Whom You Know Recommends Taking at Trip Aboard the Titanic Via Times Square!

In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, Manhattan is even crazier than normal.  One of the most congested parts is Times Square, and until this weekend Peachy did not know for herself that you could escape the chaos and enter a world deep under the sea only a block away.

Upon entering Discovery Times Square Exhibitions with her shipmate, Peachy was given a boarding pass for the White Star Line, as all guests visiting the Titanic receive upon ship "entry."  You "live" as that actual person walking through the exhibit which amazingly has authentic items from the real Titanic, discovered we believe 73 years after its sinking, after hitting that deadly iceberg.  Right down to the iceberg, which is part of the exhibit, this experience screams authenticity.  Be aware this is not all smiles and fun; of course the fate of the ship is explored and there are sobering moments, but this only adds to the reality that RMS Titanic Inc. has captured.

As Miss Eva Miriam Hart from Ilford, Essex, England, Peachy Deegan became a seven year old accompanied by her parents sailing from Southampton travelling to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada for the construction boom.  Eva and her shipmate found the exhibit to be first-class although they traveled second, and there was a contrast between rooms concentrating on the replication of the actual ship and areas of cases of artifacts.  We recommend you get the earphone that you can listen to throughout the "trip," no matter what your age, as there are options for children and adults: both were fun and interesting.

You know how this story ends, and of course the voyage ends with a giftshop.  There are photographers taking your picture in a couple of places so you may have a memory of your voyage.  Whom You Know Recommends Taking at Trip Aboard the Titanic!

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, currently on display at the Discovery Times Square Exhibition Space, is an interesting hybrid of museum and theme park.  In addition to displaying many amazing artifacts recovered from the shipwreck, it also allows the visitor to take an interactive journey as if he or she were a passenger on the ship.  Upon entering the exhibit I was given a Titanic boarding pass with the name and story of a real passenger.  The many personal stories of those who boarded the ship, told throughout the exhibit, made me more aware of the tragedy and loss of human lives aboard the Titanic.  The fun parts of the exhibit are the replicas: visitors get to walk aboard the ship, travel down the first class suite hallway, and stand upon the grand staircase.  I especially enjoyed sitting in a replica of the Verandah Café.  There are models of both a 3rd class cabin and a first class suite.  A ticket for the most upscale first class rooms was $4500 in 1912 which is equivalent to $90,000 today!  I wish the areas replicating the ship had been more extensive because that part really made you related to being aboard such a luxury ship.  Of course the true story lies in seeing the real artifacts from the ship.  It is amazing that jewelry, china, champagne with bubbly still in the bottles, and perfume vials that still contain perfume with intact aromas have been able to be recovered and preserved.

When the Titanic struck an iceberg it was only a few days journey away from New York.  The exhibit takes you through the tragedy, with an iceberg you can touch to imagine how cold it was for the passengers who died of hypothermia.  It is also unfortunate to learn that many of the lifeboats could have held more passengers and saved more lives.  At the end of the exhibit there is a list of names of those who survived and those who did not.   The section on recovery of objects is also fascinating. I did not know that within up to 90 years time scientists expect that the remnants of the ship will be destroyed, and therefore time is of the essence in capturing this bit of history.  Included with the $26.50 admission ticket is an audio tour- I found that the audio information was enough to enhance the learning and atmosphere, but not too long to have trouble paying attention.  A separate track is available for kids.  This Titanic exhibit is not only limited to New York and can be found at locations around the country, including Las Vegas and Puerto Rico.  However the Times Square exhibit has the largest collection of artifacts, some of which have never been displayed before so it is worth it to come and see the exhibit while it is here in New York!

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition Docks in NYC
Blockbuster Exhibition on Display in Times Square

97 Years after Ship Departs for the Big Apple

RMS Titanic, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Premier Exhibitions, Inc. (NASDAQ: PRXI), in association with Running Subway Productions, LLC, announced the debut showing of Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at the Discovery Times  Square Exposition (www.Discovery TSX.com) in New York City. The 12,000 square-foot blockbuster Exhibition features more than 350 authentic artifacts recovered from the RMS Titanic wreck site.

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition delivers a journey back in time to relive the powerful story of Titanic’s fateful voyage. Visitors are taken on a chronological journey through the life of Titanic by first assuming the identity of a real Titanic passenger, then moving through a series of dramatic galleries; they are connected with the Ship’s passengers and crew through personal stories and artifacts, many on display for the first time since recovery from the ocean floor, 12,500 feet below the sea’s surface.

“Ninety-seven years after embarking to New York City, we are proud to announce that the world’s most famous passenger liner, RMS Titanic, will complete its maiden voyage,” states Chris Davino, CEO of Premier Exhibitions, Inc. “For more than 15 years Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition has waited to bring the famous Ship to life in New York and this exciting partnership with DTSX in a prime Times Square location is an ideal opportunity for the Exhibition.  On that calm night in April 1912, more than 1,500 passengers met the same fate no matter their class or place in society; a shocking ending to what was a joyous journey.  Their story is our story and it is our honor and duty to share these treasures with New York at such a poignant time.”

“Over the past decade, wondrous exhibits traveling the world haven’t come to New York simply because no venue existed to host them,” said James Sanna, President and Executive Producer of Running Subway Productions, an experienced New York-based event producer and promoter.  “Discovery Times Square Exposition creates a world-class home in New York for great exhibits that bring fascinating and moving art and artifacts to light in dramatic immersive environments.  We look forward to enriching New York’s dynamic and unsurpassed cultural landscape.”

Highlights of the Exhibition, which has been seen by more than 22 million people worldwide, include a scaled recreation of the Grand Staircase, replicas of first and third class cabins, clothing and personal effects of passengers and undisturbed bottles filled with champagne from the Ship. Additionally, the Exhibition displays a number of artifacts that explain and explore the Ship’s construction, life on board, and the ill-fated night of the sinking, as well as recent artifact rescue efforts.

The artifacts in the Exhibition are preserved through a painstaking process, which begins with a two-and-a-half hour dive to the Titanic wreck site. Once an artifact is recovered, it must undergo conservation following carefully designed processes to remove rust and salt deposits. After a period of six months to two years, artifacts can be conserved using treatments that are compatible with each artifact’s construction materials.

Tickets to Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition are available at www.DiscoveryTSX.com, at the Discovery TSX box office located at 226 West 44th Street and by phone at 866-9-TSXNYC. The exhibition is open seven days a week, from 10AM – 10PM.
