Napa Valley, a long time favorite California vacation destination, offers some excellent values, including 35% off hotel rates and 50% off wine tastings February 1-28, 2010 for those seeking a delicious, healthy and heartfelt experience before, during and after Valentines Day. This small valley, just an hour drive from San Francisco, is a great place to experience some of the world’s finest wines and food while taking in the magnificent scenery by foot or bicycle. A quick, custom getaway to Napa can be created for those seeking a combination of wine tasting, gourmet meals and/or hiking/biking tours off the beaten path. The following option has been developed in conjunction with the effort to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy heart.
A tour based around American Heart Month offers an excellent opportunity for an active outing in one of America’s most beautiful destinations. It also may help counter the weight gains of the recent holiday season.
It all starts at Ehlers Estate. We just profiled their history. One of Napa Valley’s jewel wine estates with 40 contiguous acres located in northern St. Helena, the original stone winery dates back to 1886. Visitors to Ehlers will enjoy both an extensive wine pairing with gourmet bites and an education in organic and biodynamic farming; a rare practice in the Napa Valley. And they’ll feel good, because Ehlers Estate is held in trust by the Leducq Foundation, so all of the winery’s profits go to support the not-for-profit Leducq Foundation for cardiovascular research. It can be said that Ehlers is California’s ultimate heart-healthy winery experience. In honor of Heart Month, Ehlers is offering a special two-for-one tasting opportunity for $35.00 (normally $70.00) for February only, and must be booked by appointment.
Another winery with a direct connection to the heart is Palmaz Vineyards in Napa, also providing a two-for-one tasting experience during February. This winery was founded by the Palmaz family. It was Julio Palmaz who invented the Coronary Stent, which was patented in 1988. His passion for wine and support of the scientific research that demonstrates heart healthy benefits from moderate consumption of red wine make this a must stop in Napa. Dr. Palmaz is still active in the fight against cardiovascular disease. Palmaz conducts tours privately and by appointment only. A member of the family greets guests and guides them on a walking tour of the vineyards and the winery before tasting wines paired with hors d' oeuvres. The wines include both current and past vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon. The cost is regularly $60 per person (limited to 12) and is offered in February at $30 per person.
Named by Bon Appetit in 2008 as one of America’s 10 top seafood houses, Go Fish wood- fired grill and sushi bar celebrates Heart Month with a special month-long prix-fixe three-course menu including edamame finished with Moldon Salt, Miso Marinated Black Cod
Scallions, Bok choy, Shiitakes and Shiitake mushroom broth and finishing dessert with Grapefruit granita, candied grapefruit peel and grapefruit segments. Gayot.com has named Go Fish one of the top 10 heart healthy restaurants in Napa/Sonoma for 2010. Few restaurants in America have sustained a 25 year history of excellence, but it is the authenticity and standards for freshness that Chef/Owner Cindy Pawlcyn has poured into Mustards Grill, Cindy’s Backstreet Kitchen and Go Fish that makes Napa Valley dining a truly meaningful experience.
The towns of St. Helena, Napa, and Yountville are best explored on foot or soaring overhead in a hot air balloon. But perhaps the best recreational option available to visitors seeking a heart healthy Napa activity has to be cycling alongside the picturesque vineyards. Napa Valley Bike Tours, based in Yountville, offers both guided tours and bike rentals for those seeking an authentic and inspiring activity. Cycling acts as a particularly social activity that can be shared by couples or the entire family and a significant couples discount is being offered in February for American Heart Month. These tours can include Ehlers or Palmaz wineries or can be taken off the beaten path to visit one of Napa’s fine lakes.
Visitors seeking to be immersed in the heart healthy experience can stay overnight at Napa Valley’s premier property, the Silverado Resort at special rates that will make both the heart and the pocketbook happier in February. Approaching the circular drive and checking in at the historic Silverado Mansion, visitors will be enchanted by a building that has been on property for over 100 years. Set among the rolling hills of Napa Valley's wine country, Silverado Resort offers everything you would expect, along with all the amenities, from a first class resort. You'll find plenty to do at this world class destination Resort featuring two championship golf courses, a full service Health Spa, 10 swimming pools, 16 tennis courts and Bocce Ball as well as hiking and biking trails. About Ehlers Estate
In 1985, French entrepreneur and philanthropist Jean Leducq began acquiring small parcels of vineyard land in Napa Valley’s acclaimed St. Helena appellation and by 2001, had joined the original 14-acre Ehlers Estate property with contiguous vineyard parcels to create a 43.8-acre estate. At the heart of this estate is the historic stone winery built by Bernard Ehlers in 1886. As a tribute to the site’s long winemaking history, Jean Leducq and his wife Sylviane revived the original Ehlers Estate name beginning with the winery’s inaugural 2000 vintage Cabernet Sauvignon. The following year, Ehlers Estate produced its first Merlot, and with the 2002 vintage, added its flagship, estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon 1886 to its portfolio of handcrafted Bordeaux-varietal wines
Ehlers Estate represents the unique fusion of an outstanding winegrowing estate, environmental consciousness and international philanthropy. The historic and diverse Napa Valley vineyard of Ehlers Estate is cultivated using organic and biodynamic farming techniques to produce a small portfolio of exceptional estate-grown wines. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the sale of these wines go to support the Leducq Foundation, a highly regarded, not-for-profit foundation dedicated to funding international cardiovascular research. The heart-healthy Napa program features two-for-one pricing on Ehlers touring and tasting through February 28. For reservations, call 707-963-5972
