MOVERS AND SHAKERS: Scott Herman, Athlete Extraordinaire, MTV Real World Star, DJ, Model and Actor
As an aspiring entrepreneur, Scott Herman constantly finds himself surrounded by not only success but new opportunities.
At the young age of fourteen, Scott applied for his first job at Gold’s Gym in Methuen, MA. By the age of fifteen he was performing gym maintenance, running the front desk, and selling memberships. When Gold’s Gym was relocated to a new 65,000 sq. ft. facility, Scott was promoted to a manager’s position. At eighteen he became a personal trainer and has been training men and woman from the ages of twelve to eighty-three ever since.
Before moving to Brooklyn to appear on “The Real World”, Scott not only managed the fitness department and sales department for “Answer Is Fitness” located in North Attleboro, MA, but he also developed and ran a highly successful DJ company called “Galaxy DJ’s”. In addition to this work, Scott attended and received his BA in Business from Merrimack College in North Andover, MA. Concurrently, he acquired his real estate and financial advising licenses.
Scott’s modeling career really started to take off his senior year of college after he entered and won the Men’s Health “Iron Abs” contest in November 2007. He then began making a series of personal appearances and began traveling to New York City for castings and other events, and the more he became acquainted with the city, the more his interest in becoming a professional model/actor grew.
In December 2007, Scott sent his audition tape into The Real World: Brooklyn and was selected from a pool of approximately 50,000 to 70,000 applicants. He moved into the Real World house six months later and, now that filming is over, has decided to stay in Manhattan. He is excited to continue taking acting classes, go on auditions, and pursue his new career.
Scott is also an accomplished athlete and enjoys sports such as wresting, soccer, running cross country, boxing and kickboxing. He spends his days going to castings, the gym, and updating his fitness website, www.scotthermanfitness.com. Peachy Deegan chatted with Scott Herman recently and hopes he inspires all Whom You Know readers to get in shape for spring!
Peachy Deegan: When you were 14 what drew you to the gym?
Scott Herman: Well I have been working out since I was 12 and my close friend Ryan Thomas http://ryanthomastattoos.com/artwork/441393.html , who was on the wrestling team with me, asked if I wanted to work at the gym with him on Saturday mornings. At this point I had outgrown my weight bench and 20lbs dumbbells and was very excited to have access to variety of equipment so I quickly said yes and started that week.
Whom You Know has heard you have the best abs on the East Coast. How did you get them?
My abs are the result of hard work. In my experience most people do not train their abs as hard as they train their arms, legs, or chest. How often do you hear someone grunting while doing sit ups? By this I mean, when someone is struggling because they are really pushing themselves say on a chest press, they may make some noise. Well, that’s me with my abs. I push them to the limit and enjoy the pain of not being able to laugh because my stomach is too sore. It is just my thing.
What do you like most about being a trainer and how does that compare to being a DJ?
What I like most about being a trainer is that I get to help people. Even now while living in the city, I am not training anymore, but I can’t help but to correct the form of nearby members. I have such a passion for fitness and I really enjoy being able to share my knowledge and help change lives. Compared to being a DJ, I can say that when you can get a crowd of people jumping around and having a great time, that sense of accomplishment feels just as great as when I help someone reach their goals. It is all about interacting with people and having fun.
Have you exercised your Real Estate and Financial Advisory licenses professionally?
I mainly got my Real Estate license for my own knowledge of how to buy and sell in the market. I did work with a firm for a short time; however I was also working full time as a trainer and going to college. As far as my financial advisory license, I received it around the same time as my real estate license and this was for my own knowledge. I have always dabbled in stocks and mutual funds and have enjoyed helping my friends manage their money.
What do you hold- a Series 7?
Before I came out to the show I had received my licenses to sell life insurance, set up mortgages, and to set up debt consolidation programs. I was studying for my series-6, but then the Real World came along. I decided that I still have the books and have an interest, but I want to try something new. I had been working full time and going to school for so long; I thought I was due for little vacation after graduating from college.
For all Americans not in shape, what would you say to motivate them?
You don’t have to be super lean to be in shape. That is not what fitness is all about. Your fitness goals should reflect how you want to look and feel and you have the power to accomplish anything. The only person who should be able to tell you that you can and cannot do something is “yourself”. So believe in yourself, have fun, and make fitness a lifestyle.
What is the best exercise to do and why?
The best exercise is the type that you will actually do on daily basis. By this I mean you will work harder performing the exercises that you enjoy.
