On Bruxism, from Dr. Garo Nazarian:
Bruxism is a habit of grinding or clenching one's teeth. Clenching requires no movement at all when the teeth are closed together and grinding occurs during the action of moving one's teeth from side to side. There are an array of symptoms that one can use to identify if she or he suffers from bruxism. Some of them include headaches in the temporal region, earaches, worn or fractured teeth, sore jaw and/or frequent toothaches. Bruxism can develop when one is in childhood all the way through adulthood and is caused by a variety of factors. Some of these include, stress, abnormal bite, and/or missing teeth. Your dentist may recommend a variety of treatment options depending on what factors cause the bruxism to occur: this includes warm compresses to the face and/or certain relaxation techniques. Your dentist may also suggest you have a nightguard custom fabricated for you to wear while you sleep. This custom made nightguard can slip over either the upper or lower teeth and will prevent contact between them. This helps relieve some of the pressure resulting from the grinding or clenching and prevent further jaw damage or tooth erosion.
