Just Announced!

Wed. Aug. 5 The Afromotive
$10/11pm A fan once said, "It's sounds like James Brown's band
went to Africa." Furthering the connection between traditional African
rhythms and American funk and dance music is precisely what Afromotive
is doing with their style of afrobeat music. Based in Asheville, NC, this
large ensemble stays true to the elements that started afrobeat music- West
African rhythms, song forms, and instrumentation- while bringing the
music to the 21st Century through strong composition, improvisation, and
heavy dance beats.

Funk Fest
Thurs. Aug.6 Frank Viele & The Manhattan Project 10pm/ Mr.
Breakdown 9pm/ Amber Blues 7:30pm
$10/7:30pm Put simply, a Frank Viele show is a thinking man's party
where all the thoughts are good ones and, even better, you can dance to
them. Dancing is just the natural human reaction to the music coming from
the stage. Viele's tunes are so alive and the melodic and intricate vocal
lines so engaging, they open a door for an audience to dance on in, have a
dialogue with the band, and become quickly enrapt as they hear a story
or two.

Sat. Aug. 8 U-Melt with special guests tba
$12adv., $15 The spirit of the progressive rock era - the readiness to
experiment, the premium on precision and the openness to move beyond
preconceived boundaries - lives in the music and ethos of U-Melt. 8pm
Show The untraditional sound comes from varied backgrounds of the men who
make up the New York based band. U-Melt's live shows, which include a
marathon seven hour set at the Garden of Eden festival, their
traditional New York City New Year's Eve celebrations and a Halloween
tributes to cinematic masterpieces, showcase U-Melt's innovation and depth.
A wise fan knows to expect the unexpected once U-Melt hits the stage.

Thurs. Aug. 20 Moshav Band 9:15pm/ Rock of David 7:30pm
$12 adv., $20 dos Raised on the Moshav Meor Modi'im, a musical village
in the hills between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, the three young men who make up
Moshav -- Yehuda (vocals, percussion), Duvid (vocals,
8pm guitar), and Yosef (bass) -- have learned and played music since
childhood. Imagine the jamming of Phish mixed with the vocal strength of
Pearl Jam and the spiritual lyrics of U2 seasoned with a Middle
Eastern influence, and you can begin to describe the unique sound of Moshav.
It's not typical for a band that the mainstream rock world is not yet
familiar with to make their first mainstream release a "Best Of"
compilation but, for Moshav, already well-known and hugely successful in the
Judaic market, it makes perfect sense. Although their music comes from and
is steeped in the Jewish culture of their upbringing, Moshav is as
mainstream as any pop/alternative band.

Fri. Aug. 21 Donna Jean Godchaux Band featuring Jeff Mattson
$18 adv., $20 dos Born in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Donna Jean
was a vocalist at both Muscle Shoals
8pm Doors Sound Studios and Fame Studios, home of the
legendary "Muscle Shoals Sound," on records like Elvis Presley's
"Suspicious Minds," Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman," and
9pm Show Boz Scagg's eponymous first solo album. In the
1970s, she married Keith Godchaux, moved to CA and became a vocalist in the
Grateful Dead as well as the Jerry Garcia Band. After life
with the Dead, she and Keith created the Heart of Gold Band with drummer
Greg Anton and guitarist Steve Kimock. Following various side trips, she
resumed serious focus on her singing
in the '90s, recording a new Heart of Gold Band album, At
the Table, and singing with Phil & Friends and her own Donna Jean Band.

JULY

Thurs. July 9 Zepparella- An All Female Tribute to Led Zeppelin w/
Into The Void- A Black Sabbath tribute
$12 adv., $15 dos Zepparella is a four women intent on bringing the
passion, the beauty, the aggression, the musicality of Led Zeppelin alive.
Zepparella delivers an explosive, emotional musical journey at every
8pm show event. They take on the challenge of balancing their
devotion to playing the songs as close to the original as possible, while
taking advantage of their own musical communication and carrying the
audience away on the ride. The combination of personalities in Zepparella
is something extraordinary. From the first time on stage there was such a
strong musical connection that to the girls it
felt like a homecoming. And in a musical career, that kind
of connection may be the most elusive gift of all.

Fri. July 10 Emergency Service 11:30pm/ Goodbye Champions 9:30pm
/ Shark Hat 8:30pm / The Ragbirds 7:30pm
$10/7:30pm In 2005, Redbirds' songwriter, vocalist and
multi-instrumentalist Erin Zindle and drummer Randall had a desire to create
original music weaving their love of world sounds into the energetic, catchy
folk-rock songs that Erin had written. The band has come to call this unique
blend of styles "infectious global groove" and will play this year's 2009
Rothbury Music Festival.

performances at charitable events and fundraisers locally and
internationally. The Subscribers have steadfastly refused any

Thurs. July 16 Big Sam's Funky Nation with special guest opener
Josh Dion
$18 adv/ $20 dos Recently awarded the Big Easy Music Award
for "Best Funk Group of 2008," Big Sam's Funky Nation is a driving force
of urban funk. The band is led by trombone powerhouse, Big Sam
8pm Williams, formerly the trombonist for the Dirty Dozen Brass
Band, who the San Francisco Chronicle calls "the top man on the slide
trombone in the birthplace of jazz." Combining his distinctive
trombone riffs with a call-and-response MC style, Big Sam refuses to let the
audience sit still. Between the band's solos and his trombone riffs, Big
Sam second-lines (a uniquely New Orleans style of street-dance) and
gets the crowd going. Big Sam's Funky Nation is not a one man show; the
members of the Funky Nation, a group of well trained and experienced
musicians with impressive credentials of their own, meet the
challenges of their funky band leader. BSFN masterfully combines a rock
sensibility with improv-style associated with jazz and the horn-heavy front
section that's the hallmark of big band funk. The energy
level is high voltage when this band takes the stage, and as Jambase Online
proclaims, "as long as groups like Big Sam's Funky Nation helm communal
happenings like this one the funky fever is bound to spread."
