From Girl Power to Horse Power in Marlies Dekkers’ equestrian-themed lingerie collections for next spring
Marlies Dekkers is inspired by the beauty of stallions and their Amazonian riders for her new 2009 spring collection of lingerie. Four sensuous themes take us from day to night - riding gear, lipizzaner, horsepower and voltige. Marlies Dekkers latest Girls collection, calamity jane, takes a more light-hearted and fun approach to ladies on horseback, while Nightdressed includes the loungewear story black beauty.
Riding gear
Riding gear is inspired by the glamour of the 2006 Madonna photo shoot for US magazine W entitled Madonna Rides Again. Photographed by Steven Klein, 58 pages detail the exploits of six stallions and a celebrity through black leather, riding crops and glossy skin. For the lingerie, Marlies has designed a collection in sensuous black microfibre trimmed with sexy black faux leather straps and embossed equestrian detailing.
Both padded bras – a plunge and a balcony – feature a dramatic back detail of a cameo of black faux leather embossed with an image of a horse. Positioned sexily between the shoulder blades, the cameo is held in place by fine straps of black faux leather and a gunmetal-toned linked chain. Gunmetal studs and rings accent the front of all the bras, including an unpadded style.
Embossed tonal prints of the horse cameo appear on the front of a tanga and thong brief, while the Brazilian brief sports a mini version to one side. Accessorize this collection with a stretch viscose top with long halter neck ties, cheeky sock garters in black, black knee socks with knitted-in strap motifs and finally - what every girl wants - a black satin pony club rosette.
Lipizzaner
The second group, lipizzaner, takes its cue from the famous Spanish riding school in Vienna, well known for its dancing white Lipizzaner stallions. Classic white quilted leather saddles are translated into a tonal print of trompe l’oeil quilting onto dazzling white microfibre. All three styles of bra feature detailing of silver-coloured metal studs across the neckline; the stud detailing is echoed on the three brief silhouettes – two styles of thong and a Brazilian short. A waspie with suspender straps adds a sexy edge, while a Pima cotton/Lycra camisole acts as the ideal outerwear piece.
Making lace modern – Marlies Dekkers lingerie brings lace into the 21st century
Marlies Dekkers wants to update the way lace is used in lingerie - taking inspiration from the designs of the past and reworking them into sleek, modern shapes for the 21st century woman. She has created four new stories for next summer’s Undressed line, célestine, hard lace, modern ajour and costume drama, plus two special size ranges, swan lake and you are who you believe you are for those ladies with curves.
For célestine, Marlies was inspired by Luis Buñuel’s surrealist film The Diary of a Chambermaid. Set in the 1920s, the film explores the morals of the French bourgeoisie from the point of view of scheming chambermaid Célestine, played by Jeanne Moreau. The lingerie of the 20s plays its part, as Célestine is no longer needed to lace Madame’s corset - thanks to the introduction of new fan-style lacings. Marlies has taken this idea of fan lacings and designed a metallic silver jewellery piece that allows slim black cords of elastic to interlace through it, creating dramatic sexy necklines to the front of bras, between the shoulder blades on a racer back silhouette or across the hips of a thong and brief. Designed in a smooth black microfibre, this range comprises three styles of bra, three briefs and an underwired racer-back camisole top.
Hard lace takes its reference from the contemporary use of lace-like patterns in interior design, where lace designs are translated into hard materials such as metal or plastic. Marlies explores this theme by creating a transparent ornament with white lace that acts as body jewellery, linking fine strands of white elastic to form a halter neckline on a bra, a racer-back silhouette or a decorative feature on the back of the briefs.
The range comes in brilliant white microfibre and has a modern paisley motif printed in tonal white onto the front of a thong, short and underwired body with suspender straps. To complete the look, add a Pima cotton/Lycra lacy pointelle knit vest top with modern paisley motif, plus cute white cotton/Lycra knee-high socks with knitted in lacing effect and bow.
In modern ajour, Marlies has translated the traditional lacy knitting technique of ajour̩ into a subtle print of vintage nets arranged as a stripe in tonal graphite grey onto black microfibre. All the pieces are also decorated in parts with clusters of tiny black crystal stones. Choose between three styles of padded bra Рbalcony, plunge and French balcony Рand three briefs Рtwo thongs and a Brazilian short. A camisole top with slim shoulder straps acts as an ideal summer party piece.
Costume drama takes inspiration from the rich satin colours worn in the portraits of the Dutch Master paintings of the 17th century. Garnet red, persimmon orange, rose silk and russet brown are combined together for a playful high summer mix. Designed in a soft microfibre, the four shades are used together on the three styles of padded bra; with garnet red used to outline and as straps. The red shade is used for the three styles of brief, given contrast elastic in orange or rose silk. A matching suspender belt combines rose silk, red and russet brown, while a cross-over V-neck sleeveless tunic top in stretch viscose jersey mixes orange with red.
Undressed always includes special sizes for curvier ladies in the collection. In swan lake, the dazzling white tutus of the ballerinas and the graceful silhouette of the swan princess Odette have been turned into a collection in bright white microfibre accented with a bird motif in a tonal silver birch grey.
The bird perches on the left cup of two styles of padded bra and on the racer-back of a third style, as well as on the front or back of each of the three brief silhouettes. Coordinating silver birch grey elastic frames the necklines and brief shapes in different ways. A loose-fitting tunic top in stretch viscose jersey features scoop neckline, strap details to the back neckline, printed bird motif and 70s-style long bell sleeves.
The final collection, you are who you believe you are, takes its inspiration from the young Brigitte Bardot, her early films such as And God Created Woman and her love of pink gingham – even using it as for a wedding dress at her marriage in the late 50s to actor Jacques Charrier. Marlies creates a collection all in black microfibre and mesh; the necklines decorated with undressed’s classic fine strips of black elastic. However, there is a surprise hidden behind the sober black – the inside of the bras are lined with a cheery pink and white gingham à la BB, the check made up from a mix of prints; a tulle pattern and scrolling leaves. The gingham is topped by a print of eyelash-fringed black lace that runs inside the neckline. A further surprise nestles inside the lining of the briefs! The same pink gingham print inscribed with the words - You are who you believe you are – a line from a poem written by designer Marlies Dekkers herself. Three styles of moulded padded bra and three brief silhouettes are given a coordinating blouson-style tunic top in stretch black viscose jersey trimmed with black satin neckline and long satin ties.
The special size bras are available from 32 to 40 in D and E cup and 32 to 38 in F cup.
This spring|summer 2009 undressed women and undressed special sizes collection from marlies|dekkers are due into stores from May 2009.
Bra cup sizes range from A to D, plus D to F for the special size range. Briefs and coordinates, from xsmall to xlarge, plus xxlarge for the special size range.
Retail prices range from $149 to $185 for a bra, $79 to $99 for a brief and $49 to $265 for the coordinating suspender belt, body, vest, camisole tops and socks.
