BIG APPLE BUSINESS: MARSIA HOLZER STUDIO

Marsia Holzer Studio is committed to salvaging huge exotic trees that have fallen in storms-nothing is cut. A look of organic simplicity is achieved by hand-crafting bases of bronze, steel, or glass that complement each unique piece of wood, resulting in huge slab tables that seem to float. Many of them retain the natural shape of the tree, with the blond sapwood running down the sides as though the wood was still in the forest.

For her lighting, Marsia scours the beaches of the Hamptons in her kayak for driftwood bases, which are later cast in different metals. Working with the foundry deep in the heart of Scotland, she creates table and floor lamps with cast bronze bases in arboreal shapes, complete with drum shades of parchment or fine Irish linen. Other materials of choice include rare woods and organic crystals.

Marsia Holzer Studio works with private clients, renowned architects, and designers, and each project is customized to the client’s specification. From beginning to end, Marsia Holzer Studio works closely with her clients in selecting slabs of wood and choosing bases and finishes.

Her noted designer clients include: David Rockwell, Jeffery Beers International, Thom Felicia, David Collins Studio, Tom Sheerer, Albert Hadley, Victoria Hagen, Zeff Designs, Theis and Khan (London), Brad Ford and Thomas Jayne.

Marsia’s roster of commercial projects features Yves Saint Laurent’s New York showroom, as well as restaurants ranging from Maize in London to Country and Hotel Gansevoort’s Ono in New York City. Marsia has designed original pieces for Carly Simon’s office and Norman Pearlstine’s new office in the Time Warner Building. Anne Jones, Badgley Mischka, and Mick Jones are also among Marsia’s esteemed portfolio of private clients.

Marsia Holzer Studio is represented in major cities including New York City, Southampton, Chicago, Dallas and Palm Beach, as well as in many beautiful homes across the US and internationally in Canada, England, India, and Mexico.

Formerly, Marsia was a costume designer for Broadway shows like “Hair” and “Man on the Moon,” and for musicians such as Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen, Sammy Davis Jr., The Mamas & Papas, and many other tours.

Marsia Holzer earned a degree in art history, sculpture and life drawing from St. Martin’s Art School in London and a degree in art education from the London School of Economics. Currently, she resides in New York City and Watermill, New York with her family.
