READ THIS: One Thousand New York Buildings - Photography by Jorg Brockmann, Text by Bill Harris, Foreword by Judith Dupre
The architecture of New York is like nowhere else, and we haven't seen a better work depict it! The team of Jorg Brockmann and Bill Harris has assembled an excellent array of the best of New York buildings, concentrating on our favorite borough, Manhattan which encompasses the first 394 pages, followed by one on The Bronx, one on Queens, two on Brooklyn and one on Staten Island. We love how in the foreword Kurt Vonnegut is quoted: "[He] coined the phrase 'Skyscraper National Park' to describe Manhattan." This book was began as a project before 9/11/01 but was completed after, beginning with the Statue of Liberty and ending with a Cathedral.
In the foreword, Judith Dupre also smartly states:
"I cannot decide if New York is a city of sidewalks or of sky."
"If you want to know New York, walk."
The history in this book is amazing and a great accompaniment to the pictures. We learned that we want a vanity address! (Never knew what this was...) Did you know electric advertising signs here started in 1891? We could go on and on, but this is a book of pictures, fit for any office or home coffee table. Though it is completely black and white, the colors of your memories will bring it to life!
