The Next Super- Class of Ingredients For Functional Food and Cosmetics

The rapidly growing market for functional foods and natural cosmetics brings with it a significant potential for multi-functional “active” ingredients and coloring agents. Anthocyanins, a new class of such ingredients offer significant potential not only as natural pigments but for their anti-aging, anti-oxidant and localized adipose fat burning properties as well.

Historically, these materials have been very difficult to isolate from natural super fruit sources or to synthesize in a cost effective manner. ChromaDex is currently working on developing efficient, cost-effective production methods for these molecules and has generated a diversified range of anthocyanins that will allow a more thorough investigation of the new product development opportunities they represent.

Key take-away points:

Growing market demand for novel “phytochemicals” for the cosmetic and functional food markets.
Anthocyanins will become one of the next “super” classes of phytochemical compounds, not the red wine compound, reservratrol.
Anthocyanins are water soluble pigments that reflects light in the red to blue range of the visible spectrum. Often observed in the plant kingdom, anthocyanins serve to color anything from fruits to the autumn leaves. These pigments act as powerful antioxidants helping to protect the plant from UV damage
Health benefits of anthocyanins:
Antioxidant, Anti-aging, Weight loss, Fat burning, Diabetes, Anti-inflammatory, Anti-cancer
ChromaDex has been working on selective methods of manufacturing anthocyanins for over 8 years and has determined that a novel process of fermentation would be the most efficient way to make anthocyanins.
