NIGHTLIGHT: Evening at Henri Bendel in honor of the Fragrance Foundation and the Living Perfume Exhibit
Evening at Henri Bendel in honor of the Fragrance Foundation and the Living Perfume Exhibit featuring a collaboration between Mandy Aftel, Johnny Iuzzini, Daniel Patterson and Audrey Saunders
Henri Bendel, the iconic New York retailer, held an opening reception on the evening of April 20th to celebrate the exhibit Living Perfume: The Natural Alchemy of Mandy Aftel, and to honor the Fragrance Foundation.
Audrey Saunders, owner of Pegu Club will provided mixology, Chef Daniel Patterson of Coi Restaurant served savory hors d’oeuvres, and Pastry Chef Johnny Iuzzini of Jean-Georges Restaurant created desserts for the occasion. Each of the artists worked with essential oils from Chef’s Essences, a line of culinary oils by Mandy Aftel.
The reception represents the first time the group has collaborated. “This event brings four artists together to create a very special multi-sensory experience that transcends our expectations of food and beverage,” said Claudia Lucas, Senior Vice President of Beauty & Gifts for Henri Bendel. The evening’s sponsors include Pernod Ricard, Arcade Ltd, and EA International.
The reception celebrates the opening of the exhibit Living Perfume: The Natural Alchemy of Mandy Aftel. The exhibit, which will run April 18 – May 11, 2009, will feature the perfume, the craft, and the collection of the world’s leading natural perfumer, Mandy Aftel. Henri Bendel is the exclusive New York retailer of her Aftelier line of hand-blended scents, which are created from the world’s finest natural ingredients. Dubbed the “angel of alchemy” by Vanity Fair, Aftel has designed custom blends for Hollywood stars, writers, and restaurants, as well as for private labels.
The exhibit will showcase the extraordinary materials that bring to life the art of natural perfume. It will be created using the responsible design principles of sustainable materials and eco-friendly sourcing, and it draws its inspiration from the natural world where Aftel’s fragrances originate.
"It is rare to have the opportunity to usher in a new art form, especially one that embodies such great beauty. We consider Aftelier to be the leader in natural perfume and are excited about sharing it with our customers through this historic exhibit," states Claudia Lucas.
“Smell is both the most powerful and the most underappreciated sense,” says Mandy Aftel. “The industrialization of both the food and perfume industries has created a separation between our minds, bodies and spirits, as well as from nature. Perfume created exclusively from natural materials and aromatics is a multi-layered phenomenon: In a breath, we are able to reconnect with the natural world and ourselves in new and profound ways. This is well understood by chefs Daniel Patterson and Johnny Iuzzini and mixologist Audrey Saunders, and I am honored to work with each of them. They are helping to introduce the use of essential oils into cuisine.”
The exhibit Living Perfume: The Natural Alchemy of Mandy Aftel is dedicated to the sense of smell, the experience of aromatics, and the art of natural perfume. Through the body of Aftel’s work – her perfumes and oils, research and writings, and personal library of rare books, graphics, and artifacts - it offers a unique and foundational view of the world of natural perfume. The exhibit features interactive learning opportunities for the public and runs from April 18 through May 11, on the third floor of Henri Bendel at 712 5th Avenue at 56th Street
