TASTY TIDBITS: Tocqueville

Since 2000 Tocqueville has been charming Union Square with its understated elegance and charm. The highly rated cuisine and service lures clients from near and far and a stellar wine list makes Tocqueville a destination for all gourmets. The intimate bar fills after work with gracious crowds who nibble on gouger and sip interesting wines by the glass.

Tocqueville is a labor of love for husband-and-wife team Jo-Ann Makovitzky and Marco A. Moreira.

Having perfected their expertise in some of the best kitchens and dining rooms in New York, they created Tocqueville as a civilized oasis dedicated to the art of dining. The original Tocqueville opened in 2000, an expansion of their Marco Polo Café, itself an offshoot from the couple’s very successful Marco Polo Caterers. The new Tocqueville opened in 2006, and like the original, was designed by the couple themselves.

Marco’s cooking is based on the philosophy that purchasing the world’s best seasonal ingredients and enhancing their natural flavors will produce fresh, innovative dishes. Having honed his skills in such kitchens as Bouley, the Quilted Giraffe, and the Mark, Brazilian-born Marco has been creating some of New York’s most innovative food since arriving in here in 1982.

Marco originally trained as a sushi chef, then started Marco Polo Sushi Catering. At Dean and Deluca, he created the sushi bar and met Jo-Ann, a trained chef in her own right who had studied at the Culinary Institute of America and cooked in such kitchens as La Caravelle. They joined forces to run Marco Polo Caterers before opening Tocqueville to critical acclaim.

The dedication of Jo-Ann and Marco is everywhere, from the self-designed dining rooms, to the dishes that leave the kitchen, to the care given to each customer. Tocqueville also continues to be home for their catering company, Marco Polo Caterers. Peachy Deegan is looking forward to telling Whom You Know readers more about this lovely little gem in Union Square!
