Peachy Picks Berimbau

Peachy is the kind of girl in Manhattan that pals around with her friends eating cheeseburgers at JG Melon in the latest Lilly Pulitzer. To her, Brazil means a recollection of "Breakfast at Tiffany's," one of her absolute favorites. Not to ruin the story for anyone, but surely everyone reading Whom You Know has read this classic! Holly falls in love with a loaded guy from Brazil, she tries to learn the language, and practically knits the plans to their Ranchhouse in it at one stage...

So, when Peachy Deegan learned about BERIMBAU, which she unequivocally now declares as THE BEST BRAZILIAN RESTAURANT IN MANHATTAN, located at 43 Carmine St, New York 10014 (occupying a space that used to be Deborah's), she was not quite sure what to think except she wished Holly was here to go with her. Peachy is indigenous to the Upper East side as Passionfruit is indigenous to Brazil.

When she arrived she could not have felt more welcome. Berimbau boasts a warm atmosphere and it's friendly aura is equally maintained by Mario the owner and Sergio the Designer and General Manager, shown above. (They will be featured as future Movers and Shakers.) Peachy was greeted with a new drink to her: the Caiphirinha- which is made with Rum from Brazil. Peachy and her dining companion enthusiastically tried the original version along with each of the flavors: passionfruit, kiwi, coconut, and strawberry, which was her favorite. (You know Peachy is Irish and was taught by her wonderful friends at University College Cork the art of alcohol consumption...) The drinks were fun, fresh and enjoyed along with the fabulous staff of Berimbau. Peachy especially liked the cute lobster on the glass too.

The appetizers were beautifully presented! We had Salpicao, a traditional Brazilian salad with shredded chicken and ham mixed with carrots, stick potatoes, raisins and a touch of citrus mayo. Paired with the Salpicao, which was light and fresh, we had Acaraje, a fritter-mashed black-eyed peas cake with vatapa topped off with sauteed shrimp. The Acaraje was outstanding!

The tropical flavors were everywhere at Berimbau, and they are perhaps most well-known for their Duck dish. Peachy's dining companion had this: Pato. Pato is duck breast marinated with cachaca and lime, and it was served with potato puree, spinach and mushroom sauce. Peachy had the Seared Sea Scallops, which were black pepper crusted with potato vilarejo and apple caper jus. Pedro was a fabulous waiter!

Another aspect of Berimbau that we like is its attention to detail and its high standards of cleanliness. The kitchen is out in the open and you can see how fastidious they are there. The backyard was also spotless and it seats 20 people in addition to the 50 in the inside restaurant. The fresh-cut daisies on each table were lovely!

The night was complete with desserts of caramel flan and passionfruit mousse. They were amazing and Peachy would be eating the passionfruit mousse again for breakfast today if she didn't care if she would fit into all of her fabulous Donna Ricco new dresses!

The food is excellent, the atmosphere is top-notch, and all associated with this winner make it a MUST on your dining list. This is up-scale dining that has no competition, and in a class of its own!

Peachy Deegan encourages each of you reading this to head STRAIGHT for Berimbau before the 50 seats available there fill up! Tell them Peachy Deegan sent you.

Berimbau is between Bedford & Bleecker Streets, located at 43 Carmine St, New York 10014.
