Once upon a time there was a girl that grew up going to a million hockey games. Guess what her name was.  Now that we're working with the NHL we think it's fine to admit the truth: she did want to go to Boston College for the hockey team.  On the campus tour the first day she ever set foot on campus she and her dad left the tour to try out multiple seating arrangements in Conte Forum because seats are so important.  In Hartford, she and her family often went to Shelly's Deli in the Hartford Civic Center and she loved it. Peachy Deegan rarely travels to a spot without knowing something of the edible climate (she must not starve! or worse yet, eat bad food) and everyone who is anyone told her if she goes to Newark, she must go to Hobby's Deli which is a hop, skip and a jump from where the New Jersey Devils play.

Though she met and interviewed Martin Brodeur after this visit to Hobby's, she was well aware of the fact that he has his own table there-see above. In fact, she told him she was at it earlier in the day on the day when she interviewed him. Brothers Marc and Mike have a winner here (it has been in their family for 50 years) so get hungry for the hit parade.   And Martin Brodueur gave her the thumbs up on this place too so you can feel even better about what we have to say.  And for everyone scared of Newark-we are right there with you but when you have awesome people like Marc standing there on the sidewalk happy to see you have arrived it is worth the trip.  We felt fairly safe inside The Rock and close to it and Hobby's is close to it.
If you are going to a deli, of course you need a corned beef reuben silly. Please meet the Classic Reuben above! Hobby's Own Homemade Corned Beef with sauerkraut and melted imported swiss cheese and russian dressing will have your tastebuds dancing in delight! It is clear from first bite why this location has had a restaurant for the last 100 years, the last 50 of which it has been Hobby's Deli. You don't last 50 years by accident.
The sandwich is a bit of a ham and it insisted upon a closeup. You ought to starve yourself for a week prior to entering this temple of laudable carnivorism!   Though it could feed multiple people, this is one order.
Amazing pickles that are crisp, crunchy and the perfect assist to the hat trick of a reuben await you as well.
If you have actually seen Peachy in the last few weeks you know she is on the exhausted and run down side of things because there are too many convincing activities that consume her.  Marc suggested this Homemade Chicken Soup which lasted about 5 minutes after we left Hobby's.  It is simply the best Homemade Chicken Soup we have ever had.   You do not need to be Jewish to like the Matzoh Ball here.  Huge chunks of flavorful chicken with real carrots and celery bathed in broths of the Gods and this is what the doctor ordered for sure.  We were so sad when it was gone!  Just incredible.
Hobby's Chopped Garden Salad is a must.  Fresh garden vegetables attractively chopped have a party with crisp lettuce and they put dressing on the side, as instructed.  It was a certain balance for all the appealing deli-ness!
We must admit that though we ordered the reuben and it was amazing, we were most impressed with the culinary wonder of the 1st Period Over Stuffed Sandwich Combo of Corned Beef and Pastrami with Cole Slaw and Russian Dressing.  Of course we could not eat it all at once but you know who was breaking the eating rules on the Path on the way back to Manhattan with this. Those rules cannot be obeyed when you are carrying Hobby's delights.
We don't know how to verbally address the supremacy of this sandwich.
You'll have to go there and order it for yourself.  You'll feel so devilish in every mouthful.
Again, you will be sad when it magically vanishes completely into your stomach.
Marc and Mike suggested we try the Mediterranean Platter as well.  If you are more angel than devil, this one's for you.  It is their authentic, homemade Hummus, Israeli Salad and warm Pita served with Grilled Breast of Chicken.  Every bite was delicious and wholesome!  Again, no Jewishness required and this was liked by the pretty (as in mostly) Catholic girl.  You could also go for Pan-Seared Salmon instead of Chicken or Grilled Vegetables.  However, we believe that if you think you are a Vegetarian prior to entering Hobby's, it is likely you will convert to carnivorism because you will not be able to resist.  If you do, we just feel sorry for you because you are really missing out!
Finally, at the bottom you see we tried the Chico Reuben. There's a story behind this: Devils Broadcaster Chico Resch wanted to include his sister in a segment of his popular feature, "Chico Eats," being filmed at Hobby's.   We understand he wanted to employ the tastebud shock factor a bit to surprise his poor sister - adding pepper jack instead of swiss and enhancing a Pastrami Reuben with hot sauce.  Oooh pretty fiery, but after all we know they are influenced by Devils....
Hobby's Deli is Terrific Takeout!  Thumbs up from Peachy.  Maybe next time we can go with #30.

Terrific Takeout: New Jersey

Did you ever think Peachy would leave Manhattan to go to New Jersey to eat?  She did leave Manhattan to work with the NHL at The Rock where the Devils play. She is better at interviewing when she is well fed...and we found one shining star to start this column!
