BIG APPLE BUSINESS: The Conran Shop

The Conran Shop, founded by Terence Conran, opened on 19 November 1973 at 77 Fulham Road, and in November 1987 the store relocated to Michelin House at 81 Fulham Road. This unique building was extensively restored and re-developed to its full 1911 glory, and the selling space offered a stunning 22,000 square feet, providing the opportunity for a far wider selection of ranges and the development of new departments in comparison to its original home.

In October 1992 a second Conran Shop opened in Paris on the corner of rue de Bac and rue Babylone housed in an Eiffel building on the Left Bank, and a year later The Conran Shop Contracts opened in London to provide a service for architects, interior designers and specifiers working on commercial projects.

A third Conran Shop opened in July 1994 in the Shinjuku Park Tower Building in Tokyo’s business district. This was a franchise partnership between Conran and LDC, a subsidiary company of Tokyo Gas. In October 1996 The Conran Shop in Fukuoka was opened as a result of another franchise partnership, and was followed in the autumn of 1997 with the opening of the second London store on Marylebone High Street in North London as well as a second store in Paris on Boulevard des Capucines in a reconstructed 19th Century building on the Right Bank in June 1999.

New York was next, with a definitive collection on offer housed underneath the Queensboro Bridge in the 59th Street area and with a subsequent store opening in Marunouchi, Tokyo.
