NIGHTLIGHT: Voices Against Brain Cancer

Peachy Deegan was particularly touched to attend this event last night as her grandmother, featured second from the right in the below photo "The Deegan Girls Out in Manhattan" (circa 1940s) passed away from Brain Cancer. This post and our coverage of this event and charity are dedicated to her.

VABC's fourth annual fundraising event, Sounding Off For A Cure, was held on Thursday, June 4, 2009 from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. Funds raised from the event will go toward research to find a cure for brain cancer.

The event honored Dr. Lisa DeAngelis (Co-Executive Director of the Brain Tumor Center and Chairman, Department of Neurology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center) with the Gary Lichtenstein Humanitarian Award and Al Musella (President, Musella Foundation For Brain Tumor Research & Information) with the Voices Award for their dedication and charitable giving to brain cancer research and support.

VABC presented the 2009 Courage Awards to several individuals who have bravely fought against this devastating disease: Marissa Carney, David Emmett, Jr., Robert Immerman, Florence Marazia, Mark Sherman, Jose Sinai, Kathy Swineford and Harold Winshel. Awards were presented by Board Member and brain cancer survivor Mike Burkhardt.

Their generous sponsors included Alyssa & Steven Gendal, The Lichtenstein Family, Newedge, Harry M. & Gertrude Y. Schwartz Foundation, Perry Ellis, New York Post, New York Mets, Dr. Kildeen Moore Research Fund, Leon Schigiel Group and Stephanie & David Simon.

Cuisine was provided by Flute Champagne Lounge, Woolworth Tower Kitchen, Philip Marie Restaurant, Bamboo 52, Heartland Brewery, Victor’s Café, Chocolate Dreams, STK, Lucky Strike, Ben’s Deli, Butterfield 8 and Grandaisy Bakery. Beverages were provided by Sonu, Liquid Chef, Heartland Brewery and AOC Fine Wines.

Whom You Know strongly suggests supporting such a worthy cause!
