Cruising Peachy: The Motor Racing Heritage Association

In 1992 a like minded group of individuals met to form a new club devoted to preserving the history of motorsports. The logo they chose depicted the 1903 Olds Pirate, the first car to race on Ormond’s beach, and Sir Malcolm Campbell’s Bluebird that achieved the ultimate speed there of 276 MPH in 1935. The group installed Tim Sullivan as president and Hilly Rife as vice president. Mr. Sullivan was a retired Valvoline executive and had served in many promotional capacities for NASCAR. Mr. Rife was the former owner of Lincoln Speedway in Pennsylvania and had spent his life around racing. The remainder of the members consisted of ex drivers, owners, mechanics and fans.

In 1998 the group published the hugely successful Motorsports locator map, a tri-fold pamphlet that ran down “The Birthplace Of Speed” and “The World’s Center Of Racing” and pinpointed all of the historic sites around Volusia County. Complete with photos, the map continues to be a prized souvenir of visitors to the area.

In 1999 the MRHA was approached with the prospect of taking over the historic beach race re-enactments on Ormond Beach. The City had been sponsoring the event each Thanksgiving as part of The Birthplace Of Speed Celebration but intended to drop the beach race portion. MRHA accepted the offer with the understanding that the Historic Time Trials would be theirs alone. The group presented a good show each year and it was well received by the public. When the Centennial year of 2003 rolled around the city and other groups once more became excited about the beach re-enactments and wanted to be a part of the fun. With sixteen groups at the table the 2003 Centennial was a roaring success. The MRHA fielded the greatest collection of Edwardian era racecars ever assembled anywhere and a good time was had by both participants and fans. The Centennial events continued with a yearly success and will culminate with the final event which will be held on March 16, 2010.

Motor Racing Heritage Association continues to lead the way in racing history preservation. under the guidance of president Ron Piasecki and VP Al Wanser.
