BIG APPLE BUSINESS: California Wine Merchants

California Wine Merchants is located in the heart of Manhattan's Financial District and is the only wine store in New York City that specializes in wines from California. In fact, it is the only shop in the country that focuses almost exclusively on small production California wines.

The shop represents the best California has to offer; from outstanding inexpensive wines to limited production family wineries to famous names and the latest cult producers. It is the goal of California Wine Merchants to introduce lesser distributed and difficult to find wines to the New York market at the retail level. California Wine Merchants also offers a number of small production spirits, including an extensive Bourbon collection, as well as a carefully selected assortment of limited production wines from major wine growing regions outside of California.

The owners taste every wine before it comes into the store in order to make certain customers receive only the highest quality wines; this practice also ensures that all wines are accompanied by a personalized tasting note.

After hours the shop hosts numerous private, corporate, and public tasting events devoted to the appreciation of California wines. Wine education classes and cooperative restaurant tastings are being introduced in the fall.

About Taylor Senatore

After leaving his law practice, Taylor began his official wine career at the esteemed Sherry-Lehmann Wine & Spirits in New York City where he received significant high-end retail wine sales and operations experience. He has a wine accreditation from the French Culinary Institute and served as the wine director for Strip House, the famous New York City steak house, before opening California Wine Merchants in the heart of Manhattan's Financial District.

Jennifer D. Frank is a noted wine expert and author of “Wine At Your Fingertips” from Alpha Books, a division of the Penguin Group and publishers of the highly successful “Complete Idiot's Guide” series.
