In Memoriam: Wilbur, pet of our friend and devoted reader Krista McGruder
Wilbur Wellington Peel, born to greatness on June 15, 1999, hailed from the state of Missouri. In August of 1999, he arrived in New York City’s West Village to watch over his best friend, Krista McGruder. Wilbur became a neighborhood favorite and was chosen as “Mr. October” for the Washington Square Dog Run calendar. Wilbur had many celebrity admirers, among them: Gwyneth Paltrow, Edie Falco, Bebe Neuwirth, Walter Mosley, Michael Kors, Monica Lewinsky and Mini Anden. Because of his rugged good looks, Wilbur was chosen to represent the Today’s Man™ apparel line. Wilbur enjoyed rawhide bones, patrolling any perimeter and cuddling with his guardian. He took pride in the destruction of fine footwear by Jimmy Choo, Robert Clegerie, Valentino and Gucci. Wilbur helped rescue canines in need and opened his home and toy box to dozens of foster dogs. Wilbur is survived by his sister, Harriett Eleanor Peel, Pete the farm dog, Cordova the beagle and countless friends. To paraphrase Hobhouse, Wilbur possessed “Beauty without Vanity, Strength without Insolence, Courage without Ferocity, and all the Virtues of Man without his Vices.”
Wilbur you are in our prayers and thank you to Krista McGruder.
