America and Patriotic Peachy segments. I also enjoy the movie and restaurant reviews which tell me what to explore and what to avoid.

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
There's always more to come... Stay Tuned.

Since closing The Tony-Winning production of "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder" in January of 2016 after nearly 700 performances in the Title role and taking a hiatus to perform in "The Heidi Chronicles", Tony-nominee Bryce Pinkham has focused his efforts on taking strides in the world of television and film. Bryce Pinkham was first featured as a Mover and Shaker on Whom You Know in 2013 and has previously been Highly Recommended by Whom You Know in Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson, Ghost, and Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder

In March Bryce accepted a small role in Robert DeNiro's upcoming film "The Comedian" and spent two days on set with Robert DeNiro, Harvey Keitel and Leslie Mann. In April Bryce was offered a featured role in a musical episode of Baz Lurman's THE GET DOWN which premieres on Netflix in the fall. In the episode both Bryce and Hamilton's Tony winning Renee Elise Goldberry perform original songs written for them by Baz and his team.

In May, Bryce was offered his first series regular role, joining the cast of PBS' Mercy St for their second season. On the Civil War Drama, Bryce will play Major Clayton McBurney III, the new Union Army chief surgeon at Mansion House. He joins a cast that includes Josh Radnor (How I Met Your Mother), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane), Norbert Leo Butz (Bloodline) and Patina Miller (The Hunger Games).

In September Bryce will return to Broadway, leading the company of Roundabout Theater's Holiday Inn, a new adaptation of the Irving Berlin musical made famous by Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. Singing songs like "White Christmas" and "Blue Skies", Bryce will bring his Grammy nominated voice back to The Great White Way just in time for the holidays! We are absolutely thrilled to present Mover and Shaker Bryce Pinkham as our latest Red Carpet Regular and are proud to say we have reviewed every show he's been in. Peachy Deegan interviewed Bryce for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan:
We think you are phenomenally talented. Why did it take the Tony awards 3 shows to finally nominate you for a Tony (you were also great in Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson and Ghost but sadly we have no vote) and what do you think was different about your performance in Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder that convinced them of your Tony nomination as opposed to your previous two performances?
Bryce Pinkham:
I try not to care too much about awards. If you are performing to get awards your motivation train is going to run out of steam real fast. I want to be one of those actors that gets a life-time achievement award because people can’t believe I’m still around.

What did you like best about being in Gentlemen’s Guide and what did you enjoy about being Monty the most and why?
I most enjoyed making people laugh. Our world is a difficult place. Getting the chance to bring joy and laughter to people for a few hours is a great privilege; you feel like you’re helping people survive. I enjoyed playing Monty because he is an underdog with everything going against him. Who doesn’t like rooting for an underdog?

How does a show that you were in earning a Tony affect your marketability as an actor and what are the literal effects so far?
I’m not really sure, I guess that would be a question for people are considering hiring me, but I know that it has affected my confidence as an actor. The voice in my head that has always told me I could successfully lead a show on Broadway was finally proven right. The result of that is that now I can go tell that other really unhelpful, insidious voice we all have in our head who wants to sabotage every good thing in our path to kindly shut the hell up. In terms of work, I have definitely felt like more opportunity has come my way, but “opportunity” doesn’t get you the job, you have to get you the job. So, in many ways, I have forced myself to work even harder on auditions, etc. since Gentleman’s Guide.

What should the world know about “The Comedian”, when does it come out, who do you play and what studio is distributing it?
I think it is scheduled to come out in January of 2017. I play a Devon O’Donnor, a regional theater actor who has standing gig singing show tunes at a retirement home in Florida. I don’t know which studio is distributing it.

Please tell us what it is like to work with Robert DeNiro. We met him at a charity event once or twice with his wife Grace and found him to be really personable.
Mr. DeNiro was very kind to me and everyone on set. For someone so revered in his field he really just felt like one of the team on the days I was there. He insisted everyone just call him “Bob,” I found him very generous, but he also took his work very seriously; he was very intent to make a really funny movie. I can’t wait to see it.

What makes DeNiro funny and what makes you funny?
I don’t know. I don’t like defining why something or someone is funny, because the more you try and figure it out, the less funny it is sometimes. Truly uncontrollable laughter doesn’t come from our brain, it comes from our gut and it’s that laugh that matters most to me. I love being caught off-guard by how funny something is, and if I try and plan something “funny” it never works. If you’re laughing, I’m just gonna try and keep doing whatever it is that got you there.

Is there anything unfunny about “The Comedian”?
I haven’t seen it yet, but as anyone who has looked into the world of stand-up comedy knows, there are some pretty dark corners if you know where to look.

Please tell us about “The Get Down.”
It’s a series that will come out on Netflix sometime in the fall. It’s description is “a rag tag group of teenagers run wild in the streets of the Bronx.” Baz Lurman is the creative force behind the show, so you know there will be music and dancing, and some amazing cinematography.

Recently, Peachy was in Old Town, Alexandria, Virginia eating an ice cream cone by the fountain near Gadsby’s Tavern and she saw a big poster for Mercy Street and screamed “My friend Bryce is in this!” Have you been to Old Town and do you film anything there?
I filmed most of my scenes on the hospital set which is in Richmond, so I have not been out to Old Town yet. I have to say though, that Richmond is an amazing town with delicious restaurants. I haven’t had a bad meal since I’ve been here.

What do you know about being a surgeon and did you study surgery to prepare for your Mercy Street role?
I know nothing about being a surgeon, in part because I get a bit squeamish around blood and things of that nature, so I have stayed away from such knowledge in my real life. Thankfully, my character is not performing any surgeries on the show, he is more of the administrative head of the hospital.

What do you like most about Mercy Street?
That American History is being looked at by a large viewing audience. That PBS decided there was a need for a Civil War show whose heroes were women and African American. That the show confronts issues of race and gender in ways that resonate with the issues we are facing today. I’m proud to be a part of anything that feels like it keeps the difficult conversations going.

We like that Mercy Street is about American History and we are extremely patriotic. Are you patriotic and what characterizes your patriotism?
That’s a difficult question. I love that Mercy Street is about American History too because it reminds us that, in the words of Lin Manuel Miranda, “History had its eyes on you.” I think that’s a really important reminder to all of us at this stage in our country’s history. I find it difficult to be a proud American lately. I’m quite frankly embarrassed by our politics, by our wealth inequality, our bigotry, our lack of education and our lack of ability to do anything about our country’s gun violence epidemic. Revisiting other crucial moments in our country’s history is important because it reminds us that one day the choices we make in these moments will be reflected on by those who come after us. I suppose my brand of patriotism is the kind that takes pride in our freedom to express our opinions and our freedom to have rational debate constructive debate, though lately I have felt like those two things are at odds.

How would you compare and contrast the role patriotism plays in Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson and Mercy Street?
Bloody Bloody was political satire, it used humor and almost cartoonish characters to point out the ridiculous nature of Andrew Jackson’s Presidency. Sometimes heightened satire is the only way people can confront huge historical moral conundrums like the Trail of Tears; I think that is why South Park and The Book of Mormon are so successful: they exploit satire so beautifully. So, BBAJ utilizes patriotism by satirizing it. Mercy Street is not comedy, it’s drama that asks the viewer to look at the cost of war through the eyes of those who care for the wounded. The Nurses of Mercy Street don’t see Blue or Gray, they only know that they want to heal everyone. Seeing war or conflict from that perspective humanizes both sides. I think the most powerful thing we can do to end conflict is to radically humanize the opposition, try and understand their position. Mercy Street utilizes patriotism by dividing it and dismantling it. I think patriotism can shield us from growth and when it’s called into question (as it was in the Civil war when the very country one was patriotic about suddenly also became ‘the enemy’) it forced our country to grow.

We cannot wait to see “Holiday Inn” – when do you think that will come out and when you sing “Blue Skies” and “White Christmas” do you channel your inner Bing and what kind of style emerges?
Holiday Inn opens in the first week of October. I don’t think anyone is wise to try and impersonate Bing Crosby, because no one sounds like Bing Crosby. I am planning on giving my own take on the character and letting his life and desires and wishes influence the way he sings. I do think that the reason Bing was so great in the role is because he loved to sing the songs. I hope the joy of Berlin’s music will play a big part in helping me find my version of the character’s voice.

Do you feel like the Energizer Bunny after 700 performances of the show? What do you do to stay focused and healthy for the duration and does it feel a bit “Groundhog-day-ish” after a certain number of performances?
Yes, the job of keeping a performance active and alive after that long is a much different job than opening a show. It’s a lot like a relationship, you have to learn how to reinvest in it every time you go out there. To stay healthy I try and limit my alcohol intake, I don’t eat too much sugar and I let myself be selfish in how much sleep I get.

Would you ever want to work in Europe on screen or on stage and if so where and on what with whom?
Absolutely, I’d love to film a movie in Europe with all my favorite European actors. It would be set in Lake Cuomo, a 1940’s mystery, with Sir Ian McKellan, Mark Rylance, Marion Cotillard and Christoph Waltz.

You said your dad was a huge influence on your acting; did you celebrate Father’s Day together, is he co-starring with you on anything upcoming yet and what do you love the most about your dad today?
My Dad doesn’t act anymore, but I’d love to come up with a reason to get onstage together again. He and my Mom came to visit the set of Mercy Street close to Father’s Day, so that counts I guess. The thing I love most about my Dad is his generosity. He will stay up all night building the sets so his high school students can have them ready for Opening Night of the Musical. He doesn’t get paid to build the sets, he just does it because he loves it.

What should everyone know about California and San Francisco in particular?
That it’s a place you should see before you die. It’s a city unlike any other. It feels like it’s perched on the edge of the world... and the Crab is really good.

How would you assess your team, the San Francisco Giants, since your last Whom You Know interview in 2013 and if you were in charge of them how would they be different?
I’d say over the past 5 years they have been the most decorated team in baseball. They’ve won three championships since 2010 and have grinded out each one. I admire their winning spirit and their beards.

What would you like to do professionally that you have not yet had the opportunity to do?
I’d like to write my own show.

Have you hired Daniel Day Lewis yet and if no, why not?
No, haven't heard back from DDL's people yet, I suspect he's in space training for his next role as an alien.

What do you take your sense of identity from?
My actions.

If you could have dinner with any person living or passed, who would it be and why?
The Buddha. I think he could help me stop worrying so much.

When (not if) you win a Tony, when can we expect to see The Bryce Pinkham footbridge complete, where would it start and end, and what brands would you like to sponsor it?
The footbridge is caught up in a lot of red tape right now, but we're working on securing Starbucks as a sponsor; they feel like they don't have enough locations in Manhattan
 yet.

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
I have a charity that supports at-risk middle schoolers in Madagascar by using theater as a tool of empowerment. They should visit our website and make a donation so I can help the 45 kids in our program graduate middle school. www.zaraaina.org

A cult favorite is the cozy, a flat with lavender-scent infused soles adding style and fragrance to collector's closets as Paul's designs emerge in sophisticated design incarnations season after season in the most incredible hues, textures and modern innovations in luxury footwear because we know firsthand how incredibly brilliant he is. Mayer founded the brand in 2004 with partner, Jeff Levy. All shoes in the line are manufactured in Spain’s Valencia region, along the Mediterranean coast by a skilled staff of 12 artisans. They craft each pair of shoes with an old-world attention to detail that includes in-house embroidery, quilting and stitching as well as custom tanned leather. This allows the brand to cater to each retailer’s specific demands in with timely and consistent alacrity, with orders completed in an unheard-of 3 to 5 weeks. When not in New York, Paul can be found traveling to his myriad of stores across the country meeting his loyal clientele or vacationing in his favorite spot, the Royal Hawaiian on Waikiki Beach.

When Peachy Deegan last caught up with Mover and Shaker Baya Voce in 2009, she was DJing her heart out in NYC and looking for suitors along the way. In her search, she watched people attempt to date and fail, never getting past date number one.

Since then she has been studying the psychology of love and has started her own dating company, AmberMay (www.ambermaydate.com), which within its first two years of business has become Salt Lake City's premier matchmaking and dating company.

She specializes in matchmaking and being a "date doctor", giving people lessons on how to make their way through the first stages of dating. "Navigating your way through the beginning of a 'could-be' relationship is extremely hard. This phase is so vulnerable and sensitive that one wrong move could ruin your chance of moving forward", she says. "I pride myself if giving my clients simple steps to make sure they avoid any wrong turns along the way to a happy and (hopefully) lasting relationship".

Although she still DJs, (her most recent notable gig was DJing the 2013 Whitehouse Correspondents kickoff party), she's found that film has become another creative outlet for her to shine as well. Currently finishing a script she wrote loosely based off of life after MTV's The Real World, she is extremely excited about getting the film into production (and looking for funding if anyone wants to hop on the train!). In the last year she has produced an award winning commercial through the Utah Film Commission in conjunction with the Sundance Film Festival and has been the assistant to the producers and production coordinator on films for both Universal and Lifetime. She looks forward to helping people find love and making plenty of movies in 2014.   We are thrilled to present the multi-talented Baya Voce as our latest Red Carpet Regular.  Peachy Deegan interviewed Baya for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan: What are the biggest mistakes people make when dating?
Baya Voce: Talking about themselves and not being inquisitive on dates is huge. My biggest piece of advice is to ask lots questions on a first date. People love talking about themselves - let them!

What indicates compatibility to you?
It all depends on the people. Sometimes it can be because they come from similar backgrounds. Other times it can be that they share the same values. I think what often gets disregarded is whether or not you and the other person have common goals. This can be overlooked with the initial attraction taking over.

What is the hottest music right now that you play as a DJ?
Hhhmmmm.... well I just played a country wedding so the hottest tracks were probably by Garth Brooks! If it's a club, any electro remixes are huge on the west coast, but hip hop and old school remixes is all people want to hear when I DJ out east!

Can you name your top 5 songs of the moment and who the artist is?
Oh boy..... this one is hard!! Let me leave you with this sentiment. A little bird once said "my taste in music ranges from you need to hear this to please don't judge me, but...."

What was it like to DJ the White House Correspendents party?
It was SO much fun! It was a kickoff event thrown by a charity organization trying to get youth more politically involved. Totally star studded and amazing. And my dress was HOTTTT!

What are your best memories of being on MTV's Real World and do you stay in touch with them?
My best memories were probably bonding with all of the girls. I thought going into it that I was going to be the outcast with a bunch of hotties and then... me. Instead, I got cast with the most diverse group of ladies I could have asked for. I'm in touch with all of the girls and want to schedule a reunion for us all asap.

Can you tell us about your script and do you have a website for it?
It's a coming of age story about a girl finding her way (if that doesn't sound familiar, I don't know what does!) It's Girls meets The Graduation.

What should the world know about Salt Lake City and Utah?
We have the most AMAZING hot springs and Sundance to boot.... plus all the rivers, mountains and all the exploring you could want, all in the same state!

What or who has had the most influence on your pursuit of excellence?
I'm propelled by my need to feel significant to myself, in my own little bubble. That is my influence.

What are you proudest of and why?
I'm lucky enough to have a lot to be proud of. Right now I'm most proud of finishing my script and putting it into production.

What would you like to do professionally that you have not yet had the opportunity to do?
WRITE A BOOK! I'm always writing.... one day my chicken scratch will be on shelves :).

What honors and awards have you received in your profession?
Most recently I won a Creative Concept Award for producing a commercial for the Utah Film Commission in conjunction with The Sundance Film Festival.

What one word best describes you and why?
Fierce!

What do you take your sense of identity from?
I have lots of people I pull from. I once read a quote saying you're the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. I pick and choose carefully and hopefully I've created enough of my own identity to inspire other people too.

What is your favorite place to be in Manhattan?
Lower East Side.... it's where I lived so it has a special place in my heart.

If you could hire anybody who would it be and why?
Lena Dunham. Because that b*tch is hilarious.

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you at a cocktail party?
One time I was at this cocktail party with a pole in the middle of the room. People were dancing on it all night and it was a ton of fun. Next thing you know, someone jumps onto it and BAM! the pole comes off the wall and falls onto this really nice piece of art. The art and the person survived, and it's a story my friends all still laugh about today.

What is your favorite restaurant in Manhattan?
Beauty & Essex! I once started a dance party there and got everyone in the restaurant to start dancing. It was such a blast.

What is your favorite Manhattan book or favorite character in Manhattan literature?
Carrie. Because I love her.

Who would you like to be for a day and why?
I would be one of the beatniks... I grew up really influenced by their movement and would love to be in their shoes.

If you could have anything in Manhattan named after you what would it be and why?
A strip club! People would always be like "why do you have a strip club named after you?" and I'd be like "because I'm a boss!!" Or a library.... because to have that happen, I'd really have to be a boss :).

What has been your best Manhattan athletic experience?
Trapeze. I got really into it when I lived there.

What is your favorite thing to do in Manhattan that you can do nowhere else?
The High Line... hands down.

If you could have dinner with any person living or passed, who would it be and why?
Michael Jackson. Because he's been a favorite of mine since I was a kid.

What has been your best Manhattan art or music experience?
Learning to DJ at Angels and Kings has been one of my all time favorite experiences in NYC.

What do you personally do or what have you done to give back to the world?
I sign every petition that comes my way in regards to animal rights and protection. One day it would be a dream to own a sanctuary.

What do you think is most underrated and overrated in Manhattan?
Overrated is Times Square. Barf. Barf. Barf.

Other than Movers and Shakers of course, what is your favorite Whom You Know column and what do you like about it?
Manhattan Tips because everyone deserves to know the underground hotspots they should hit.

Have you tried The Peachy Deegan yet and if not, why not?
I didn't even know there was such thing as a Peachy Deegan, but now that I do - I'm in for a taste test!

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
If anyone wants to learn more about the movie I'm making, please feel free to email. I'd love to answer any questions. Plus, we're coming back to NYC to film!

How would you like to be contacted by Whom You Know readers?

Mover and Shaker Russ Cohen is working hard on his third book which deals with major league baseball players who've won the coveted "Rookie of the Year" award. Cohen has been spreading the word about his third release about The Winter Classic. Since the NHL has announced that the next one will indeed take place in Detroit, MI next January, his phone has been ringing off the hook. Many are finding the book as the bible for that famous game. His co-author, Mike del Tuffo has been getting plenty of mentions as well and Cohen is delighted with the sales so far. Cohen has noticed that the kindle version has been selling best and soon the book will be released on the Ipad. Cohen and del Tufo plan to be in Detroit next year for the big game and their not sure which of the other "outdoor" games, not Winter Classics, they might attend. In 2014 Cohen and Adam Raider, who he worked with on "100 Ranger Greats", will be releasing a new book titled, "100 Things That Every New York Ranger Fan Should Know & Do Before They Die" to be published by Triumph. Having just got back from a trip to the White House celebrating the Kings Stanley Cup run last year Cohen will be covering the Cup again this year as well as the NHL Draft in New Jersey, where he will host a live radio show.   Russ commented on the NHL playoffs extensively in 2012:
We are so pleased to present him as our latest double feature in Awesome Authors and Red Carpet Regulars!  Recently we reviewed the Winter Classic, his latest book:
Peachy Deegan interviewed Russ Cohen for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan:
How did you go about putting together The Winter Classic and was it hard to write extensively about an event so young?
Russ Cohen: Both Mike and I just decided after the last one in Philadelphia that we should write a book about it because each one is its own individual event. All are hockey games but every one had their own identity based on the city that it was in, the teams that matched up, and the weather, which is always unpredictable. It is a young event but since we had covered them all we banked on the fact that we had more information about it than anybody else out there.

What is your favorite particular Winter Classic and why?
I would have to say the 2010 affair in Fenway Park. A historic venue, two solid teams, the first Winter Classic fight, unprecedented access to players and a tour of the "Green Monster" inside and out was unforgettable.

Where is the best place to get octopus for the next one?
In the ocean? I honestly don't know. I have been to Detroit a few times but I never asked around.

Rangers fans are pleased with round one-what made Washington choke in Game 7?
When the Capitals decided to play the victim in regards to the Derek Dorsett play that they thought was a slew foot. That was the start. After the game a few players whined about it and to me once you do that it either galvanizes the team or it distracts them. I asked a reporter from Washington that exact question, because I know he's around the team 24-7 and the morning before the game he answered, "they seem distracted" even though I picked the Caps in 7 before the series I knew the Rangers had a good chance. After the game a Caps player again complained about calls, etc, you can't play the victim in the NHL playoffs. Once you do that you undermine a winning attitude.

Who is your favorite Ranger today and why?
Henrik Lundqvist. He's one of the greatest goalies on the planet. He's very different from other goalies that I've interviewed and watched. He's the same guy on and off the ice. He's a regular guy even though he's got a rockstar following. He rarely complains and he's all about winning.

What surprised you most about Round One in the NHL Playoffs?
The amount of backup goalies who had to step up without notice and try to play at the highest level. Josh Harding, who was just nominated for the Masterton, has MS and yet he continues to play. Originally before the diagnosis I figured he'd be the #1 goalie in Minnesota one day but after that I wasn't sure. He hadn't played a game for the Wild since early February and then their #1 goalie got hurt in warmups and he was inserted into the lineup and played every game until the Wild were eliminated. Tomas Vokoun, in Pittsburgh has wresteled away the #1 status from incumbent, Marc-Andre Fleury for now as well.

What do you expect to happen in Round Two?
I think the cream will rise to the top. Round 1 is always full of upsets. After teams get over that hump the ones with the most talent, and best work ethic tend to stick around. Great goaltending is important as well.

We have high hopes for the Chicago Blackhawks. How do you like their chances?
I expect to see them in the Stanley Cup once again. Their power play should be better and they have a bevy of offensive and defensive talent. Corey Crawford is having his best year between the pipes and Ray Emery is a great insurance policy to have as a backup netminder.

Do you plan to write more books on hockey and which specific subjects possibly?
"100 Things That Every New York Ranger Fan Should Know & Do Before They Die" will come out in 2014. Myself and "100 Ranger Greats, writing partner, Adam Raider and I are working on this tome right now. It will feature a lot of different subjects and unusual stories about the New York Rangers from the early 20's through today.

Did you watch college hockey this year and if so what are your thoughts on the season?
I did watch and I was at the "Frozen Four". I was happy to see such a great ECAC presence and the fact that Yale won was amazing. It's harder for Ivy League schools to recruit star players because of the academic restrictions and yet they managed to win it all. Great story. Great season.

Doesn't baseball seem too slow to write about compared to hockey?
Slower yes, but it's a very cerebral sport. I still play softball and you have to constantly think about what you will do at the plate and in the field. It adds a dimension to the sport when writing about it.

Would you ever write on American football and how did you like Tom Coughlin's new book?
I heard about his book and I liked what I heard and saw in excerpts. I could write a book about the New York Jets but it might be too painful. I'd consider that for sure.

How are all your animals?
Doing very well. Perla is our latest project and she's a blind Podenco we adopted from Spain. She has intestinal issues as well so it's taken us over a year to get her stabilized and now we are working on taking her to the next level with the help of some experts. She's a very spirited dog that doesn't let anything hold her back.

What would you like to do professionally that you have not yet had the opportunity to do?
I'd like to be a color analyst for hockey or baseball games or even just one game. I know I can do it. I am like a warehouse of useless information and I have a passion for both sports.

What one word best describes you and why?
Reliable. You can count on me to keep my word. I'm very old school about that.

If you could hire anybody who would it be and why?
J.K. Rowling. As a ghost writer. LOL

What is your favorite drink?
Beer. Canadian, German, or a Micro-Brew.

What is your favorite restaurant in Manhattan?
Carmines. Great entrees and desserts.

Who would you like to be for a day and why?
I'd like to proof the photos for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue and decide which ones make the final cut. Do I really need to explain why?

What has been your best Manhattan athletic experience?
Hitting a home run in a fast pitch softball league in Central Park. That shot advanced us into the next round of the playoffs.

What is your favorite thing to do in Manhattan that you can do nowhere else?
Walk around Times Square and just take it all in. There's nothing like it.

If you could have dinner with any person living or passed, who would it be and why?
Tom Seaver. He's my favorite all-time athlete and I'm pretty sure I could write a book about it.

What do you think is most underrated and overrated here?
Underrated: The Subway System. Overrated: Lindy's Cheesecake.

Other than Movers and Shakers of course, what is your favorite Whom You Know column and what do you like about it?
Manhattan Tips. I love the restaurant reviews-Peachy's Picks!

Have you tried The Peachy Deegan yet and if not, why not?
No, but it's on my list!

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
I'm trained in search and rescue. I'm a freelance writer. My Twitter handle is @Sportsology

Since last we caught up with Mover and Shaker Fiona Walsh, she’s had several different hairstyles! Her biggest achievement has been the launch of her music-related website – www.clubbersguidenewyork.com – a website primarily focused on the underground techno scene in New York. For her 1st anniversary party, Fiona partnered with Trilogy NYC to bring international techno producer and dj, Steve Rachmad to NYC, his first appearance here in about 6 years. The party was a great success.

She also forged a connection with Detroit legend Jeff Mills, one of the originators of techno music. Subsequently she wrote and acted in a short segment which was included in Jeff’s “Something in the Sky” performance. She was honored to be included in Jeff’s book “Sequence – an Axis Records Retrospective”, a limited edition book featuring images and music from Jeff’s 20 plus years in the industry.

Last summer she partnered with Tim Chan, from Pollination to bring some more talent to NYC top live music venue Arlene’s Grocery. Huseyin Evirgen, half of the German techno duo cassegrain made his NYC debut there as well as Realmz, a top PA-based producer and dj. She plays music herself as Spin D at venues all over the city and is looking forward to her first Irish gig later in the year.

On the comedy front she was delighted to be asked to host the NY Irish Center’s Benefit Gala at Symphony Space with top Irish comedians, Brendan Grace and Pat Shortt (Kilnaskully, Garage). The show was a great success and raised much needed funds for the Center. This year she also played at the Irish Arts Center Political cabaret night with well-known Irish economist David McWilliams and singer/comedian from Ireland Late Late Show, Paddy Cullivan. Sundays at Seven, the show she co-produces with her friend Ann Design is now going into its 11th season and continues to draw crowds to the west side Irish Arts Center second Sunday of every month.

Other bits of fun included looping work on Boardwalk Empire and a new James Gray movie.

She continues to be active with the Coalition to Ban NYC Carriage Horses (banhdc.org) and took part in a humane education event for children at the beginning of the year at the NYC Vegetarian Festival.

She is also working on new writing and read some of her material recently at the Irish Writers and Arts Salon at the Thalia Theater at Symphony Space.  We are thrilled to present Fiona Walsh as our latest feature in Red Carpet Regulars.  Peachy Deegan interviewed Fiona Walsh for Whom You Know.

Peachy Deegan:
How is Warren Beatty doing?
Fiona Walsh:
Aww Warren! Sadly we’ve not made contact yet but I do live in hope. I expect he’s fabulous as always!

We're afraid we're not so techno...how is techno defined and what should the world know about its merits?
Hmm. Good question. I would define techno as a state of mind or at least music that puts you in a very specific state of mind. Obviously mostly designed to make you dance but can be very relaxing too, almost hypnotic. I’ve always been into dance music (you know about my solo show!) so techno almost seems like a logical progression for me. I work hard every day to spread the gospel of techno as I think it is the best music on the planet!

When was the birth of techno and what is its history?
Detroit is the home of techno. Obviously it’s a huge music town with the whole Motown sound coming from there. But essentially techno emerged in the late 80's with people like Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Jeff Mills and Juan Atkins bringing it to the fore. The sound traveled to Europe where it got mashed up in Germany (Berlin is a big source of the music) and back to the U.S. Right now NYC is experiencing a techno revival. Every year there is the Movement Festival in Detroit at the end of May that celebrates techno in all its forms from its birthplace and around the world. I will be covering the Festival again this year for my site.

We think Irish anything is better than a noun without being modified by Irishness. Is there Irish techno and if so what are the hottest groups?
There is for sure!! Ireland has always been a great seeding ground for all music and techno is no different. Sian (Graham Sian) is one of the hottest techno producers from Ireland.  But there are so many it’s hard to name them all. Many have been featured on my website!

What makes one a successful DJ?
Ah another good question! Well there are many successful djs but that I think makes a great dj from my experience both in front and behind the decks, comes down to feeling a connection to the music you’re playing. I think if a dj is excited about sharing his/her music, it will translate to the crowd and elevate the mood. There are many factors but to me that’s the primary one.

What are your latest Irish jokes?
You will have to come hear them at Sundays at Seven – May 19th!

How is your mom in Ireland doing?
Thank you she’s doing well, My dad passed away in the interim so of course that’s a huge life change for her but she’s happy with our dog Max and her involvement in local events back home.

What are you currently writing?
Well I’m always working on an interview or feature for my website but creatively of course comedy. I’m also tinkering away at a more serious piece about my eating disorder as a teen. It’s a slow process but I did read some of it last month at the Irish Writers and Artists Salon.

What one word best describes you and why?
Enthusiastic!! If a subject or issue or person gets my attention… watch out!

If you could hire anybody who would it be and why?
He’d never do it but if I could hire my friend George Heslin to sit around and talk to me all day I would! He never fails to amuse me!

What is the funniest thing that has ever happened to you at a cocktail party?
I don’t think anything too embarrassing – maybe some red wine spillage. I’m generally well behaved!

Who would you like to be for a day and why?
Mayor of NYC so I could help pass all the animal friendly legislation that needs to happen!

If you could have dinner with any person living or passed, who would it be and why?
I think Bill Maher the comedian. I love his show and sense of humor. He’s got a bit of Irish in him and we’d have a good chat I think!

What do you personally do or what have you done to give back to the world?
Oh not enough. I’m very passionate about animal and human rights but I try to use the social media to network for pets who need homes or highlight issues that I think people might need to know about or that get my attention. I volunteer from time to time with animal charities.

What do you think is most underrated and overrated here?
( I said this before but no harm to reiterate!) How friendly NYC’ers are and overrated is pizza!

Other than Movers and Shakers of course, what is your favorite Whom You Know column and what do you like about it?
Laugh with Peachy by Petunia the Pig. I love pigs and the photos are so cute!

Have you tried The Peachy Deegan yet and if not, why not?
I haven’t but its on my to do list!

What else should Whom You Know readers know about you?
I’m from Tipperary and I hate unmanageable sandwiches!!

How would you like to be contacted by Whom You Know readers?
