READ THIS: Girl On Top by Nicole Williams ~ Career Coach Translates Dating Rules Into Office Success Manual Teaching Ladies How to Wind Up On Top Best-selling Author Reveals Twenty Top Success Tips for Women

“There comes a point in all of our personal lives when we realize just how powerful we are as women. A coy smile and tilt to the head can be all it takes to get our own way. This power exists at the office as well, and if you’ve got it... flaunt it.” – Nicole Williams, Girl on Top

There are a lot of great points in this book, and it is well worth reading for all of you Career Girls out there!  From the start to the end, Nicole Williams packs punchy advice on getting ahead and staying ahead in your profession, all the while drawing conclusions to one's love life.  Her belief that you are not a statistic unless you want to be one pervades the entire book and just goes to show you that a little positive attitude can get you a long way.  But it's not only optimism, it is also execution!

From Chapter 1 to Chapter 20, strategic knowledge is passed along, and here is what we liked best in brief; we cannot tell you all as we want you to read the book yourself:

*Chapter 1 Follow Your Heart: You must do something that you love.  Life is too short to not love your job.

*The pros and cons of being well-liked versus well-respected.  Although not mutually exclusive, they are different.  Nicole Williams has some interesting points on this in Chapter 2.

*She recommends an alter ego....now did you think our REAL name is Peachy Deegan?

*Chapter 4: All about knowing what to say when, and how much.  Interesting, however, we would say that personal judgement and the specific situation trump all you could say in a book.

*Chapter 8: The Laws of Supply and Demand.  We love economics and we love the parallels drawn here!  Be scarce, be a legend, and be the Girl on Top!

*Chapter 9: We quote her quote on Coco Chanel because it is good enough to be repeated: "A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous."  Read this Chapter to find out HOW to be these things. Of course she hits on two of our favorites, teeth http://www.whomyouknow.com/search/label/TOP%20TEETH and hair http://www.whomyouknow.com/search/label/Salon%20Peachy pointing out: "Nothing says, 'I grew up in a trailer' quite like a mouthful of yellow snaggleteeth."  All we have to say is, just call Dr. Garo and make your appointment.  The Top Ten Commandments of Style are noteworthy!

*Chapter 11: Do not give away the milk for free!

Although we would hope much of this is review for our readers, we recommend perusing Girl on Top for a brush-up on helpful tips!  Much of it is common sense but the witty banter of Nicole Williams makes it fresh and a book that you won't put down until the end.

What young woman hasn’t heard the phrase “Don’t Give Away Your Milk for Free?” Now, the all-important advice formerly reserved for mothers urging their daughters to preserve their chastity can be applied to a new frontier: the workplace.  Career coach Nicole Williams authors a book using the best wisdom from the dating world and applies it to womens’ careers in her new book, Girl on Top (Center Street, October 2009, $19.99.)

When newly divorced Williams moved to New York, she discovered those dating “rules” she was dusting off could just as easily apply to helping women get what they want in their career. Williams likens careers to a love affair and offers solid advice, despite the clever analogies, that will help women discover their best job fit and take control of their career. With chapters titled “If You’ve Got It Flaunt It,” “Don’t Waste the Pretty,” “Follow Your Heart,” and “Be Willing to Walk Away,” Williams dishes out principles that are just as true when courting success as courting love.

Ground-breaking, counter-intuitive pieces of wisdom are found throughout the book. On the topic of dispelling the lies parents tell their children that can thwart success in the workplace, such as being yourself, Williams writes, “NEVER be yourself!  Do you really want everyone at the office to know you’re an overly sensitive, insecure, not-as-smart-as-you-pretend-to-be borderline personality case?” This real-world, hard-hitting advice isn’t likely to be found in an MBA program anywhere…but it should be.

Covering subjects others are afraid to, Williams takes them head-on. On the subject of women’s sexuality in the workplace, she writes, “I think we’ve had way too many years of presuming that the key to success for women is to pretend that we’re men. The key to career success is using all the tools you have available.  You are a woman. You have special qualities, not the least of which is your ability to possess charm and stimulate attraction. This isn’t about having sex in order to get ahead, it’s about acknowledging that there is power in desire and using that to your advantage.”

Arguing that women know what they want in a romantic partner, Williams says women should have a list of qualities they look for in a job too. Knowing their likes and dislikes—armed with strategies from Williams—will have every woman loving her new position: Girl on Top.
