DAYLIGHT: Vintage Racing at Lime Rock Park

Saturday, September 5, 2009 was Vintage Race Day at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut. Lime Rock Park was founded in 1957 and is a 1.53 mile road course. Of the classes that competed today, we loved the Corvettes the most although all were impressed with the performance of the Mini-Coopers. Not only were the cars fashionable, but Peachy saw some lovely summer hats worn by the crowd that were Top It Off-worthy. Peachy Deegan was in attendance with her Auto Expert Editor, Skipper Deegan who will comment on today’s race for Cruising Peachy:

It was a nice, clear, sunny day in Northwestern Connecticut. I have been coming here since 1968 when I raced my 1966 Corvette here when three Corvette clubs rented the track for the day. I’ve seen Mark Donahue, Paul Newman, Sam Posey, John Finch and Peter Revson race here over the years. From Nascar to SCCA, Lime Rock hosts a variety of different races, types of cars, and drivers.

I’ve seen the vintage cars race about twenty different years over the years at this track. Today’s race was no exception to the amazing caliber of racing that Lime Rock is known for. There was unmatched class and racing excitement which one always encounters at Lime Rock and with each race the excitement grew, until the last race of the class that included Corvettes. Ferraris that race at Lime Rock are collected by enthusiasts that not only race them, but also have them for their collection and have been raced in movies.

Not only are American cars and American races celebrated at Lime Rock, but it is an international affair. This is the fiftieth anniversary of the race heard round the world where Roger Ward in an Offy midget beat all of the foreign competition such as Ferrari, Jaguar, and Lamborghini in 1959.

At Lime Rock today, in addition to the races, the spectators have the opportunity to walk in the paddock area to view the fabulous vintage cars and converse with the friendly drivers and owners. Whom You Know enjoyed speaking with Karen and J. Dale Barry of Westchester, California. Karen raced a number 58 1960 Huffaker BMC F-JR and we witnessed her speed improve with every lap. Her single seat front engine Formula Junior is equipped with a rare BMC factory special competition XXP 1100 cc racing engine, one of three known. So from coast to coast, Lime Rock is both known and notable!

Also particularly notable today was the 1939 Mercedes Benz W 154 Grand Prix Racing Car! Today was the first time since 1939 that the car had been on a race track when it finished second in the Jugoslav Grand Prix. It was driven by Manfred von Brauschitsh. Compliant suspension, a powerful V12 motor developing nearly 500 horsepower and a sleek shape added up to a very successful motorcar capable of close to 200 mph in race trim (i.e. condition).

We look forward to the walk in the park on Sunday- the car show.
