Montblanc Named as Official Time Sponsor for 2009 Breeders’ Cup Global Luxury Brand to Participate in World Renowned Horseracing Event
Montblanc, manufacturer of luxury handcrafted timepieces has partnered with The Breeder’s Cup to become the exclusive promotional partner in the timing category for the 26th Breeders’ Cup World Championships.
Deemed thoroughbred racing’s most prestigious global event, consisting of 14 races and $25.5 million in purses, this year’s Breeders’ Cup will be held on Friday, Nov. 6, and Saturday, Nov. 7, at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif. and will be televised live on ABC and ESPN to a worldwide audience in more than 120 countries.
Montblanc views the relationship with the Breeders’ Cup as one that is ingrained in its culture as owner of the patented rights to the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec timing movement. Almost two hundred years ago inventor Nicolas Rieussec attempted to develop a timing system that could record the exact times run by individual horses. Rieussec constructed a wooden case containing a clock movement that left a drop of ink on two rotating dials to measure the time whenever a button on the machine was pushed. At a horse racing event held in Paris in 1821, Rieussec utilized this machine and succeeded to an accuracy of a quarter of a second in recording the finishing time of each horse.
Taking the Greek word for time; chronos; and graphien; to write; Nicolas Rieussec was able to “write time,” thus inventing the very first chronograph. Inspired by Rieussec’s use of rotating dials and his ability to “write time;” the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec Chronograph was developed in tribute to his historical invention. A major milestone in the brand’s history, the Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec timepiece features the first movement ever to have been developed, produced, and assembled in the company’s very own watch making facilities in Switzerland.
“We are extremely honored to join the prestigious Breeders’ Cup as they present some of the world’s finest thoroughbreds,” said Jan-Patrick Schmitz, President & CEO of Montblanc North America. “With our connection to horseracing through the genius of Nicolas Rieussec, inventor of the chronograph, this is a great moment in Montblanc’s history that we’re proud to share.”
As part of Montblanc’s on site visibility at the 2009 Breeders’ Cup, the brand will present a Montblanc Nicolas Rieussec timepiece to the winning owner of the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic and Breeders’ Cup Classic in the Winners Circle; provide VIP gifts for all participants (International VIPs, owners, breeders, jockeys, and have product displays in premium areas at Santa Anita Park.
