Botanical Jewelry Made from Sustainable Silver Debuting at Handmade Galleria
Javits Center - New York International Gift Fair, NY
Amber Mahler, a California native, and one of New York’s most exciting emerging jewelers, will be debuting her work at the Handmade Galleria section of the New York International Gift Fair in New York City. Amber Mahler is the designer and maker of Mani Designs jewelry and will be in attendance at the trade show, taking place from August 15th to the 19th, 2009.
Amber Mahler’s unique botanical sources make for work that is distinctive, elegant, and sophisticated. The names of some of her pieces reveal her influences: Fern Curl Earrings, Date Plum Posts, Wild Persimmon Crown Pendant. The seedpods, flowers, buds and twigs in Amber’s botanical series are collected from walks in the woods near her home. They are lost wax cast silver and gold originals of the actual flowers and branches she gathers on these walks. A commitment to “live casting” insures that Amber must continually forage for or grow in her garden new material to be cast.
Even within the season there is only a small window of time that particular flora is in bloom - making it necessary for Amber to continually walk these trails and spend time in her garden. This part of the process is a practice in patience and attentiveness and also serves to inspire the artist. It is this seasonal quality that makes her work so special - an heirloom piece to be treasured and passed down. Her homage to what is temporal reflects our own experience with the natural world and reminds us of what the next season will bring.
Amber uses flowers and plants as her source because of her love for the natural beauty inherent in all plant life - the perfect repeating patterns and intelligence of shapes. She attempts to reveal the inner workings of the plant, so that this inner, often hidden, beauty may be transmitted to the wearer.
The appeal of the lost wax technique is that each casting is entirely unique. By pushing the boundaries of what is considered possible with this process, Amber has captured very detailed organic matter, quite possibly not yet seen before in metal. Each season, sprung from the live castings, she offers a number of new and limited edition production items.
