July 4, 2009 Crown Re-Opening at the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island

On the 4th of July, Peachy Deegan thought it was a firecracker going off in her apartment but in fact it was her alarm clock alerting her that it was time to dash off to the excitingly Patriotic event of the day: The Re-Opening of the Crown of the Statue of Liberty! She put on her red, white and blue and headed to the boat downtown to get across the waters for the event that morning.

Whom You Know gave you sneak previews of this event:

The ceremony began with new US citizenship for members of the armed forces from around the world, and followed with the ribbon-cutting for the Crown Re-Opening: photos featured above of this. The 354 steps up to the crown were the most coveted steps of the day! Significant safety improvements have been implemented by the National Parks Service including an additional handrail to the double helix staircase.

The Albany Marine band provided the musical performance while Constantine Maroulis performed the National Anthems of both the United States and France. We cannot forget that the Statue was a gift from France! Maria Burks, Commissioner of the National Parks of New York Harbor, began with an introduction and was followed by Frank Mills, Acting Superintendent of the Statue of Liberty National Monument and Ellis Island. Filmmaker Ken Burns was the Master of Ceremonies.

After the Presentation of Colors, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the National Anthems, The Honorable Ken Salazar, US Secretary of the Interior, spoke on the importance of the crown re-opening and was followed by Governor Patterson and Governor Corzine.

Peachy Deegan was most entertained by the Governor's comments to each other!
(Paraphrased by Whom You Know:)
Governor Patterson: [after speaking, about to introduce Governor Corzine]...and I would like to remind you Governor Corzine that the Statue of Liberty IS on Liberty Island, in the State of New York!
Governor Corzine: Well Governor Patterson, I hope you don't fall off the boat on your way back because you will be in New Jersey's Waters!
They were both kidding of course, but you Whom You Know readers are smart enough to know THAT.

Among other dignitaries that spoke were Robert Menendez, a US Senator from New Jersey, Gregory Meeks, a US Congressman from New York, Whom You Know's favorite Mayor Michael Bloomberg WHOM we have endorsed!, Ms. Jane Holl Lute, Deputy Secretary, Department of Homeland Security, and Anthony Weiner, the US Congressman from New York who was most instrumental in the crown re-opening. We believed Congressman Weiner was a fabulous speaker!

Other musical performances followed and the crowds were testament to the fact that this was THE place to be for the 4th of July!

Thank you to the National Park Service from Whom You Know!
