The New York Liberty has selected WNBA All-Star Nicole Powell with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 WNBA Dispersal Draft, it was announced today by team President and General Manager Carol Blazejowski.

“I am extremely pleased we were able to acquire Nicole Powell, who has proven herself to be an outstanding scorer and competitor. Nicole’s arrival in New York will certainly help solidify our backcourt next season,” said Blazejowski.

A 6-2 forward, Powell completed her sixth season as a professional in 2009 while averaging a career-high in points, rebounds and assists with 16.7, 5.9 and 2.3 per game, respectively. In 34 games, she led Sacramento in scoring 20 times, posted double figures 29 times and collected 10 or more rebounds in four contests. The Monarch’s leading scorer finished the summer ranked as the WNBA’s No. 1 free throw shooter (.979), one of the league’s top 10 leading scorers and one of the top 20 three-point shooters. Powell made her first WNBA All-Star appearance this past summer, posting 21 points in 21 minutes off the bench for the winning Western Conference team.

"Nicole Powell is a wonderful addition to our roster, coming off her finest season in the WNBA," said Head Coach Anne Donovan. "Her experience, shooting range and size will be a huge addition to our perimeter game."

The Sierra Vista, AZ native is currently overseas competing for Fenerbahce of the Turkish League. Through six Euroleague games, Powell has averaged 15 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game. In Turkish league play, she is shooting .540-percent from long range while averaging 11.3 points and 4.3 rebounds per outing.

Powell won the 2005 WNBA Championship title in her first season in Sacramento while averaging 10.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. She was originally drafted by the Charlotte Sting as the third overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft. On March 3, 2005, she was traded to Sacramento as part of a three-player deal.
