IKUKO KATO is the creator of distinctive and beautiful “COCO KATO” jewellery.
She incorporates a highly refined taste and sensitivity to the subtleties of her craft with a love for doing the unthinkable and trying the unknown. “COCO KATO”
designs are always exciting and ambitious, and their emphasis ultimately lies in
attention to detail, craftsmanship, innovation and expression.

Since 2001, Ikuko has been based in London, after being born and raised in
Japan. This cross-cultural heritage has been a major influence on her designs.
“COCO KATO” provides a sensuous, luxurious experience for the wearer. Unique,
delicate and beautifully hand-crafted, they blend effortless style with timeless
appeal. But the most important quality in “COCO KATO” is the avant-garde. Ikuko is
always looking for ways to introduce the unexpected into small details within her
jewellery. Her experimental nature leads her to break away from traditional
structures to create jewellery that is innovative and startling.
Just one way in which this manifests itself is Ikuko’s love for uniting materials in
unusual ways. Her 2009 collection features a lot of silk – a material that Ikuko
finds fascinating. Its elegant and soft lustre, natural strength, and sumptuous
drape, combine with her pieces in a way that is original, surprising and beautiful.
That her designs manage to achieve such originality is due in part to Ikuko’s
background in fashion. Named ‘Designer of the Year’ by the prestigious Bunka
Fashion College in Tokyo, her career was nurtured at Tokyo’s renowned ISSEY
MIYAKE fashion house, and this has had a big impact on her designs. Ikuko has
an increased sensitivity to materials and design as well as balance and
harmony, and enjoys a certain freedom from jewellery conventions.
